More Miniatures

Just wanted to post a couple more of the lovely figures from Dark Sword Miniatures.

These two are from the latest release in their Ice & Fire line — a wildling warrior and a lady of the court. They were painted for me by Matt Verzani, and a splendid job he did.

The wildling was sculpted by Jeff Grace, the court lady by Tom Meier. Both of them are available (unpainted, but there are many fine painters on the net who take commissions if you lack the skill yourself) at http://darkswordminiatures.com/

Goodbye, W. — Hello, Hope

The worst president in my lifetime has finally helicopted off into the sunset.

He’s left his successor a quagmire almost unparalleled in American history; two wars, the worst economy since the Great Depression, an eviscerated Bill of Rights, a bleeding Constitution, an international reputation that could hardly be lower. President Obama is going to have his work cut for him to repair all the wounds Bush inflicted on the nation. I think he is equal to the task, but it won’t be easy.

Today’s ceremonies made a good beginning. The road back home is a long one, but we’ve taken the first step.

Words Fail Me

From Jim Ludwig:

“Lillian left this world holding the hand of God at 8:41 pm CST tonight. She peacefully died in our arms as we talked to her telling her how much we love her and how amazing our exactly 100 days to almost the minute were before she had her incident at Daycare.

She then held on for 3 long days as a last gift to us so we could say our goodbyes and let our friends/family say their goodbyes. She was such a little trooper trying to breathe on her own and fight through this. She just could not breath enough to sustain herself on her own after the brain damage. There were glimmers of hope here and there, but the damage to her brain was so devastating from the initial daycare incident, all of her upper brain functions were gone.

Melissa and I will never be the same as sharing our brief time with Lillian has changed us forever. They were the most amazing days of our lives and also the most devastating at the end. Please see the attached pics we took the night before the incident (some are a tad older). She was so happy and so talkative. She was the same the morning we took her to daycare. We have no answers yet except some sort of SIDS-type attack that happened at Daycare.

Please pray for Lillian.”

Prayers for Lillian

January 14, 2009 at 12:19 pm

I’ve just received some terrible news from my friends at Dark Sword Miniatures. Their daughter stopped breathing Monday at daycare, and is in the hospital.

Jim writes:

“circumstances are grave. she will most likely not make it, but we are holding out hope for a miracle recovery.

could you say a prayer for her and ask your readers to pray for her?

She is only 3 months old (and so healthy) and this came out of nowwhere.

She is hooked up to a breathing machine but will once in a while fight in a breath of her own as her little body tries to get better.

Her brain is in really rough shape.

I am typing this from a hospital laptop.

If you and your readers could keep our daughter in your thoughts, we would be thankful.”

I hope that all of you will join with me in sending your prayers and good wishes to little Lillian, and hoping for a good outcome. You can send your messages of support directly to her parents via jludwig@darkswordminiatures.com.

Thanks.

Life is meaningless and full of pain.

Cardinals, Ravens, Eagles… these playoffs are for the birds.

Grumpy Old Phan

So I’m watching ESPN this morning and they’ve got a story about the upcoming playoff game between the Ravens and the Titans. Ravens rookie QB Joe Flacco has been given a nickname by his teammates, the reporter announces — “Joe Cool.”

Pfui. I have nothing against Joe Flacco, who seems to be a promising young talent, but why can’t this new generation of NFL players make up their own fraking nicknames??? There’s only one Joe Cool, and his last name was Montana, not Flacco.

And while I am on the subject, there’s only one LT, and he was a linebacker for the New York Giants, not the oft-injured running back for that team in San Diego.

Next thing we know, ESPN will be telling us that some wet-behind-the-ears young kids just out of college want to be called “Night Train” and “Crazylegs.” Well, I saw it’s spinach and I say the hell with it.

The commish needs to start slapping big fines on these clowns for inappropriate misappropriation of nicknames.

Guardians of Order RPG

The pristine, undamaged copies of the Guardians of Order GAME OF THRONES rpg book are now all gone. Sorry.

I do still have some copies with minor water damage available at $55 plus shipping, and some with major water damage available at $20.

((LATER))

My lady Parris has asked me to add the following addendum to this post:

“Although George’s stock of the gorgeous Guardians of Order RPG limited
edition is now depleted, I still have a few copies.

Those copies will be donated to charity auctions for good-deed-doing
over the next few years. Usually we donate an item or two to the
charity auctions held at conventions we attend, or to on-line auctions
such as last year’s “Match It for Pratchett” campaign.

So for those unhappy collectors who weren’t able to get a copy before
George sold out, there’s still hope you can get one in the coming
years, if you attend a convention we’re at, or you see that I’ve
donated one to an on-line auction. An added bonus will be helping out
with a good cause as well as getting a copy of this incredible book.”

Vance Book Selling Fast

Just a word to the wise… and all the myriad Jack Vance fans out there. According to the latest news on the Subterreanean Press website, “our mammoth (over 600 pages) tribute anthology to Jack Vance, Songs of the Dying Earth, is preselling exceptionally well. We’re down to the last 50 copies of the signed limited edition, and the trade hardcover is more than half sold out. If you’re game for a copy of this book, we suggest ordering soon.”

To order a copy of your very own, go to http://www.subterraneanpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=martin07&Category_Code=PRE&Product_Count=24

And while you’re there, you can also preorder a copy of Jack’s autobiography, IT’S ME, JACK VANCE, which Subterranean has just announced. I’m looking forward to that one myself.

Speaking of books in short supply, I should also mention that I now down to four (4) remaining pristine copies of the huge, lavishly illustrated GAME OF THRONES rpg book from the defunct Guardians of Order. Once those are gone, only the water-damaged copies will remain. If you want to snag one of these last four, you’ll find the details on the Signed Books / Limited Edition copies of my website.

A lot of people are taking me up on the new year sale for TUF VOYAGING, by the way. Yes, I still have plenty of copies of the regular hardcover. Of the limited, not so much. Order via PayPal. Just use their Send Money function to send payment to me at georr@aol.com, and be sure and let me know if you want the book inscribed, or just signed. Thanks.
