Clarion 2010

Just a heads up to any aspiring writers reading this… especially those of you who don’t make it a practice to visit the Appearances page on my website.

I will be one of the instructors at the Clarion Workshop in San Diego next summer.

If you don’t know what Clarion is, or do know but would like more information, there’s a website at http://clarion.ucsd.edu/ Right now it still features the info about the 2009 version of the workshop, but they will be updating it for 2010 soon.

Clarion is very competitive, and not everyone who applies will be accepted, but if you’re serious about wanting to write SF and fantasy, give it a shot. It’s a great program, and an astonishing number of professional writers have come out of Clarion and Clarion West over the decades.

I get a regular stream of emails from beginning writers with questions on all aspects of writing and selling their work, most of which I don’t have the time to answer. (Though my website does include a FAQ). Come to Clarion, and you get all those questions (and many more) answered. Though you may not like the answers…

Anti-Clues

I wish I could tell you who will be playing Maester Luwin, Grand Maester Pycelle, the Hound, Ser Rodrik, Khal Drogo, Magister Illyrio, Gared, Will, Ser Waymar Royce, and Cersei Lannister… but those parts have not been cast yet, to the best of my knowledge.

A number of other parts have not been cast yet either. That list is by no means exhaustive.

We do have some great contenders, though, and of course I have my own favorites. A few of these might be filled by the end of the day tomorrow. Or not.

At this writing, the secret seven is still the secret seven.

Plax to Prison

So Plaxico Burress has agreed to a plea bargain, and will be going to prison for two years for sticking a loaded pistol in his sweatpants, taking it to a crowded nightclub, and shooting himself in the thigh. He also lost something like $27 million when the Giants dropped him, and may have lost his NFL career as well. He will be 34 when he gets out.

I don’t quarrel with the sentence. Plax was incredibly stupid, and he broke the law.

But our justice system does seem seriously out of whack. Plax gets two years for carrying a concealed weapon and accidentally shooting himself, Michael Vick gets two years for dog fighting, and Donte Stallworth gets thirty days for driving drunk and killing a man.

If I were king, I would have sent all three to jail, but Stallworth would have gotten the longest sentence, and Plax the lightest. Yes, Plax might have killed someone too, if the gun had gone off in the nightclub and the bullet had gone someplace other than his leg. But, ah, it didn’t. We don’t usually sentence people on the basis of what might have happened. Donte Stallworth actually DID kill another human being, no “might have” or “could have” involved.

And on the same note, I think Ray Lewis should have gone to prison too. Two people died that night, and I believe that Lewis knows who killed them, but won’t say.

But there you go. Sometimes I wish Justice would take off that blindfold.

One More

Seven kindoms, seven gods, and seven parts now cast that I can’t tell you about.

Ser Seven is another terrific award winning actor. He will be going back to a place he’s been before. This is a guy who once went to the wars with our Jaime, though it’s a good thing that Jaime wasn’t a kingslayer then, or all history might have been changed. And there are mountains in Westeros that he might know, though his character has never seen ’em.

More by week’s end, maybe.

And the announcement? Don’t ask me.

No News Is…

… no news.

No announcements from HBO yet. Sorry, I have no idea when they will release the names of the six actors cast but not announced. Soon, I hope. I know the speculation has driven many of you quite mad.

Things are progressing, though. The production offices have opened in Belfast, and soon pre-production will be underway in earnest. We have had a postponement, though: filming will start two weeks later than previously announced, on October 26 rather than October 12. No big thing, just a tweak to allow David and Dan and the rest of the gang to get all the ducks in a row. On a project of this size, you can’t have crooked ducks.

I expect to hear that several more roles have been filled by week’s end. Though that doesn’t mean I will be able to tell you who has filled them. Sorry.

Having worked in television myself for ten years, I understand how tough the choices can be sometimes, and I understand what David and Dan and Tom McCarthy are going through:

So all I can say is… be patient, and all shall be revealed.

High Fives for Green Ronin

Congratulations to Chris Pramas, Hal Mangold, Steve Kenson, Rob Schwalb, and the rest of the crew at Green Ronin Games. Friday night at Gencon in scenic Indianapolis, they picked up two of the coveted ENnie Awards for the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE RPG, winning the silver medal for “Best Rules” and the gold medal for “Best Free Product for Quickstart.”

One of these years I need to get to Gencon. I just wish it wasn’t always so close to worldcon, comicon, and the other big summer conventions.

Mea Culpa

Ooops. Just realized, I screwed up one of my clues. That was Juliet’s line, not Romeo’s.

Time to reread my Shakespeare, I guess.

Sorry about that.

The good folks at Fantasy Flight Games have come up with a terrific video tutorial on how to play their GAME OF THRONES card game.

Check it out at:

Michael the Eagle

And yes, Virginia, there are other things going on in the world besides the HBO pilot.

Like the NFL.

So the Eagles have signed Michael Vick. OK. I’m glad it was not the Giants or the Jets, truthfully… though I do believe in second chances, and Vick has served his time. Even so, I wouldn’t want him on my team. If his skills have not eroded too badly in prison, he will be a dangerous weapon for the Eagles, and my Giants have to face them twice… and sometimes three times… a year. So this clearly makes the Birds the favorites in the NFC East.

Fine with me. The G-Men always do better as underdogs.

The Waiting Game

/>Music: Alright, Still
I know, I know. Still no announcement from HBO, alas, and I can’t say when and if it will be coming. I know that many of you are going mad with impatience. Me too, actually. Sure, I know who has been cast, but I’m dying to see the reactions.

But we’re all going to have to wait. HBO calls the tune. And while we have six roles filled but yet announced, others of equal importance still remain unfilled. HBO may very well be waiting until some of those pieces fall into place before making the next announcement.

Meanwhile, some of you are warm and some are very cold. One of my clues seems to have been puzzled out by many of you, so I will fess up and admit that you’re correct — yes, the line about “small but important” roles refers to two of the children. You will, alas, never get those two. Even if I told you their names, you’d never find ’em. They’re not on IMDB, and when you google ’em you get dozens of listings for other people who share their names, but none for the child actors. So they’re essentially unknowns… but I have seen their readings, and I think that both of them will be great.

That still leaves four adults you can try to figure out, though. And among the hundreds of theories and guesses, I’ve seen a couple of you getting it right… or coming close, riding the right theory to the wrong conclusion. So keep at it.

In the absence of an announcement, I’ll give you a few more clues. One cast member was played by a puppet. Another has been seen wandering a castle exclaiming about roses. A third is too good to be true. The fourth is the fifth. Esquire thinks one of them is hot.

‘Nuff said.

And while you guys are chewing on those, off in London and New York and LA and Dublin, casting continues. They’re reading for some smaller parts now: Gared, Ser Rodrik, Maester Luwin, and the like. Even for these “lesser” roles (you know the old chestnut, there are no small roles, only small actors), we’re seeing some great readings. David, Dan, and Tom are going to have some tough decisions to make. Me, I’m going out for coffee and a danish.
