UPDATE: Alas, we’ve just gotten word that Deborah Harkness’s flight has been cancelled, and she is stranded in Chicago at O’Hare. Given her tight touring schedule, we’ve had no choice but to cancel her appearance tonight at the Cocteau.

We will reschedule as soon as her schedule, and her own, permit.

Our apologies for the inconvenience.

===============================================================================
The Jean Cocteau will be having another terrific author event tomorrow (hmmm, actually it would be today now, looking at the clock — anyway, Monday evening), when we welcome bestselling fantasist DEBORAH HARKNESS to Santa Fe.

Deborah will be reading from her latest novel, THE BOOK OF LIFE.

Afterward, Lorene Mills of REPORT FROM SANTA FE will be interviewing the author about her work, and Deborah will be signing copies of THE BOOK OF LIFE and her other novels.

The event starts at 7:00pm. See you there.

(For those unable to attend, autographed copies should be available by mailorder from the Jean Cocteau bookstore).

We had another cool author event at the Jean Cocteau Cinema last night.

Bestselling novelist STUART WOODS came in to join us, to talk about his new thriller HOT PURSUIT.

Trent Zelazny conducted the interview, and we had a lively Q & A with our guest afterwards.

And of course we made Stuart sign a big stock of books before we let him leave, so autographed hardcover copies of HOT PURSUIT are available through the Jean Cocteau website… along with signed books by Junot Diaz, Lisa See, Joe Lansdale, James S.A. Corey, Dennis Lehane, Sam Sykes, Diana Gabaldon, aand yours truly.

We had a pleasant surprise last night at the Jean Cocteau when Elizabeth Bear and Scott Lynch dropped by for a short visit.

Of course, we immediately took advantage of their presence by making them sign books.

So… for as long as the supply lasts, which will not be long… we have hardcovers of ROGUES signed by Scott, and hardcovers of OLD VENUS signed by Elizabeth.

Of course, I've autographed both of these as well… and the copies of ROGUES on hand also have signatures from another contributor, Walter Jon Williams.

Also, from the day before, we have copies of THE DOLL COLLECTION, autographed by editor Ellen Datlow and contributors Jeffrey Ford and Stephan Graham Jones.

This will be a great weekend at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

PETER S. BEAGLE and his travelling show return tonight, with THE LAST UNICORN.

<lj-embed id=”552″/>

We have one screening tonight (Friday) at 6:00, and two tomorrow at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Peter will be introducing each screening personally, and fielding your questions afterwards. He’ll also be on hand to sign copies of his original novel, and many of other classic works. If you missed him last year when he passed through, don’t make the same mistake again. And if you were here last year, well, come again.

In between the two Saturday screenings of THE LAST UNICORN, we’ll be showing THE SALVATION a new western in the classic tradition, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green.

<lj-embed id=”553″/>

Come Sunday, ELLEN DATLOW will be here with new anthology, THE DOLL COLLECTION.

<lj-embed id=”554″/>

Ellen will be joined by two of her authors, Jeffrey Ford and Stephen Graham Jones. We’ll have readings from the book, an interview, a question-and-answer, and of course Ellen, Jeff, and Stephen will all be available to sign their books.

All that… and our CREEPY DOLL CONTEST! Check back here on Monday to see the winners.

Never understood why so many people are scared of clowns.

Clowns aren’t creepy.

DOLLS are creepy.

Look at these examples I found on the internet:

Odds and Ends

Saw PREDESTINATION at the Cocteau on opening night, and thought it was terrific… and very faithful to the Heinlein story.  Ethan Hawke was very good, and Sarah Snook was great.  This one will be on my Hugo nominations ballot, for sure.  See it at the Cocteau if you're in Santa Fe, or at your own favorite movie palace if you're not, but see it… especially if you like time travel, SF, and RAH.

We had a great event with Carrie Vaughn on a very cold Monday night, and she signed a ton of stock for us before heading back Colorado way.  If you're looking for an autographed copy of LOW MIDNIGHT, or indeed, any of the Kitty books, we've got them.  They should be up on the Cocteau website "Signed Books" page very soon, and available for purchase.  For the Wild Cards fans out there, Carrie also signed copies of the INSIDE STRAIGHT and BUSTED FLUSH hardcovers with her stories.

We also expect to be adding some signed Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon, and the Spanish language (Mexican) editions of my own Ice & FIre books, so watch the page, you'll see them soon.  Meanwhile, we have autographed books by NEIL GAIMAN, DENNIS LEHANE, JUNOT DIAZ, and LEV GROSSMAN, all currently available at the theatre, or by mailorder.

Carrie Is Coming

We have another cool author event Monday night at the Jean Cocteau.

CARRIE VAUGHN will be driving down to Denver to join us for the evening.  We'll be having an hour of conversation and taking some questions from the audience, after which we'll adjourn to the lobby so Carrie can sign books.

carrielow mid

Carrie is best known as the author of the bestselling urban fantasy series KITTY AND THE MIDNIGHT HOUR and its many sequels, about the adventures of a werewolf talk show host.  LOW MIDNIGHT, her newest book, is a spinoff of sorts from the Kitty series, featuring one of the most popular of Kitty's supporting cast.

She has also been one of the mainstays of the revived Wild Cards series, creator of Earth Witch and Curveball and the whole American Hero concept that launched the "next generation" WC books in INSIDE STRAIGHT.  If you haven't sampled any of her Wild Cards work, check out her Earth Witch story on Tor.com: http://www.tor.com/stories/2014/10/nuestra-senora-de-la-esperanza-carrie-vaughn

She also has her own "superpowers" universe, as seem in AFTER THE GOLDEN AGE and DREAMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE, and has written some terrific stand-alone historicals for my anthologies DANGEROUS WOMEN and ROGUES.

An amazing writer, an amazing person.  Come meet her Monday night at 7pm, at the Jean Cocteau.
