Lovecraft in the Land of Enchantment

We had a great time last week when H.P. Lovecraft returned from the grave to visit us here in the Land of Yig Enchantment.

If you missed it — shame on you — well, it turns out that HPL recorded a couple of segments of his “Ask Lovecraft” YouTube series while he was here in town.

Seeing HPL at Meow Wolf was especially fun, since there are a couple of… ahem… decidedly Lovecraftian touches to be found in the House of Eternal Return.

If you ever get a chance to see Leeman Kessler perform as HPL, do catch him. It’s the next best thing to a shuggoth on your doorstep.

A couple of cool new additions to our Wild Cards website went up today.

On the blog, John Jos. Miller talks about gaming in the Wild Cards universe… and his own life story. Check it out at: http://www.wildcardsworld.com/the-secret-origins-of-the-wild-card-universe/

And over in our video section, our own March Madness… in August. Which is to say, the highlights from the Wild Cards Cage Matches from MidAmericon II:

A Night of Comedy and Magic with Joel Ward – Presented by Jean Cocteau Cinema

Ogre Jenni here – yes "Ogre" is my awesome job title. Nice to meet you!

Jean Cocteau Cinema, our lovely little cinema in Santa Fe, proudly welcomes comedian and magician Joel Ward to our stage on Friday, September 11th and Saturday, September 12th. You can find out specific showtimes and purchase tickets here!

We love magic shows at the Cocteau, and we seek out a variety of magicians with unique personalities and theatrical stylings. Take some of our previous magic shows for example. The Amazing Misty Lee brought a spooky Victorian elegance to her seance-themed performances, and Francis Menotti's magic possessed intellectual, surreal, and art historical qualities. This time around, we have a stage thief named Joel Ward. Think "Vegas!" We're pretty sure that stars and beautiful ladies sparkle around his head at all times. Joel's act is flashy, funny, and incredibly polished. His "prestidigitations" (commonly known as 'sleight of hand') are simply awe-inspiring. No dumb ol' quarters will be pulled from behind people's ears—try flocks of flaming doves or sequined assistants (chopped in half or whole—we don't know.)

Okay, I can't absolutely promise flocks of flaming doves or portions of sequined assistants, but I can promise plenty of audience participation. And regular magical doves. In other words, expect nothing short of perfection. *

A little bit about Joel Ward:

Joel was a World Champion Teen Magician by age 15, and he placed 1st at the International Brotherhood of Magicians annual competition, which is the World’s Largest Magic Organization. He performs hundreds of shows per year, and he has been featured on the Bonnie Hunt Show, The Masters of Illusion, and for the Barnum & Bailey Circus show, Boom A Ring. He has also made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and on Comedy Central's Tosh.0. In other words, he's kind of a big deal.

Watch the highlight reel below for a taste of what Joel Ward will bring to the Cocteau! See you there!

* No regular magical doves or sequined assistants will be harmed during Joel Ward's performances.

… later that same night.

As previously announced here (see below), John will be coming to the Jean Cocteau to perform  his stand-up show I STOLE YOUR DAD, "presenting new observations on subjects including how to dress like a young and relevant person, fax machines and other obsolete technology, marihuana and Downton Abbey, the state songs of Tennessee, the film criticism of Ayn Rand, and how to spend your time when the world did not end like you were certain it would on December 21st of last year."

John's appearance is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Monday, June 2… but though the show is still six weeks away, we've had such a demand for tickets that we're almost sold out.  The Cocteau, please recall, has only 125 seats.  As of this morning, we had sold 108 tickets.  We expect the last few to be gone by week's end.

So it thrills me to announce that John Hodgman has agreed to do a second show for all his fans in Santa Fe.  The second show will also be on Monday, June 2, but starting at 9:00 pm.  Tickets to the late show will be available from the Cocteau website    http://www.jeancocteaucinema.com/   starting today.  You can also call the theatre at 505-466-5528 or drop by the box office in person.

If you want to snag one of those last dozen or so tickets to the 7:00pm show, I'd advise you to act ASAP.  Meanwhile, for the night owls and those shut out of the early show, we now have the 9:00pm performance.  Admission is $20, with discounts for students and seniors.

John Hodgman is an author and performer best known as the “Resident Expert” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, his COMPLETE WORLD KNOWLEDGE trilogy, and for his podcast and New York Times Magazine column, Judge John Hodgman.

See you at the show.

Comedy at the Cocteau

Movies are not the only thing we offer at the Jean Cocteau.  Since reopening in August, we've had live music, magic, vaudeville, costume contests, some amazing author events and booksignings, birthday parties, Skype interviews, lectures, meetings… and now for the first time we are going to bring some great stand-up comedy to Santa Fe.

Author and comedian JOHN HODGMAN will be coming to the Cocteau on June 2 to perform his stand-up show, "I Stole Your Dad," presenting new observations on subjects including how to dress like a young and relevant person, fax machines and other obsolete technology, marihuana and Downton Abbey, the state songs of Tennessee, the film criticism of Ayn Rand, and how to spend your time when the world did not end like you were certain it would on December 21st of last year.

This event is still two months off and hasn't even been officially announced in our newsletter or put up on our website yet, and yet as of this afternoon we had already sold more than 80 tickets.  The Cocteau has only 125 seats, but if you'd like to come and hear John, do head over to our website and get your tickets now, before they're all gone.
