Locus Awards Shortlist

LOCUS has announced the shortlist for its annual awards, and I’m pleased to report that SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, the Jack Vance tribute anthology I co-edited with Gardner Dozois, has been nominated in the Best Anthology category.

((Three of the five nominees in Best Anthology were edited or co-edited by Gardner, who is also up himself in the Best Editor category. Despite which, he is convinced he is going to lose both awards. That’s why we call him Eeyore.))

Neil Gaimain’s story for SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH is also a finalist, in Best Short Story, and Vance’s autobiography has been nominated in Best Related Book.

The Songs Are Heard Again

The Subterranean Press hardcover of our Jack Vance tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, is sold out in all editions (lettered, numbered, and trade). But if you missed your chance, don’t despair. You can still read a baker’s score of Dying Earth stories from twenty-one of today’s leading fantasists… the Voyager hardcover has just been released in the UK.

This will be one of the books that I will be signing in Ireland next month, at the events in Belfast and Dublin… but if you can’t wait to read the stories, or happen to live someplace other than Ireland, you can snag at copy from Amazon UK or your favorite British online bookstore. The Amazon listing is at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Songs-Dying-Earth-Stories-honour/dp/0007277482/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255117666&sr=8-1

SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH was co-edited by me and Gardner Dozois, and includes a preface by Jack Vance himself, an appreciation by Dean Koontz, and stories by Neil Gaiman, Dan Simmons, Howard Waldrop, Mike Resnick, Phyllis Eisenstein, Kage Baker, Paula Volsky, Walter Jon Williams, Liz Williams, Tad Williams, Byron Tetrick, Elizabeth Moon, Elizabeth Hand, Jeff Vandermeer, Terry Dowling, Matthew Hughes, John C. Wright, Glen Cook, Lucius Shepard, Tanith Lee, Robert Silverberg, and yours truly. You’re not likely to find a lineup to match that in any other anthology. Reviews have been very gratifying:

SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH is now out of print in all editions, Subterranean Press informs me.
(The lettered and numbered versions will ship as soon as the slipcases come in)

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Sorry if you missed your chance the snag a copy of this beautiful illustrated edition. You can still read the stories, though. The Harper Collins Voyager hardcover from the UK will be along in October, and can be preordered from Amazon UK. Tor’s edition will follow in about a year.

Subterranean Press reports that they are down to their last seventy-five copies of SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, the Jack Vance tribute anthology, co-edited by me and Gardner Dozois and featuring stories by Neil Gaiman, Dan Simmons, Phyllis Eisenstein, Paula Volsky, Walter Jon Williams, Glen Cook, Howard Waldrop, and many other top fantasists and Vancephiles, all gorgeously illustrated by Tom Kidd.

If you’ve been thinking about picking up this one, this may be your last chance to snag a copy before the illustrated edition goes out of print. Once that happens, you’ll need to wait for either the UK edition from HarperCollins Voyager (later this year) or the Tor edition (late 2010).

The Genius of Jack Vance

Wonderful article in the NEW YORK TIMES about Jack Vance:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/19/magazine/19Vance-t.html?%20_r=5&partner=rss&emc=rss

It is nice to see one of our genre’s few authentic masters finally getting some recognition from the mainstream press. I agree with most everything that’s said here: Vance is not only a great SF and fantasy writer, he’s a great writer, period, and deserves a place in the canon of American literature.

Vance Tribute Available on Amazon UK

I should mention that the Subterranean Press editions of our Jack Vance tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, are not the only versions. Luitingh will be offering a Dutch translation of the book in the Netherlands, Tor will be doing a trade hardback and trade paperback in 2010 and a mass market paperback the following year… and Harper Collins Voyager will be publishing the title in the UK, for all Jack’s British and Australian fans.

The British version of SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH is now available for preorder from Amazon UK at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Songs-Dying-Earth-George-Martin/dp/product-description/0007277482

The stories, of course, will be exactly the same in all editions. Only the Subterranean Press editions will include Tom Kidd’s interior illustrations, however.

Whichever version you buy, Gardner Dozois and I hope you will enjoy the read.

SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, the big Jack Vance tribute anthology I edited with Gardner Dozois, is at the printers now, but you can get a free sample of the treats awaiting you therein, courtesy of Bill Schafer and the other good folks at Subterranean Press.

“Sylgarmo’s Proclamation,” Lucius Shepard’s original novellette of the Dying Earth, is now available at Subterranean Online at http://subterraneanpress.com/index.php/magazine/spring-2009/

So take a look… and if you like what you see, copies of the illustrated trade hardcover are still available from Subterranean. But don’t wait too long. The lettered and numbered editions are already sold out, and Tor’s hardcover won’t be published until 2010.

All you Vance fanatics out there… if you’d like a taste of the treats that we have in store for you in the forthcoming Jack Vance tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, be sure to check out the new issue of Subterranean Press’s online magazine, SUBTERRANEAN.

This issue was guest edited by Gardner Dozois, the most honored editor in our genre and my partner on the Vance book and WARRIORS. Among other treats, it contains a brand-new Dying Earth story from Lucius Shepard. “Sylgarmo’s Proclamation” is only one the twenty-one original tales of the Dying Earth featured in the anthology. Just a taste to whet your appetite for more. We think you’ll like it.

The issue also features stories by Carrie Vaughn (of Kitty and Wild Cards fame), a novella by Paul McAuley, novelettes by Joe R. Lansdale, Liz Williams, and Ken McLeod, and other good stuff.
