Carrie Is Coming

We have another cool author event Monday night at the Jean Cocteau.

CARRIE VAUGHN will be driving down to Denver to join us for the evening. We'll be having an hour of conversation and taking some questions from the audience, after which we'll adjourn to the lobby so Carrie can sign books.

Carrie is best known as the author of the bestselling urban fantasy series KITTY AND THE MIDNIGHT HOUR and its many sequels, about the adventures of a werewolf talk show host. LOW MIDNIGHT, her newest book, is a spinoff of sorts from the Kitty series, featuring one of the most popular of Kitty's supporting cast.

She has also been one of the mainstays of the revived Wild Cards series, creator of Earth Witch and Curveball and the whole American Hero concept that launched the "next generation" WC books in INSIDE STRAIGHT. Heinlein at the Cocteau

They used to call Robert A. Heinlein "the Dean of Science Fiction." For writers and readers of my geneation, and those before, Heinlein was a towering figure, the most important and iuential of the 'Big Three' of the Golden Age.

The first SF book I ever read was Heinlein's classic juvenile, HAVE SPACE SUIT, WILL TRAVEL. It made me a SF reader for life. For decades thereafter, RAH was my favorite writer. He was the first writer to win the 'Big One' — the Hugo Award for best novel — four times. (A record later equalled, but still never surpassed). But like many of his contemporaries, Heinlein did some of his best work at shorter lengths.

"All You Zombies" is one of those classic short stories. Like time travel yarns? Time paradoxes? "All You Zombies" was… is… will remain THE last word on all those subjects. And now, improbably, it has been made into a movie.

PREDESTINATION opens this week at the Jean Cocteau. I haven't seen it, but those who have (friends from Australia, where the film opened last summer) tell me that it's 1) quite good, and 2) quite faithful to the Heinlein story.

Must admit, I don't much like the title. I can see why they changed it — "All You Zombies" would have had people thinking it was a George Romero picture or a WALKING DEAD ripoff, when actually the use of 'zombie' is entirely metaphorical — but I wish they would have changed it to something a bit catchier.

But a rose by any other name… I am looking forward to this one. If you're a Heinlein fan, or a time travel fan, don't miss it.

We Got It!

Just got off the phone with Jon Bowman, the booker at the Jean Cocteau Cinema. Jon just got off the phone with Sony.

THE INTERVIEW will open at the Cocteau on Christmas Day. Four shows: 2pm, 4:30, 7pm, and 9:30.

We were otherwise going to be closed on Christmas. We're opening just for this film, and will devote the whole day to it.

We have booked a full run, so THE INTERVIEW will continue to run for two weeks, in rotation with the other films that we had already committed too before this all broke.

We may schedule some midnight shows if there's enough demand.

So come join us, and celebrate Christmas… and free speech… with Seth Rogen.

CHRISTMAS EVE ADDENDUM: All four of our Christmas Day showings are completely sold out. Tickets for the Friday shows are going fast, and those will probably sell out as well. We are adding extra shows on Saturday to accommodate the demand.

Sony to Release THE INTERVIEW

Exciting news this morning. Sony has announced that it will show THE INTERVIEW on Christmas Day at "selected theatres."

Twists and Turns

Sony's stance on THE INTERVIEW seems to take a new twist every day.

Now we are told that, yes, they are going to release the film. They are just not sure how.

Of course, this all depends on who you believe.

THE NEW YORK POST says they plan to release it on Crackle, their own streaming internet service:

I don't know about any of this.

What I do know is that Sony's statement that it "had no choice" but to cancel the film's release is plainly false. It had plenty of choices, and still does.

The best of those choices, I believe, is to open THE INTERVIEW in theatres on Christmas Day, as originally planned. I have been in communication with the owners and operators of other independent cinemas and arthouses, and representatives of some of the smaller chains, and I know that hundreds of these venues would gladly screen this film, if only Sony will make it available. Regal and AMC and the megaplexes may have caved, but the independents have not. Sony could have the film on five hundred screens by Christmas, if it wants to. And I would love for the Jean Cocteau to be one of them.

Signed Books For Xmas

Okay… at long last…

I can't reopen the "Signed Book" page on my website. I no longer have the time to answer the emails or fill all the orders. But for all of you who have been asking for autographed books, we do now have a way to fill your requests… through the bookstore at the Jean Cocteau Cinema. The site is now up and running.

Donato Is Coming Too

The Jean Cocteau Cinema is a movie theatre, first and foremost, but it is also a venue for live music, magic, and comedy, a meeting hall for community events, a bookstore offering a cool selection of autographed books… and an art gallery.

We have a new show every month, featuring painting and photography by an amazing and eclectic variety of local painters, photographers, cartoonists, and sculptors. Sometimes we feature visiting artists from out of state as well.

And next week, we'll be thrilled and honored to present the work of the DONATO GIANCOLA.

Fans of science fiction and artist art need no introduction to Donato, who has been one of the field's leading cover artists for the past couple of decades. A perennial Hugo nominee, he won the award for Best Professional Artist in 2006, 2007, and 2009. He was also won the Chesley Award, the Spectrum award, and numerous other honors and citations.

AND Donato is the illustrator for the official Ice & Fire calendar from Random House, which made its debut last summer at the San Diego Comicon. He did some really amazing work for that one.

We're having an official opening for Donato's show at the Cocteau next Thursday, December 18th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We'll have wine, mead, cocktails, and munchies, and the artist himself… yes, Donato is flying in to join us.

Copies of the 2015 calendar will be on hand and available for purchase and autographing.

And, best of all, you will be able to feast your eyes on some of Donato's original paintings. Amazing work from an astounding talent.

Sibel Is Coming

I think Sibel Kekilli has forgiven me for killing Shae. 🙂

She must have, surely, because she's coming to Santa Fe week after next.

Those of you who are GAME OF THRONES fans know Sibel best for her turn as Shae, of course… but this beautiful young German actress has done a great deal more of that. Among her other honors, she's won the Lola Award — the 'German Oscar' — not once but twice. In honor of Sibel's visit, we'll going to be screening the first of her Lola-winning performances. For three nights only, you can see HEAD ON on the big (well, medium sized) at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.
