Something Old, Something New

The final covers are in on the new two Wild Cards books in the pipeline, and I thought I’d share.

LOW CHICAGO is the second volume in our “America” triad, and will be the twenty-fifth volume in the overall series (at least in the US). This one will feature stories from Wild Card veterans John Jos. Miller, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Kevin Andrew Murphy, Mary Anne Mohanraj, and Paul Cornell, plus newcomers Marko Kloos, Saladin Ahmed, and Christopher Rowe. Featured characters this time around will include John Nighthawk, Noel Matthews, Natya, Will O’ Wisp, Croyd Crenson, Abigail the Understudy, Khan, Meathooks, and Hardhat. The cover art is by Michael Komarck.

LOW CHICAGO is scheduled for a hardcover release on June 21.

Only month later, in August, Tor will be reissuing ONE-EYED JACKS, the eighth volume in the original series, which has been out of print for more than twenty-five years. The original lineup for that one featured Melinda M. Snodgrass, Walton (Bud) Simons, Chris Claremont, William F. Wu, Lewis Shiner, Victor Milan, Stephen Leigh, and John Jos. Miller… but we’re also adding two brand new stories, by Carrie Vaughn and Kevin Andrew Murphy, so the 2018 version of JACKS will be even better than the 1991 edition. The cover for this one is by David Palumbo.

ONE-EYED JACKS will be released on August 28 in trade paperback.

We also have a couple new posts on the Wild Cards blog, from Walter Jon Williams and William F. Wu. Check them out at http://www.wildcardsworld.com/blog/

Hey, Denver! Da Wolf Is Coming!

The Wolf is headed north. The Meow Wolf, that is.

It’s been in the works for more than a year, but today the news became official. My friends at Meow Wolf are opening a second location, right up I-25 from us in Denver. The new Meow Wolf will not just be a duplication of Santa Fe’s House of Eternal Return… for starts, it will be three times larger. But expect the same mythos, the same imagination, the same off-the-wall creativity.

The story is all over the news, so there’s no sense rehashing it here. Let me supply links:

Plans are for ground to be broken on Meow Wolf Denver later this year, with the complex opening in 2020. But… TICKETS ARE ALREADY ON SALE! So if you’d like to reserve a space for the opening week at the new location, head over to https://meowwolf.com/ asap.

And do come visit Santa Fe’s original Meow Wolf while you wait.

Season’s End

The NFL has wound up its regular season. Both of my teams had miserable years and are out of the playoffs. The Giants managed to win their final game, but thankfully the Colts won too, so the G-Men held on to the second overall pick in the draft. The Jets got crushed by the Pats, as usual.

Big Blue already has a new general manager and will be getting a new coach soon. I want a new Bill Parcells. Though I’d gladly take the old Bill Parcells if someone could coax him out of retirement. As for that draft pick, most of the mocks have the Giants taking a QB… but we still have Eli, and we don’t even know what Davis Webb will be yet. I’d prefer to see them trade down for multiple picks, and maybe take that stud running back out of Penn State. Let Eli play another year and bring Webb along before bringing in another QB.

The Jets, on the other hand, should take Baker Mayfield if he’s still on the board.

As for the playoffs, I don’t much care. In the AFC, I will be rooting for whoever is playing against Evil Little Bill and the Pats. In the NFC, no strong preference, but maybe a slight inclination toward the Saints. Love the city of New Orleans, and Drew Brees has been a class act.

Happy Holidays

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all my friends and readers out there.

I had a lovely Christmas Day with friends and family, and Santa was very good to me. I hope the same is true for all of you.

Even so, I look forward to the new year. I thought 2016 was a bad year, but 2017 was even worse… if not so much for me personally, then certainly for a lot of my friends and loved ones, and for the nation and the world as a whole.

I hope better times are ahead for all of us.

… and he’s landed in my back yard.

He’s a gift from m’lady Parris, and the work of a marvelous artist named Tyler Eugene Smith.

I love it.

And yes, Tyler’s the same amazing sculptor who made the Alfies for Spokane and Kansas City. For those he had old hood ornaments to work from, but the dragon he made from scratch.

Two More Down.

Life is meaningless and full of pain.

The Giants and Jets both played hard yesterday, but they both lost. Again.

The G-Men almost pulled off a stunning upset of the NFC-leading Eagles, but a bullshit non-call on pass interference in the endzone robbed them of the win. Eli passed for more than four hundred yards, showing why he should remain the Giants’ qb until he hangs it up.

At least the G-Men tightened their grip on that second overall draft choice.

It’s the Jets who need to draft a QB this year, though, not the Giants. Bryce Petty, filled in for the injured Josh McNown, did not impress.

Ah, the bleak December…

Publication Day…

… was yesterday for MISSISSIPPI ROLL, the latest volume in the Wild Cards series.

At least in the USA and Australia. The rest of the world will need to wait a little longer.

MISSISSIPPI ROLL features the work of Stephen Leigh, John Jos. Miller, Carrie Vaughn, Cherie Priest, David D. Levine, and Kevin Andrew Murphy, edited by yours truly with the assistance of Melinda M. Snodgrass. You’ll be rolling on the river from New Orleans to Cincinnati with old favorites like Carnifex, the Midnight Angel, Hoodoo Mama, Ramshead, Sewer Jack, Wild Fox, and the Jokertown Boys, and making the acquaintance of Steam Wilbur and the haunted steam packet Natchez. Although this IS the twenty-fourth book in the Wild Cards series, still going strong after thirty years, let me stress that it is not necessary to have read the first twenty-three to understand it. MISSISSIPPI ROLL stands perfectly well on its own, and the story it tells is complete in one volume

MISSISSIPPI ROLL can be preordered from your favorite local bookstore or online bookseller. Amazon has it at https://www.amazon.com/Mississippi-Roll-Wild-Cards-novel/dp/0765390523

Collectors who would like an autographed copy can order one from the bookstore at the Jean Cocteau Cinema at http://jeancocteaucinema.com/product-category/author/ (Signed by yours truly, you will need to track down the writers yourself).

Keep your steam up, boys and girls!
