Farewell to the Iron Islands

Fans of fake history rejoice.  I am finally done with the Iron Islands.

And why does that make me so pleased?  Well, because it was the last little bit I had to write for our long-awaited and much-postponed concordance, THE WORLD OF ICE & FIRE.  Which we've been working on (along with many other things) lo, these many years.  ((And yes, yes, it's late, what else is new?  Please do not blame my faithful collaborators, Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson.  They finished their part ages ago, and tossed the ball to me.  What can I say?  I remain as slow as ever.  And I added a lot.))

Anyway, it's done at last.  At least the writing part.  Now it is all in the hands of the artists, and our valiant editor Anne Groell.  (This will be a coffee table book, heavily and lavishly illustrated, so there's LOTS of art)).

World of Ice and Fire jkt - ElioLinda 1

Assuming we don't run into any problems with the art, THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE will be released this fall.  October, I think, but don't quote me on that.

And HEY, this means another monkey is off my back.  Only a couple left gibbering up there now.  That little joker monkey, HIGH STAKES.  And… gulp…

SON OF KONG.

Paperbacks Are Coming

Yes, it's true.  Your wait is over.  A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will finally be published in paperback, next month.

(Have you guys really been waiting?  Really truly?)

The paperback release has been delayed again and again, I know.  (Believe me, I've received a lot of emails about it).  This was done largely at the request of the bookstores.  The hardcover was still selling strongly (still is, actually), so they wanted the paperback delayed.

But no longer.  On October 29, Bantam Spectra will release DANCE simultaneously in trade and mass market paperback editions.

DWD5

And yes, the paperback will include a preview chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER.  (Though at this point it has been so long that I've forgotten which one it is).

October, by the way, looks to be a huge month for me.  Besides the DANCE paperbacks, I also have OLD MARS coming out that month, and the MEATHOUSE MAN graphic novel, and a little Xmas book called THE WIT AND WISDOM OF TYRION LANNISTER.  But more about that one later.

OLD VENUS Delivered

July 29, 2013 at 1:15 pm
Profile Pic

Another anthology done, another monkey off my back.

The last revision just came in on OLD VENUS, the latest (and last, for a time) original anthology that Gardner Dozois and I have been putting together.  Gardner will be delivering the final manuscript… well, e-manuscript… to our editors at Bantam Spectra later today.

Sixteen stories set on Venus.  Not, however, the real life Venus, with its rains of sulfuric acid and surface temperatures that would roast a man in the blink of an eye,  but the old watery pulp Venus of our lost youth, with its swamps, dinosaurs, and web-footed Venusians… Venerians… whatever.

The final lineup for this one will look like this:

INTRODUCTION, by Gardner Dozois
FROGHEADS, by Allen M. Steele
THE DROWNED CELESTRIAL, by Lavie Tidhar
PLANET OF FEAR, by Paul McAuley
GREEVES AND THE EVENING STAR, by Matthew Hughes
A PLANET CALLED DESIRE, by Gwyneth Jones
LIVING HELL, by Joe Haldeman
BONES OF AIR, BONES OF STONE, by Stephen Leigh
RUINS, by Eleanor Arnason
THE TUMBLEDOWNS OF CLEOPATRA ABYSS, by David Brin
BY FROGSLED AND LIZARDBACK TO OUTCAST VENUSIAN LEPERS, by Garth Nix
THE SUNSET OF TIME, by Michael Cassutt
PALE BLUE MEMORIES, by Tobias S. Buckell
THE HEART'S FILTHY LESSON, by Elizabeth Bear
THE WIZARD OF THE TREES, by Joe R. Lansdale
THE GODSTONE OF VENUS, by Mike Resnick
BOTANICA VENERIS: THIRTEEN PAPERCUTS BY IDA COUNTESS RATHANGAN, by Ian McDonald

This one is even more fun than our forthcoming OLD MARS, I think… and there's one story in there that's so bloody good that if it doesn't win the Hugo and Nebula both, I'll count it as a major injustice.  Which one?  Ah, I will leave you guys to figure that out.  But first you'll need to read the book.  Look for it along about a year after OLD MARS.

Gardner and I wish to categorically deny the rumor that we are now working on OLD URANUS.

Calendars Are Coming!!

Got some exciting news for those of you out there who still use calendars… ((yes, yes, I know we have this interwebbie thing now, nobody needs to hang paper on their wall any more to know what day it is, calendar sales are way way down, I don’t care, I am a dinosaur and a proud dinosaur and I LOVE calendars, so there))

The 2013 Ice & Fire calendar, with its spectacular artwork by Marc Simonetti, has done very well indeed, thank you. (And I hope all of you remember Marc when it comes time to make your Hugo nominations for Best Professional Artist).

9780345531544

The 2014 Ice & Fire calendar, illustrated by the amazing Gary Gianni, is almost complete. Those of you who were at Chicon may have seen some of Gianni’s paintings at the Brotherhood Without Banners party, since he was kind enough to display half a dozen of them exclusively for the BWB and their guests. He’s working on the twelfth and final painting now, and we expect the calendar to debut at this summer’s San Diego Comicon.

Martin 2014 3

Which means that is time to get cracking on the 2015 Ice & Fire calendar, and we’ve done just that. I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the artwork for the 2015 calendar will be provided by a man who truly needs no introduction, the Hugo-award-winning artist extraordinaire DONATO GIANCOLA.

If you are one of the six or seven people in fandom unfamiliar with Donato and his artwork, I suggest you remedy that lack immediately by paying a visit to his website at www.donatoart.com

Needless to say, I am a huge huge fan of his painting. This will not be Donato’s first visit to Westeros. Years ago, he did a gorgeous painting of Melisandre of Asshai as the cover for the special Westeros issue of DRAGON magazine. Ever since, I have been wanting him to do more… and now at last it seems I’ll get my wish.

Oddly enough, only a week ago or so I was in DC, enjoying the amazing exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite art that has just opened at the National Gallery. Looking over Donato’s on-line gallery with that so fresh in mind, it occurs to me that his own paintings could have fit right in with those of Millais, Hunt, Rossetti, and the other stalwarts of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

My friends at Bantam tell me that Donato is already hard at work, “far into reading the entire series, studiously taking notes, making thumbnails, etc.” I expect we’ll see some gorgeous things from him.

He has some tough acts to follow, of course. But hey, he knew the job was dangerous when he took it. I expect he is equal to the task.

And I must say, I am very pleased and proud with what our annual Ice & Fire calendar has become. Michael Komarck (2009), Ted Namisth (2011), John Picacio (2012), Marc Simonetti (2013), Gary Gianni (2014) and now Donato Giancola… if you love great fantasy art, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Music: Those Were the Days
Gardner Dozois and I have just learned that Bantam has scheduled our all-original retro-SF anthology OLD MARS for release on October 8 of this year. The anthology will feature fifteen original, never-before-published short stories and novelettes about Mars, story notes and author intros by Gardner, and an introduction by yours truly.

The setting will NOT be the real (but somewhat boring) post-Mariner Mars, but rather the Mars thatwe all loved as kids, the one with the canals and the dead cities and the myriad marvelous Martians.

Old Mars cvr rev

((Gotta love that retro rocket ship. I sure do)).

Here’s the lineup of stories and contributors:

RED PLANET BLUES (Introduction) by George R.R. Martin
MARTIAN BLOOD, by Allen M. Steele
THE UGLY DUCKLING, by Matthew Hughes
THE WRECK OF THE MARS ADVENTURE, by David D. Levine
SWORDS OF ZAR-TU-KAN, by S.M. Stirling
SHOALS, by Mary Rosenblum
IN THE TOMBS OF THE MARTIAN KINGS, by Mike Resnick
OUT OF SCARLIGHT, by Liz Williams
THE DEAD SEA-BOTTOM SCROLLS, by Howard Waldrop

THE LOST CANAL, by Michael Moorcock
THE SUNSTONE, by Phyllis Eisenstein
KING OF THE CHEAP ROMANCE, by Joe R. Lansdale
MARINER, by Chris Roberson
THE QUEEN OF NIGHT’S ARIA, by Ian McDonald

Gargoo and I had a lot of fun putting this one together, and I hope you folks will have as much fun reading it. So circle October 8 on your calendars. Old Mars is lovely in the fall.

Tuf Returns

February 9, 2013 at 8:05 pm
Profile Pic

Haviland Tuf is back in print, once more sailing his ARK around the galaxy, courtesy of the good folks at Bantam Spectra, who released their reissue of TUF VOYAGING n January 29. The new trade paperback contains all the wonderful Janet Aulisio interior illustrations from the Meisha Merlin hardcover edition, long out of print, as well as the complete stories first collected by Baen Books way back when, after their original publications in ANALOG, GALAXY, and ANDROMEDA.

Tuf Voyaging

The TUF VOYAGING reissue should be available now at your favorite local bookstore or online retailer.

(And for those who absolutely must have a hardcover, check out the Signed Books page of my website. I still have some copies of the old Meisha Merlin hardback, as well as a fast-dwindling stock of their numbered and lettered limited versions, and would be glad to inscribe them on request. First come, first served, for as long as the supply lasts).

PS I am often asked if I will ever write any more Tuf stories. The answer is yes, I would love to, and I have plenty of ideas for the further adventures of Tuf and Dax and the ARK. It’s just a question of finding the time. Right now, as some of you know, I am kind of busy with the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE novels and GAME OF THRONES tv show, not to mention Wild Cards and my other anthologies. So Tuf will need to wait. But he’s a patient guy, and I do hope to get back to him one of these days.

PPS It has also been suggested that I make TUF into a TV series. Hey, love to. But it’s not up to me. I need to find a studio and network willing to back a new space show to the tune of many millions of dollars, and that’s not easy. I have pitched Tuf before, and hope to pitch him again, Real Soon Now, but honestly, he’s a tough sell. Television likes its starship captains sexy, like Kirk and Captain Tightpants and Rocky Jones. Tuf is a towering, hairless, fat, pompouse fellow who talks like Alfred Hitchcock and loves pussycats. Not an easy part to cast either… but hey, every time I see Conleth Hill playing Varys, I go “Hmmmmmmmm.”

Maps! Maps!! Maps!!!

October 30, 2012 at 11:22 am
Profile Pic

Hey, hey, hey, it’s PUBLICATION DAY.

My latest Ice & Fire book should be in the bookstores today. It’s not the usual sort of book, admittedly… not an actual book at all, but a book-shaped box containing a whole bunch of gorgeous, glossy, fold-out maps of Westeros, Essos, and the lands and seas from A Song of Ice and Fire.

It’s from Bantam, and it’s called THE LANDS OF ICE & FIRE.

Lands-of-Ice-and-Fire[case]

This one is for the map geeks, I admit. Of which there seem to be a goodly number. I’ve had maps in all the novels, of course, but from the very first I’ve been getting emails from readers who wanted more maps, with more detail… and more… and more. What’s beyond that? What’s below that? What’s past that range of hills? Some… many… wanted a world map.

Which I was reluctant to do. I like my readers to see my world as my characters see it. And the truth is, medieval maps were not very good, by modern standards. A map drawn by an Englishman in 1300 might be fairly accurate for England and maybe France, but distortions and errors would start creeping in when you got to Italy and Germany, the Russias and the Holy Land would be more distorted still, Africa was largely unknown below the Sahara (even the coasts), and further east you started getting “the realm of Prester John” and “land of the two-headed men” and “here there be dragons.”

Which I said, more or less, in numerous interviews, and which did nothing to curb the demand for maps, maps, maps… especially that world map. I try to oblige. You will find a map of the “known world” in THE LANDS OF ICE AND FIRE… one that includes lands and seas you have never seen on any of my maps before… the plains and mountains east of Vaes Dothrak and Qarth for a start. (Remember that tapestry Xaro Xhoan Daxos gives Dany in DANCE OF THE DRAGONS?) Even so, it’s not a COMPLETE world map, no. The idea was to do something representing the lands and seas of which, say, a maester of the Citadel might be aware… and while the maesters know more about Asshai and the lands beyond than a medieval monk knew about Cathay, distance remains a factor, and past a certain point legends and myths will creep here. Here there be winged men, and such.

But one picture is worth a thousand words (who said that? must have been an artist, certainly not a writer), so here’s a little taste:

CentralEssosFlat

These are very nice maps, I hope you will agree. Huge and beautiful, and while they DON’T show the whole world (sorry, no, you’re not going to get the Westerosi equivilent of the Americas or Antarctica or Australia, assuming such places exist), you will get a glimpse of distant lands where my characters (and thus the novels) will likely never go.

East3

Of course, all of the more familiar lands and places are covered too. Westeros north and south, the Free Cities, Slaver’s Bay, the narrow sea… we’ve included some great city maps for both King’s Landing and Braavos.

Got to admit, I am kind of a map geek myself. This one was more work than I anticipated, but I had a lot of fun doing it, and I hope you’ll enjoy it as well. Go order your copy from Amazon or your favorite online bookstore, or pick one up at the local brick ‘n mortar, and know the lands of ice and fire as you never have before.

The official 2013 SONG OF ICE AND FIRE calendar is on sale at your favorite bookstore, br it brick & mortar or internet (if it’s not, time to find a new favorite bookstore). Some gorgeous artwork by Marc Simonetti this year.

And courtesy of Marc, and Random House, we also have a YouTube video about the “making of” said calendar, so you can see how all this comes together.

Enjoy.
