Coming to the Cocteau

We have some great stuff coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema in the weeks to come.

Starting this weekend, when we’ll be showing the classic BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Come Tuesday, we’ll have another author event, this time featuring… yes, ME.

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS came out October 6 and has been riding high on the lists. And Tuesday October 27 is the official release date for both Bantam’s official ICE AND FIRE adult coloring book, and Tor’s reissue of Wild Cards volume five, DOWN & DIRTY.

All three titles will be available for sale at the JCC. MELINDA SNODGRASS will be on hand as well, to interview me. A question-and-answer will follow, and then I will adjourn to the lobby to sign books (but no personalizations, sorry). However, tickets are already half-gone for this one, and we anticipate another sellout… so if you want to join us, contact the theatre (by phone or via our website) and reserve a book and a place now.

Come Halloween weekened, we’ll be showing something old and something new… ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (with a live performance by Rocky Horror New Mexico) and THE CREEPING GARDEN, a film about… wait for it… SLIME MOLD. (Where else but the JCC?)

The Martian…

… will be at the Jean Cocteau on Monday, in the person of Andy Weir. We’ll be talking about his novel, and the movie, and he’ll be signing books.

ADDENDUM: Sorry, slowpokes. Jon has just informed me that the Andy Weir event is SOLD OUT. ((Don’t say I didn’t warn you)).

Our next author event will be… hey, ME… on October 27. Followed by Deborah Harkness on November 8. Watch the Cocteau website for details. I expect those events to sell out as well, so be prepared to pounce as soon as tickets are available.

The Martian Is Coming

No, not the movie (curse you, Fox). The writer.

We had a great evening last night with William Gibson, but at the Jean Cocteau we like to keep the big nights coming… so we’re bringing in ANDY WEIR on October 19 for a reading, a talk, and a booksigning.

We’re not being allowed to show the film (but you can catch it down the street with our friends at the Violet Crown), but we’ll have plenty of copies of the novel on hand, and Andy will be here to scrawl in them and answer all your questions about book, movie, and planet.

And hey, I will be there as well, so all you Martians can also pick up a signed copy of OLD MARS, if you like, and maybe an OLD VENUS for good measure.

Andy Weir is one of the few SF writers I’ve yet to meet, so I am really looking forward to hosting him at the Jean Cocteau. The fun starts at 7pm. Reserve your book and your ticket at our website, and come join us.

Cyberpunk Comes to Santa Fe

Hugo- and Nebula-winning author William Gibson, the father of cyberpunk and author of NEUROMANCER, will be coming to Santa Fe tomorrow night (October 6) for a reading, Q&A, and booksigning at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

Bill will be signing copies of his latest novel, THE PERIPHERAL. Admission is free with the purchase of a hardcover book, $5 with the purchase of a paperback, and $10 sans book purchase.

Coming to the Cocteau

For all you New Mexican out there… and for travellers passing through the Land of Enchantment… we have lots of cool stuff coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema these next couple of months, starting this Friday when we open EVEREST.

We also have some cool special events and booksignings coming up.

On October 6, WILLIAM GIBSON, the father of cyberpunk, will be here for an interview and Q&A, and to sign copies of new novel THE PERIPHERAL. Reserve your copies early; we expect a sellout, as with many of our author events.

From October 9 through October 14, we’ll be hosting a WES CRAVEN RETROSPECTIVE, to honor the late great director whose death on August 30 saddened millions of his fans. I had the honor of working with Wes once — he directed one of my TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, though sadly the episode was gutted by CBS before broadcast. A great guy, and an immense talent. We’ll be showing several of his best known films, and hope to bring in some special guests via Skype.

On November 8, another author event. This time we are bringing in bestselling author DEBORAH HARKNESS. Harkness was originally scheduled a few months ago, but flight delays forced a cancellation… but this time we hope the airlines will be more helpful, and get her to Santa Fe on time.

We had sold-out houses for our burlesque performances earlier this month, so we’re going to do it again… this time with the SUICIDE GIRLS!

Alas, our small (very small) stage at the JCC isn’t big enough to accomodate all the Suicide Girls, so we’ll be offering a somewhat downscaled version of their usual show… but that should still be pretty kickass, and there is something to be said for an intimate setting. And as everyone who has seen them knows, the Suicide Girls never disappoint.

That one should be a sellout too. A portion of every ticket will be donated to our friends at the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary down in Candy Kitchen.

Come to Scotland…

… with Jean Cocteau.

(Yes, yes, Cocteau was French. But there was lots of back and forth between the Scots and the French, y’know. They called it the Aulde Alliance).

We’re having a very special event this week at the Cocteau: a week-long marathon of the entire first season of OUTLANDER, the brilliant television adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels. We’re showing all sixteen hours, and best of all: admission is FREE.

The marathon is already half over, alas… but you can still catch the second half of the season, tonight, Saturday, and Sunday.

We’ve had all kinds of fun special events too.

We had Diana Gabaldon herself the first two nights, talking, answering questions, signing books.

We had bagpipers.

We had men in kilts.

We had a tasting of single-malt Scotch.

(No haggis, though. Have to draw the line somewhere).

One More Day

Last day at home. Tomorrow Parris and I fly east for the wedding, and some time in NYC with my agents and editors, and the baseball game on Staten Island (Go Direwolves!).

Speaking of the last, I am told tickets are almost sold out, so if you want to come, snag some now. The first 2500 fans at the stadium will get Direwolf hats. The first 400 in line will be able to get an autograph. Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary will be there as well, with one of their “envoy” wolves, and there will be a fund-raising raffle for the player jerseys.

While I love travel, I hate getting ready to travel. The last day at home is always stressful. Too much to do.

I won’t be blogging much, or reading email, while on the road, so I expect this space will go silent for a week or so. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean the Puppies got me.

Oh, before I forget… for those of you still in New Mexico, be sure and swing by the Jean Cocteau Cinema on Monday, August 3 for one of our famous (infamous) author events. Wild Cards stalwart VICTOR MILAN (creator of Cap’n Trips) will be on hand to read and sign copies of DINOSAUR LORDS, the first volume of his new epic fantasy series.

Come join Vic and the gang, grab your copy of DINOSAUR LORDS… another great TOR book… and make him sign some Wild Cards books as well. We’ll have those available at the JCC as well, already signed by me (and in some cases by other writers).

CHANGE Is Coming…

… but not to the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

We have our latest author event scheduled for Monday: a launch party and booksigning for the original anthology, THE CHANGE, edited by S.M. Stirling and set in his “Emberverse” universe.

Steve himself will be on hand, of course… what’s more, he’s arranged to bring in nine of the writers who contributed stories to THE CHANGE, including DIANA PAXSON, WALTER JON WILLIAMS, JANE LINDSKOLD, JOHN JOS. MILLER, and EMILY MAH.

MATT (M.T) REITAN, KEIR SALMON, VICTOR MILAN, and LAUREN TEFFEAU will also be attending.

The event starts at 7:00 pm. We will have some readings from the stories, a panel discussion moderated by Steve Stirling himself, a q&A with the audience, and of course a mass signing session where you can get your copy defaced by all the writers.

HOWEVER… because we cannot possibly get ten writers up on the little itty-bitty stage at the Jean Cocteau, we have moved this event down the road a little, to the brand new VIOLET CROWN CINEMA two blocks south. They have lots more room than we do. (And a whole lot of cool beers on tap as well).

At the Cocteau

This will be a great weekend at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

PETER S. BEAGLE and his travelling show return tonight, with THE LAST UNICORN.

We have one screening tonight (Friday) at 6:00, and two tomorrow at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Peter will be introducing each screening personally, and fielding your questions afterwards. He’ll also be on hand to sign copies of his original novel, and many of other classic works. If you missed him last year when he passed through, don’t make the same mistake again. And if you were here last year, well, come again.

In between the two Saturday screenings of THE LAST UNICORN, we’ll be showing THE SALVATION a new western in the classic tradition, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green.

Come Sunday, ELLEN DATLOW will be here with new anthology, THE DOLL COLLECTION.

Ellen will be joined by two of her authors, Jeffrey Ford and Stephen Graham Jones. We’ll have readings from the book, an interview, a question-and-answer, and of course Ellen, Jeff, and Stephen will all be available to sign their books.

Peter Beagle Is Coming Back

The unicorns are coming! The unicorns are coming! (Back)

Yes, Peter S. Beagle is returning to the Jean Cocteau Cineman this weekend, and he’s bringing THE LAST UNICORN with him once again.

Peter visited us last year, and we had one of our most successful days ever at the Cocteau, with three sold-out screenings and a great signing. So we figured, hell, let’s do it again.

We’ll be screening THE LAST UNICORN at 6pm on Friday, March 13, and at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday, March 14. Advance tickets can be purchased through our website at http://www.jeancocteaucinema.com/
