We had a great time Tuesday night at the Jean Cocteau. Melinda Snodgrass handled the interview task, with me as the subject, and did a wonderful job. Sellout crowd, and of course I signed a lot of books — DOWN & DIRTY, KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, and the new coloring book.

((Autographed copies of all three will soon be available from the JCC website)).

Next up, in November…

DEBORAH HARKNESS returns on November 8, to sign THE BOOK OF LIFE.

And two days later, on November 10, we’ll have a launch for the WHEEL OF TIME companion.

Coming to the Cocteau

We have some great stuff coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema in the weeks to come.

Starting this weekend, when we’ll be showing the classic BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Come Tuesday, we’ll have another author event, this time featuring… yes, ME.

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS came out October 6 and has been riding high on the lists. And Tuesday October 27 is the official release date for both Bantam’s official ICE AND FIRE adult coloring book, and Tor’s reissue of Wild Cards volume five, DOWN & DIRTY.

All three titles will be available for sale at the JCC. MELINDA SNODGRASS will be on hand as well, to interview me. A question-and-answer will follow, and then I will adjourn to the lobby to sign books (but no personalizations, sorry). However, tickets are already half-gone for this one, and we anticipate another sellout… so if you want to join us, contact the theatre (by phone or via our website) and reserve a book and a place now.

Come Halloween weekened, we’ll be showing something old and something new… ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (with a live performance by Rocky Horror New Mexico) and THE CREEPING GARDEN, a film about… wait for it… SLIME MOLD. (Where else but the JCC?)

The Martian…

… will be at the Jean Cocteau on Monday, in the person of Andy Weir. We’ll be talking about his novel, and the movie, and he’ll be signing books.

ADDENDUM: Sorry, slowpokes. Jon has just informed me that the Andy Weir event is SOLD OUT. ((Don’t say I didn’t warn you)).

Our next author event will be… hey, ME… on October 27. Followed by Deborah Harkness on November 8. Watch the Cocteau website for details. I expect those events to sell out as well, so be prepared to pounce as soon as tickets are available.

The Martian Is Coming

No, not the movie (curse you, Fox). The writer.

We had a great evening last night with William Gibson, but at the Jean Cocteau we like to keep the big nights coming… so we’re bringing in ANDY WEIR on October 19 for a reading, a talk, and a booksigning.

We’re not being allowed to show the film (but you can catch it down the street with our friends at the Violet Crown), but we’ll have plenty of copies of the novel on hand, and Andy will be here to scrawl in them and answer all your questions about book, movie, and planet.

And hey, I will be there as well, so all you Martians can also pick up a signed copy of OLD MARS, if you like, and maybe an OLD VENUS for good measure.

Andy Weir is one of the few SF writers I’ve yet to meet, so I am really looking forward to hosting him at the Jean Cocteau. The fun starts at 7pm. Reserve your book and your ticket at our website, and come join us.

Cyberpunk Comes to Santa Fe

Hugo- and Nebula-winning author William Gibson, the father of cyberpunk and author of NEUROMANCER, will be coming to Santa Fe tomorrow night (October 6) for a reading, Q&A, and booksigning at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

Bill will be signing copies of his latest novel, THE PERIPHERAL. Admission is free with the purchase of a hardcover book, $5 with the purchase of a paperback, and $10 sans book purchase.

Coming to the Cocteau

For all you New Mexican out there… and for travellers passing through the Land of Enchantment… we have lots of cool stuff coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema these next couple of months, starting this Friday when we open EVEREST.

We also have some cool special events and booksignings coming up.

On October 6, WILLIAM GIBSON, the father of cyberpunk, will be here for an interview and Q&A, and to sign copies of new novel THE PERIPHERAL. Reserve your copies early; we expect a sellout, as with many of our author events.

From October 9 through October 14, we’ll be hosting a WES CRAVEN RETROSPECTIVE, to honor the late great director whose death on August 30 saddened millions of his fans. I had the honor of working with Wes once — he directed one of my TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, though sadly the episode was gutted by CBS before broadcast. A great guy, and an immense talent. We’ll be showing several of his best known films, and hope to bring in some special guests via Skype.

On November 8, another author event. This time we are bringing in bestselling author DEBORAH HARKNESS. Harkness was originally scheduled a few months ago, but flight delays forced a cancellation… but this time we hope the airlines will be more helpful, and get her to Santa Fe on time.

We had sold-out houses for our burlesque performances earlier this month, so we’re going to do it again… this time with the SUICIDE GIRLS!

Alas, our small (very small) stage at the JCC isn’t big enough to accomodate all the Suicide Girls, so we’ll be offering a somewhat downscaled version of their usual show… but that should still be pretty kickass, and there is something to be said for an intimate setting. And as everyone who has seen them knows, the Suicide Girls never disappoint.

That one should be a sellout too. A portion of every ticket will be donated to our friends at the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary down in Candy Kitchen.

More Signed Books

We’ve just added two more titles to the Signed Books page at the Jean Cocteau: the Jack Vance tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, and SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH, original tales of star-crossed love.

While the supply lasts… which will not be long… these will be available in both hardcover and paperback, with autographs from both me and my co-editor Gardner Dozois. ((Hard to get both, since Gardner and I are seldom in the same place at the same time, especially these days)).

For those who want to stand up to the bullies and rabids and their Tor boycott, please note that SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH was published by Tor. (They were also Jack Vance’s publisher for most of the last few decades).

SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH was published by Fallery Books in hardcover and Pocket Books in paperback, and contains work by Jim Butcher, Diana Gabaldon, and many more.

We have also added some new titles (all SIGNED) by Jo Walton, Susan Orlean (her biography of Rin Tin Tin is fascinating reading) and Anne Perry, among others.

Locus Award to ROGUES

Would that I could be in two places at once. While I was off in Germany, Sweden, Finland, and the Aland Islands, I was winning an award in Seattle.

ROGUES, the latest in the series of massive cross-genre anthologies I’ve edited with Gardner Dozois, won the Locus Award for the Best Anthology of 2014. The award is voted annually by the readers and subcribers of LOCUS, the PUBLISHER WEEKLY of science fiction, and a “must read” publication for anyone seriously interested in our genre.

I’m thrilled to say that one of the stories in the book also took home a Locus plaque — Joe Abercrombie won Best Novelette for “Tough Times All Over.” ROGUES also had two runners-up on the list, a novella by Patrick Rothfuss and a novelette by Scott Lynch.

The two LOCUS Awards are the latest additions to the anthology’s awards haul. Gillian Flynn’s story for ROGUES earlier won an Edgar, and the book itself was voted a Stabby Award by the members of the Reddit online community.

More Signed Books

Speaking of signing books… as I was in the post below…

For all of you who are enjoying OUTLANDER, the marvelous adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s time travel novels that just finished its first season on STARZ… well, the show is terrific, but the books are even better (as is so often the case), and we have AUTOGRAPHED COPIES of the whole Outlander series and the ‘Lord John’ spinoff books as well available via mail order from the Jean Cocteau Bookshop

If you haven’t been watching OUTLANDER, you’re missing a terrific TV series. Gorgeous to look at, and the performances by the three leads are terrific. Tobias Menzies, who played Brutus on HBO’s ROME and Edmure Tully on GAME OF THRONES, is especially noteworthy in a double role. (I just hope we’ll be able to get him back, if and when D&D decide to return to the riverlands).

(OUTLANDER ‘feels’ like a cross of historical fiction and romantic adventure, but the time travel element definitely qualifies it as SF, or at least fantasy, so it’s a show worth remembering next year when Hugo nomination time comes round again).

OUTLANDER films in Scotland, GAME OF THRONES primarily in Northern Ireland. Between the two shows, I doubt there’s a single major actor in the British Isles we haven’t used yet. Great casts. Diana got sixteen episodes for one novel, two eight-episode half-seasons, which had me gnashing my teeth in envy… until I remembered that OUTLANDER has no dragons, direwolves, or ice zombies, and so far no major battles either. Though, if I recall my history, that will be coming… the battles, that is, not the dragons.

I might also mention WOLF HALL, another excellent TV series from the UK based on novels, in this case on Hilary Mantel’s novel of the same name and its sequel. Makes an interesting contrast with THE TUDORS series that Showtime ran a couple of years ago. We do not, alas, have signed copies of WOLF HALL available, since Hilary Mantel has never visited Santa Fe…

… but we do have the OUTLANDER books. While they last. And lots more besides.

Autograph Hounds

For all of you autograph collectors out there…

My partner in crime Gardner Dozois is cleaning out his house in scenic Philadelphia, and he just send me two big boxes of OLD MARS and OLD VENUS hardcovers, all signed.

I’ve added my own illegible scrawl to the title pages, to go with his.

Since Gardner and I live two thousand miles apart, getting a copy of one of our anthologies signed by both of us is not easy. So here’s your chance.
