Odds and Ends

Time is flying by again, and I am starting to get stressed out, as always before travel. I’m home this weekend, but the weekend following I am off to Fargo for Valleycon. Get back on Monday, have a few days at home, and then I am off again for my big trip across the pond to visit the shoot, do those signings in Ireland, and then down to Morocco for more of the pilot. And so much to do before I leave…

Travel has gotten so bloody complicated these days. Even with a good travel agent, the airlines make things as difficult as possible with all these fares, rules, schedules, etc.

On other fronts, the Jets have picked up Braylon Edwards from the Browns. Not sure how I feel about that. Supposedly he’s a “big time receiver,” whatever that is, but he leads the leagues in drops. I like my big time receivers to catch the ball. Also, he punched out that little guy at a nightclub, and could very well be facing a suspension. Besides, I liked Chansi Stuckey, thought he had a lot of promise. Well, we’ll see.

Another part cast on the pilot. Our prologue trio is now complete.

Anybody who wants to buy a book from my website, this is the time to do it. I’ll be taking orders through next Thursday, then closing things down until Thanksgiving.

Back to work.

Dance, Dance, Dance

Finished a Jon Snow chapter, and have just passed the 1100 page (manuscript pages, the page count in the final printed book will be different) mark on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. That’s counting only finished chapters in something close to final form. I have considerably more in partials, fragments, and roughs.

Even with just the finished portions, DANCE is now longer than A FEAST FOR CROWS and A GAME OF THRONES, and I’m closing in on A CLASH OF KINGS. I do hope I can wrap things up before I approach the 1521 page length of A STORM OF SWORDS.

Making a new run at the Meereenese knot, but maybe not tomorrow. I think I’ll hang around at the Wall a bit longer, and maybe visit Winterfell.

Pity Poor Missouri

ConQuest (in Kansas City) and Archon (in St. Louis) are two of my favorite regional conventions. I’ve been attending both, off and on, for decades. I have lots of good friends in Missouri. Some of them are even football fans.

This has not been their year, to say the least. The Chiefs and the Rams are both 0-4, and the prospects of either one getting better soon is not high. And now, to drip some acid into the wounds, ESPN reports that right-wing gasbag Rush Limbaugh is attempting to buy the Rams.

Oh, dear.

If this goes through — and I certainly hope that it does not — I wonder how all the black players on the Rams will feel about playing for such an outspoken racist? Or perhaps Rush will attempt to emulate George Preston Marshall, former owner of the Redskins, who kept his team all white when the rest of the league had integrated.

Oh, and here’s some sportswriters from all across the country weighing in on the prospects of Rush as an NFL owner:

Nice to see some people speaking out.

You Win Some, You Lose Some

Another convincing win for the Giants yesterday, though the opponent was the hapless Kansas City Chefs. “Our” Steve Smith looks like the real deal. A few more games like this and he will be “the” Steve Smith, and that guy in Carolina will have to become “the other” Steve Smith. Not so sure about Mario Manningham, who was dropping or bobbling every pass that came his way… but my, wasn’t that touchdown run by Hakeem Nicks a pretty thing.

Eli’s injury is a concern, though. Right now they are saying “bruised heel” and “no big thing.” I hope they are right. If we have to go with Davis Carr for any length of time, the season is over, and I may finally be required to maim and kill Pat St. Denis. (I wish they’d kept the Hefty Lefty, I’d have more faith in him than David “Sack Machine” Carr).

The Scottish Kicker missed another field goal that he should have made. That is worrisome as well. Sooner or later his inconsistency is going to cost us a game. It almost cost us the NFC championship two seasons back in Green Bay. Yes, he made the game winning field goal, but only after he had missed two previous tries. They should have kept John Carney.

As for the Jets game… well, I never thought they would go undefeated. The good news was that Rex Ryan’s defense had another great game, shutting down the high-flying Saints O for most of the contest. The bad news, of course, was Mark Sanchez. I don’t blame him for the last two interceptions, which were desperation heaves in the final minutes of the contest. The first one, though, the pick six, that really hurt, and the fumble in the end zone hurt even more, negating as it did a heroic goal line stand by the defense.

Yes, I know, only a rookie, yadda yadda, growing pains, yadda yadda, he’ll learn from this, yadda yadda.

So they lost, but to a strong team. The Saints are for real. Should be fun to see them take on the Giants in two weeks time.

Next week the Raiders come visit the Giants in the Meadowlands, led by my JaMarcus “I Complete More Than a Quarter of My Passes”) Russell. The Jets are on the road for a Monday night game in Miami, where the QB doesn’t have much more experience than Sanchez. Jets / Dolphins games are always exciting.

Here’s the latest greens from Dark Sword Miniatures for their Ice & Fire range — the long-awaited pair of Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain That Rides, and Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne, dueling to determine the guilt or innocence of Tyrion Lannister on the charge of regicide.

The sculpts are by Tom Meier, the one and only. Amazing work, as always.

You can see a lot more pictures on Dark Sword’s website at http://darkswordminiatures.com/ Ser Gregor will also come with an alternate arm and head (sans helmet), so you can work him up as you see fit. He was helmetless when he faced his brother Sandor during the Tournament of the Hand, so a second diorama could easily be made with Mountain and Hound.

Tom is now busy sculpting Brienne.

October Already

The months never used to go by this fast.

Or the years. Gak. One more birthday and I’ll be eligible for Social Security. That’s bloody terrifying. It seems like only last week I was doing “new writer” panels at cons, scanning reviews to see if I was being mentioned as of the Young Turks of SF, and chasing after Parris (see avatar).

This should be a good month, though. The HBO pilot will start filming in just three more weeks or thereabouts. This time next month I will be in Belfast, visiting the shoot. And maybe seeing some scenery like this:

(That’s actually one of my favorites of Michael Komarck’s calendar art, fwiw. I had hoped by this time to be able to announce the publisher and artist for the 2011 calendar, but we’re still waiting on the contracts. Soon, I hope).

… is at home on the internet as in the haunted forest. He has a home page, a Facebook page, a MySpace page,

… has something in common with Peter Parker,

… began as a boy on a bike,

… has something in common with Daenerys, Jaime, and Ser Jorah,

… has already announced his appearance in GOT on his own home page, so why am I even bothering with these clues?

Just sayin’

Riders Wanted

Ever since HBO first took out an option on A GAME OF THRONES — even before we got an actual production order — I’ve been getting emails from readers who desperately wanted to be a part of the production. “I’ll do anything!” some of you have written. ((Really, don’t say stuff like that. Really. Don’t.))

Well, now’s your chance. The call has gone out for extras. Details here:

http://www.extrasni.com/news

Of course, you need to be in Northern Ireland, or get yourself to Northern Ireland. They’re shooting this mostly in Belfast and environs.

And it would help to know horses. As you can see, their biggest need right now is for experienced male riders. (I imagine they could use some female riders too, though maybe not as many. And if not, hey, that’s why they invented false beards.)

But I’m in Santa Fe, so I’m not the guy to write to about this. Inquire as above.

And good luck. Maybe I’ll be meeting some of Belfast, a month from now.
