Odds and Ends and Snow

Another snowy day in Santa Fe. Winter has bloody well come, and refuses to leave.

Yesterday’s SUICIDE KINGS signing at Barnes & Noble in Albuquerque went well, I think. We had a nice, enthusiastic crowd and signed a lot of books. Poor Vic Milan came down with some sort of creeping crud and had to cancel, but Carrie Vaughn, Caroline Spector, John Jos. Miller, Ian Tregillis, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Daniel Abraham, and yours truly were all on hand, defacing books. We signed a considerable amount of stock as well, so if you’re looking for an autographed title by any of the above, contact B&N at Coronado Center.

Speaking of Wild Cards, we have some good news for my Italian fans. I’ve just signed contracts for Italian language translations of the first three volumes of the series (WILD CARDS, ACES HIGH, and JOKERS WILD). The publisher will be RCS Libri. Needless to say, if these books do well, the rest of the series will follow in good tine.

On other fronts, I’m going to be coming to Minnesota in November. Fantasy Flight Games is bringing me in as a special guest for ‘Days of Ice and Fire,’ a weekend-long celebration of Westeros at FFG’s new Events Center in Roseville, MN. FFG will be running tournaments for their Ice & Fire card game and board games, and I’ll be doing a Q&A, several signing sessions, and maybe a reading from A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. More details can be found on FF’s own site at http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=1120 We’ll know more about the schedule when we get closer to the event.

Another visit to a big midwestern city is in the works as well, and much sooner than the FFG event, but I can’t talk about that one yet. Watch this space. Announcement soon.

Just A Reminder…

… for all you New Mexicans, and anyone passing through.

Tomorrow (that is, Saturday, February 20) is the SUICIDE KINGS signing at Barnes & Noble in Albuquerque. It’s at the Coronado Center B&N, starting at 1:30 pm, and lasting… well, until we’ve scrawled in all the books you have for us.

In attendance, besides myself, will be SUICIDE KINGS contributors Melinda (Double Helix) Snodgrass, Victor (Radical) Milan, Daniel (Bugsy) Abraham, Ian (Rustbelt) Tregillis, and Caroline (Bubbles) Spector. (The elusive S.L. Farrell will miss this one too. He’s a hard man to pin down).

Also on hand, all the way from Colorado, will be wild carder Carrie Vaughn, who will be signing copies of her new Kitty Norville novel, KITTY’S HOUSE OF HORRORS.

Carrie will be glad to sign her stories in INSIDE STRAIGHT and BUSTED FLUSH too, as will John Jos. (Carnifex) Miller, also expected to be on hand. And for Wild Card completists, there’s a chance we might also glimpse Gail (Peregrine) Gerstner Miller, Laura (Lamia) Mixon, and maybe even Ty (Tinkerbill) Franck.

So be there or be square.

SUICIDE KINGS in Albuquerque

By popular demand, we’ve scheduled another Albuquerque mass signing for the latest Wild Cards hardcover, SUICIDE KINGS (volume twenty in the overall series, and the third and concluding book of the current triad).

This time we will be at the Barnes & Noble in Coronado Center, on the southwest corner of Menaul and Louisiana NE in Albuquerque. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 20, and will run from 1:30 pm until… well, it says 3:00 here, but really, until we run out of people who want us to deface their books with our illegible scrawls.

On hand, besides yours truly, will be our local Wild Carders Melinda M. Snodgrass, Daniel Abraham, Victor Milan, John Jos. Miller, and Ian Tregillis… whose character Rustbelt is featured there on the cover (he’s the one losing the pith helmet). Caroline Spector will be coming in from Texas to join the festivities, and Carrie Vaughn will be coming down from Colorado. Carrie’s latest, KITTY’S HOUSE OF HORRORS, the seventh volume in her NEW YORK TIMES bestselling Kitty Norville series, will also be out, and copies will be available for signature. I imagine B&N will have INSIDE STRAIGHT and BUSTED FLUSH on hand as well, for them what missed ’em (shame on you), along with lots of other titles, old and new, by the participating authors.

So if you’re in the vicinity of New Mexico on the 20th, drop on by. We’d love to see you.

Odds and Ends

SUICIDE KINGS is out in hardcover (see below) and BUSTED FLUSH has been released in mass market. Meanwhile, I’ve delivered the additional content — three new stories — for the first volume of this storied series, WILD CARDS itself, which Tor will be reissuing later in the year. Since the first volume was historical in nature, telling the story of the wild card from 1946 to 1985, adding some original material to cover some of the “lost years” seemed like a natural.

The three new tales:
— “Captain Cathode and the Secret Ace,” by Michael Cassutt,
— “Powers,” by David D. Levine,
— “Ghost Girl Takes Manhattan,” by Carrie Vaughn.

No publication date yet. You’ll know when I do.

As for FORT FREAK, the twenty-first volume in the series that WILD CARDS began, first drafts are all in, I’ve given the usual editorial note, and the writers are all off revising. This one looks to be a lot of fun. The Class of 2009 is doing some great work, and the old-timers ain’t half bad either.

On other fronts, Gardner Dozois and I are very close to delivering our original cross-genre anthology STAR-CROSSED LOVERS, to Pocket Books. We’re waiting for some minor revisions from one writer. Once those are in hand, the book will be delivered. Only it’s not STAR-CROSSED LOVERS any longer. Pocket’s sales force did not like that title, so the anthology has now been rechristened SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH. Got a great line up of writers for that one, including Diana Gabaldon, Jim Butcher, M.L.N. Hanover, Peter S. Beagle, Marjorie Liu, Jacqueline Carey, Carrie Vaughn, Robin Hobb, Neil Gaiman, and many more.

Everybody’s talking about AVATAR, which I haven’t seen yet… but I have been going to movies. While the crowds queue up for Cameron, I’ve been catching up on some of the other films now in release. I enjoyed THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, and liked INVICTUS as well, but the one that really impressed me was ME AND ORSON WELLES. The guy who plays Welles should get an Oscar nomination for that performance.

As usual, I am way behind on my Xmas shopping.

Where does the time go?

Pat of Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist runs good contests, evil Dallas Cowboys fan that he is. Right now he’s giving away five sets of the first two books in our current Wild Cards triad, INSIDE STRAIGHT and BUSTED FLUSH.

Check out the details at http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2009/11/win-set-of-wild-cards-novels.html

Meanwhile, Tor has scheduled the release of SUICIDE KINGS, the third and concluding volume of the Committee triad, for December 22.

The contributing writers for this one are Ian Tregillis, Caroline Spector, Melinda Snodgrass, Victor Milan, S.L. Farrell, and Daniel Abraham.

Rustbelt, the Amazing Bubbles, Double Helix, the Radical, Gardener, and Jonathan (Bugsy) Hive provide the threads for our tapestry in this tale of love, war, revenge, and madness in the heart of darkness… but other Wild Cards favorites will also appear, including Cameo, Hoodoo Mama, Lohengrin, Dr. Finn, Popinjay, and many more. Not to mention the usual host of new characters, in parts both large and small.

So draw an ace for Xmas, and give Wild Cards a try. You won’t be sorry.
