Golden Boy Comes to Brazil

My Brazilian publisher LeYa is moving like lightning in their plans to bring the entire Wild Cards saga to my fans in Brazil (and Roger Zelazny’s fans and Howard Waldrop’s fans and Carrie Vaughn’s fans and Daniel Abraham’s fans and Walter Jon Williams’s fans and the fans of the other thirty-odd writers who have been and continue to be a part of Wild Cards).

LeYa has hired the amazing Marc Simonetti to paint the covers for their editions. Marc’s work is well known to my Ice & Fire readers, of course, since he did this year’s official Ice & Fire calendar.

Here’s the cover of the first volume of the Brazilian WILD CARDS, featuring Jack Braun, aka Golden Boy, the strongest man in the Wild Cards universe.

I’ve seen Marc’s roughs for the covers of ACES HIGH and JOKERS WILD, and those are pretty cool as well.

Here’s a fun addendum. Marc has uploaded of video of the process of bringing Golden Boy to life:

LOWBALL Done & Delivered

Another monkey off my back…

This time it is a hideous mutant joker monkey. LOWBALL, the twenty-second volume in the ongoing Wild Cards series of shared world anthologies and mosaic novels, is finally complete, and has been delivered to our editors at Tor.

The lineup this time:
!œThe Big Bleed,! by Michael Cassutt, starring STUNTMAN,
!œThose About to Die,! by David Anthony Durham, starring INFAMOUS BLACK TONGUE,
!œGalahad in Blue! by Melinda Snodgrass, starring FRANCIS XAVIER BLACK of the NYPD,
!œTies That Bind! by Mary Anne Mohanraj, starring MICHAEL STEVENS of the NYPD,
!œCry Wolf! by David D. Levine, introducing THE CARTOONIST,
!œRoad Kill! by Walter Jon Williams, starring GORDON THE GHOUL,
!œOnce More, for Old Time’s Sake! by Carrie Vaughn, starring EARTH WITCH, CURVBALL, DRUMMER BOY, and JOHN FORTUNE,
!œNo Parking!¦ !œ by Ian Tregillis, starring RUSTBELT.

Special thanks this time around to Melinda Snodgrass, who stepped in heroically to help with the editing on this one when I was being crushed beneath the weight of other deadlines. I could not have pulled this puppy together without her.

LOWBALL will likely be released by Tor in hardcover in summer, 2014. More details when I have ’em. Our main man, Michael Komarck, is already hard at work on another spectacular cover.

Wild Cards To Brazil

My fantasy novels have been doing very well in Brazil, thanks in no small part to my wonderful publisher LeYa and some gorgeous Marc Simonetti covers… and now my Brazilian readers will have the chance to sample my other long-running series as well. WILD CARDS is coming to Brazil.

I am thrilled to announce that I’ve just signed a deal with LeYa for Brazilian (Portugese) editions of the entire Wild Cards series, all twenty-two volumes, from the original WILD CARDS to the still-in-progress LOWBALL.

Crop

I couldn’t be happier, and my Wild Cards compatriots and contributors are doing cartwheels. I hope my Brazilian fans will enjoy reading about Jetboy, the Turtle, Dr. Tachyon, Bugsy, Yeoman, Curveball, Golden Boy, Capn Trips, Rustbelt, IBT, the Sleeper, Oddity, and the rest of the Wild Cards gang as much as we’ve enjoyed writing about ’em.

HEARTScolor2

(And yes, I know, one of these days I must go down and visit Brazil. I’d love to, really. Just a matter of finding the time. Maybe some year for Carnival, I hear that’s pretty wild).

The World Is Mine

My slow conquest of the world continues, nation by nation and language by language.

Just signed contracts for an Icelandic edition of Ice & Fire, the first time I’ll be published in that language, and now my agent informs me that he’s closed a deal for a Persian (Farsi) edition as well… a first for him as well as me.

WILD CARDS is marching on as well, with new deals for the first seven books in Mexico and Russia.

You can download and read it for free here: http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/01/when-we-were-heroes

Then you can run right out and buy every Wild Cards book you can get your hands on.

Don’t worry, we’re making more. (Books and stories both).

And she’s bringing Bugsy with her. (Well, maybe not intentionally, but it’s hard to keep Bugsy out).

For all you Wild Cards fans out there who are tired of waiting for the next book… we have a little treat coming to tide you over, a brand new original never-before-published Wild Cards story, not part of any previous anthology or mosaic novel.

It’s called “When We Were Heroes,” it’s by Daniel Abraham, it features Curveball and Bugsy.

155417_10151297332048205_205288896_n

Look for it (not yet, but soon, soon) on Tor.com — as an ebook, natch. For the moment, that’s the only way it will be available. Eventually we hope to collect this story and a few other Wild Cards originals in an actual paper book, but that will probably be a few years down the line, when we have enough material.

That’s the “cover” up above, by the amazing Hugo-winning John Picacio, and my, ain’t it swell?

Elsewhere in the Wild Cards universe, the JOKERS WILD reprint is in Tor’s pipeline, we’re adding two new stories to the ACES ABROAD reprint that will follow (as we did for volume one), LOWBALL is edging closer to delivery, and we’ll be moving right on to HIGH STAKES after that. We have more Wild Cards originals coming up on Tor.com too, so keep an eye on that site.

UPDATE: Just got some new information from my friends at Tor.

“When We Were Heroes” will debut on the Tor.com website on JANUARY 16, at 9 AM (Eastern). The ebook version will be available for purchase “about a week later.”

Also, the JOKERS WILD reissure has been scheduled for February 2014, as a trade paperback.

ACES FOR FREE SPEECH

It’s Banned Books Week, and there’s nothing I hate more than banning books (no, not even the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys), so I’m doing my little bit with a fundraiser for the COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND.

The CBLDF is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the rights of free speech and free expression in comics books, graphic novels, and related fields. My own roots as a “funny book” fan go all the way back to the letters of comment I published in FANTASTIC FOUR, AVENGERS, and other Marvel comics back in the early 60s. I also attended the very first comicon, and won my first writing prize for an amateur prose superhero yarn (an Alley Award, which I never received, sob), so comics are a medium dear to my heart… as anyone who has ever read my own long-running WILD CARDS series of mosaic novels surely knows.

Accordingly, I’ve donated one hundred (100) signed hardcover copies of the Wild Cards mosaic novel INSIDE STRAIGHT to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, to be offered to the first hundred donors making contributors of $100 or more.

WC18

The copies have all been signed by yours truly… as well as by my assistant editor, Melinda M. Snodgrass, and writers Daniel Abraham, Carrie Vaughn, Michael Cassutt, John Jos. Miller, and Caroline Spector. Which is to say, by ALL the contributors save for the elusive S.L. Farrell. This “Seven Signature Special” will continue only so long as the supplies last.

All contributions to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund are tax deductible.

For more than 25 years, the CBLDF has been protecting the comics medium in courtrooms, libraries, and classrooms all over the United States by providing legal counsel and education on issues relating to comics censorship. A proud sponsor of Banned Book Week, the CBLDF is supporting several events around the country supporting the Freedom to Read, and offers a rich range of resources about banned comics and how to defend against challenges on www.cbldf.org.

Most recently, the CBLDF has called for a school district in Connecticut to rescind a graphic novel ban carried out against the district’s own policies. In the past year the Fund prevailed in a case defending an American comic book reader who faced wrongful criminal charges in Canada because of Japanese comic book images on his laptop computer. An amicus brief they authored was also cited by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down an unconstitutional California law seeking to regulate violent content in the case Brown v. EMA.

“The CBLDF is a small organization with a powerful mission, and that work is only possible because of the generous contribution of our supporters,” CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein says. “We’re extremely grateful to Mr. Martin for this generous contribution, and to everyone who will have the opportunity to own one of these unique signed novels. The CBLDF is a tremendous team effort between the creative and readership communities who value the importance of intellectual freedom for comics and all media. We’re thankful to be celebrating Banned Books Week with George in this extraordinary way.”

To make your contribution, and order your copy of INSIDE STRAIGHT, go to:

http://cbldf.myshopify.com/products/inside-straight

All monies should go direct to the CBLDF, not to me.

Sorry, I cannot add a personal inscription to your book. The copies have already been signed by all concerned (save for Mr. Farrell), and are on their way to the CBLDF.

Free speech is one of the cornerstones of our democracy, yet somehow it is always under attack. The world is full of people who think they know better, and want to tell you what you should read, what you should write, what you should see. Christian fundamentalists, Muslim extremists, the right, the left… everybody seems to have a book or two they want banned, an idea or two they don’t want expressed. Well, I say it’s spinach, and I say the hell with them.

Donate some money, get a tax deduction, visit the world of the Wild Cards, and add a swell signed collectible to your collection… that’s a win, win, win, win if I ever heard one.

And thanks.

Flying High with Wild Cards

I’ve got all sorts of good news for the Wild Cards fans reading this.

LOWBALL, the twenty-second volume in the overall series, and the second part of the current triad that began with FORT FREAK, is almost complete, and should be going in to Tor very shortly. I will be sure and let you know when a publication date is announced. My thanks to my friend and co-editor Melinda Snodgrass for helping me bring this one home.

And the story continues. I’ve just signed contracts with Tor with the next Wild Cards book, a full-on mosaic to conclude the triad. This one will be titled HIGH STAKES.

Tor’s reprints of the first three volumes of the original series have also done very well (well, WILD CARDS and ACES HIGH have done well, JOKERS WILD is still forthcoming), so I am thrilled to announce that we will be continuing with those as well.

We’ve just signed for four more volumes. New Tor editions of ACES ABROAD, DOWN & DIRTY, ACE IN THE HOLE, and DEAD MAN’S HAND will be coming your way during the next few years, probably as trade paperbacks. And to make things even more interesting, we will be adding three brand new original stories to ACES ABROAD, just as we did for Tor’s reissue of WILD CARDS, volume one.

SFBC4

And Wild Cards readers outside the US are going to have plenty to read as well. After far too long, we finally have a new deal in the United Kingdom, where Gollancz/ Orion will be publishing British editions of WILD CARDS, ACES HIGH, JOKERS WILD, INSIDE STRAIGHT, BUSTED FLUSH, SUICIDE KINGS, FORT FREAK, and LOWBALL.

Wild Cards will be invading France as well. We’ve just closed a deal with J’ai Lu for French translations of the first six volumes in the original series: WILD CARDS, ACES HIGH, JOKERS WILD, ACES ABROAD, DOWN & DIRTY, and ACE IN THE HOLE. (More foreign deals are in the offing but I will hold off on those till the contracts are signed).

We’ve had a long strange run with Wild Cards… but from all appearances, we’re only getting started. If you haven’t tried the books yet, what are you waiting for?

Wild Cards eBooks

Tor has just announced a special holiday sale on the electronic editions of four Wild Cards ebooks. From now until December 14, ebooks of the three Committee books and the reissue of WILD CARDS volume one (with! extra! added! content!) will be only $2.99.

Details can be found here:

http://www.tor.com/blogs/2011/11/wild-cards-ebooks-now-299

If you’re an ebook reader who has yet to sample the Wild Cards series, here’s your chance to get a taste. I’d recommend that you start with either WILD CARDS (where it all began) or with INSIDE STRAIGHT (first of the “next generation” books, and a great intro to the world). But hell, at that price, you can buy all four for less than the price of a pizza.
