Back From LA

Just back from a week in LA.

I did Conan (the O’Brien, not the Cimmerian) and the Today Show, and taped a segment for a BBC special about Machiavelli… along with the usual dozen or so meeetings.

Also, while in town, swung by the Bookstar in Studio City and signed all their stock of my books, which was considerable. So if you’re an Angeleno or just visiting LA, and want to snag an autographed copy of one of my novels, get yourself to Studio City while the supply lasts.

And now I’m back in the land of wolves and savage dust storms, digging out from under.

Headed for Conquest

I hear that everything’s up to date in Kansas City, so I’ll be headed that way tomorrow to see for myself.

ConQuest beckons; KC’s annual regional convention, one of the best. Should be a good time. Patrick Rothfuss is GOH, John Picacio will be there, along with Brad Denton, Caroline Spector, and all of my old KC friends and partners in crime. I’ll be doing a reading, doing a panel, eating too much barbeque, drinking too much bheer.

And even before the con, we’ll have the road trip. I will be hitting the road with my Aussie friends, and driving right through the heart of Tornado Alley, which should be an… ah… adventure. If you’re in Oklahoma or Kansas and think you see me passing by, you may be right. The Big Well beckons… along with Dorothy’s House, Pancake Boulevard, the Cosmodrome, and the Elevator of Terror (you can’t make this stuff up).

Coming to Texas

I have a lot of readers in Texas, it would seem. Every time I make a book tour or attend a convention or blog about my travels to Europe or Australia or wherever, I get a rush of emails asking, “When are you coming to Texas?”

I can finally give the answer you Texans want to hear: I am coming to Texas NEXT WEEK.

I will be flying in on Thursday, March 21, to College Station, home of Texas A&M University, where my papers and manuscripts and such are all on deposit in Special Collections at Cushing Memorial Library. (A&M has one of the country’s great SF and fantasy collections, a treasure trove for scholars of the genre). I’ll be doing a reading, a signing, and speaking at a fundraising dinner, and many of my manuscripts and papers and collectibles will be on display.

DTS teaser

More information here: http://deeperthanswords.library.tamu.edu/

The library events, scheduled for March 21 and March 22, are all sold out, alas.

However, immediately after “Deeper Than Swords” comes AGGIECON, A&M’s storied sf/fantasy convention. I am staying for that one as well, so if you miss me on Thursday and Friday, you can still catch me on Saturday and Sunday.

You can check out the Aggiecon details at http://cephvar.tamu.edu/aggiecon .

Sign up there or at the door. Besides me, Aggiecon 44 (I told you, this is an old and storied convention) will also feature Ernest Cline of READY PLAYER ONE fame, and a number of other great guests. Ty Franck (also known as the back half of James S.A. Corey) will be coming with me, Howard Waldrop says he’ll be coming down from Austin, and some of my other Wild Cards writers may turn up too.

Last time I attended an Aggiecon it was… oh, I don’t know, 1980 or thereabouts… but I have fond memories of past visits to A&M, most of them involving great Texas barbeque, too much bheer, pretty college girls, and Aggies in uniforms politely but firmly asking me to remove my hat. ’twill be interesting to see if any of that still applies. Somewhere in A&M’s student union may be my lost youth… I know I had it the last time I visited…

And for those of you who can’t make it to College Station… have no fear, I will be coming back to Texas again this year, for worldcon in San Antonio over Labor Day. It’s too late to nominate for the Hugos now, but there’s still plenty of time to sign up for LoneStarCon 3, and see them awarded.

Parris Is Coming…

… to London.

She left a few moments ago for the airport, to spend a week in Old Blighty visiting with friends, spoiling the godchildren, and seeing the Pre-Rafaelite exhibition at the Tate, which is supposed to be amazing.

I’m staying here, to hold down the fort and write. And write, and write, and edit, and write some more. Too much damn work to do, and I am way behind on everything.

But I’m bummed. Especially about missing that Tate exhibition, which closes in a week or so. All work and no play…

((I really do need to learn to say no. I swear, I’m trying. No, NO, NOOOOOOOOO)).

Miss the Phipps already. Take good care of her over there, you Barmy Brits.

I shall labor on, writing fake history, feeding the many monkeys on my back.

A long, long day of travel yesterday, Barcelona to Atlanta to Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Followed by collapse.

But it’s a new day, and I am back at my desk in the land of green chile. Just finished getting caught up on my email. So much work to do.

Thanks for all my friends in Spain for making our visit so much fun.

Barcelona Bacchanal

Great times in Barcelona, one of my favorite cities. We’ve gotten lost in the wynds and alleys of the old city a couple of times, but what does it matters? Ther are great tapas, beer, and sangria any way you turn. And I am getting recognized everywhere, which is cool and scary both. My hat’s off to the three girls who rescued Jo and me when we were hopelessly turned around in the Ramblas a couple of nights ago.

Still, starting to miss home. Two more days. I love tapas, but I need green chile.

Aviles was wonderful, Celsius sensational, spent my mornings signing endless copies of my books, and my evenings drinking in sidewalk cafes with Joe Abercrombie, Lisa Tuttle, Colin Murray, Diego Cruz,Ian Watson, Cristina Macias, Adam Nevill, Dimitri The Russian Guy, and many Asturian friends.

Now I’m in Madrid, doing endless interviews for Canal + and posing on their Iron Throne. It’s hot here, but life is cool.

Home Again…

… for two whole days.

Had a great week teaching at Clarion West. A very talented group of young(ish) writers. You’ll be hearing from some of them in the next few years, I suspect. Assuming they want it badly enough. Persistance and hunger and a certain amount of luck are required to make it in the writing game, as well as talent. Anyway, I have left them to the not-so-tender mercies of Connie Willis, SFWA’s newest Grand Mis… er, Master.

Now I get to be home for those TWO WHOLE DAYS and catch up on a thousand emails.

On Wednesday, I am off to San Diego for Comicon. I go direct from there to Spain. Don’t expect a lot of posts here for the next month.

Got home last night, and slept and slept and slept.

This morning I feel almost human.

It was a great trip, but a long one. I am glad to be home.

Tons and tons of stuff to catch up on, of course. So much email… so much mail mail…

Best get to it.

Last Day in Lisbon

Portugal was grey and rainy, but the fans here could not have been warmer. We had amazing turnouts in both Lisbon and Porto, I did a hundred interviews and defaced thousands of books, stocked up on port and ginja, and now it’s back to London for a few more days. Come Wednesday I will be flying home… just in time for the NFL Draft!
