Just a reminder, for all of you in the Albuquerque area… and maybe a few who aren’t. Tomorrow is the big mass signing at Page One, New Mexico’s largest independent bookstore.

I’ll be there, pen in hand, to sign copies of BUSTED FLUSH, the latest volume in our new Wild Cards triad from Tor. Contributors Carrie Vaughn, Ian Tregillis, Caroline Spector, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Walton (Bud) Simons, John Jos. Miller, and Victor Milan will also be on hand. INSIDE STRAIGHT contributor Daniel Abraham is also supposed to drop by, and you may catch glimpses of some of the other Wild Cards writers as well.

Page One should also have stacks of other works by most of the particpating writers on hand, so you will be able to get all kinds of other books autographed as well.

And if the Wild Cards crowd isn’t enough, this will be joint event with mystery writer John Maddox Roberts, who will be signing the latest of his SPQR series of detective novels set in the late Roman Republic.

The event will run from 4pm to 6pm tomorrow (Saturday, March 7) at

PAGE ONE BOOKSTORE
11018 Montgomery Blvd NE
Albuquerque, New Mexico

See you there!

Wild Cards Discussion

I got an email from a reader who wanted to know if there was a site out there where the Wild Cards books were being discussed and debated the way the Ice & Fire books are on the Westeros board. The short answer, alas, is “no.” There is no ‘Wild Card Westeros.’

There are a half-dozen different sites where the books have been discussed. The liveliest of them is Captain Comics, at http://www.captaincomics.us/forums/index.php?board=35.0

There is also Tor’s official Wild Cards site at http://www.wildcardsbooks.com . No message boards there, but plenty of bios, author interviews, special “outtatkes” and exclusive content, even some links to old Wild Cards panels at worldcons past.

And last but not least, there’s the wonderful UK fan site Wild Cards OnLine, with a wealth of detail about the books and characters. That one can be found at http://www.wildcardsonline.com/

All of them are well worth checking out.

For Your Hugo Consideration: Best Novella

February 19, 2009 at 3:32 pm

There are four Hugo Awards given for prose fiction.

Best Novel is pretty self-explanatory. Novels are defined as works over 40,000 words. Short Story is for works under 7,500 words. Novelette covers stories from 7,500 to 17,500 words. And Novella is for stories longer than 17,500 words, but shorter than 40,000.

Novellas are so long they tend to fill up most of an average issue of a magazine, but too short to be published alone as a book, so typically only a few make it into print each year, compared to hundreds of short stories and novelettes.

Last year I had the honor of editing three extraordinary novellas in the Wild Cards books. Unlike the magazines, however, Wild Cards doesn’t include a contents page where the stories are broken down and labelled as novellas, novelettes, and short stories, so even our Wild Cards fans may not be aware that these WERE novellas… especially since two of them were published as interstitial narratives, and the third was broken into four parts.

They were:
“Jonathan Hive,” by Daniel Abraham, from INSIDE STRAIGHT,
“Political Science,” by Walton (Bud) Simons & Ian Tregillis, from BUSTED FLUSH,
“Double Helix,” by Melinda M. Snodgrass, from BUSTED FLUSH.

INSIDE STRAIGHT was published in January of last year and BUSTED FLUSH in December, so all these stories are eligible for this year’s Hugos. All three of them were terrific, in very different ways. I urge you to remember them when filling out your nominating ballot:

Thanks for your consideration.

The latest Wild Cards book, SUICIDE KINGS, is finished, and has just been delivered to our editor at Tor Books. Look for it in late 2009 or early 2010. For more details, check out the story on my News page.

It’s nice to have that one complete.

Alas, this does not mean my back is monkeyless. Couple more still sitting up there, including King Kong, the dragon monkey. But you guys know about him.

C’mon, ya filthy apes. Let’s all get back to work.

And here’s another Wild Cards interview. This one is not with the writers, but with a couple of the characters — Earth Witch and Curveball, Carrie Vaughn’s dynamic duo from INSIDE STRAIGHT.

Check it out at http://jackiekessler.com/catandmuse/2008/12/11/a-super-twofer/ and see what Kate and Ana have to say.

Not everyone who reads my Live Journal reads the news page on my website, I know, and vice versa. Many read both, however, so I’ll just briefly mention that Green Ronin has released its new Wild Cards role-playing game.

The campaign setting book, lavishly illustrated in full color, was written by John Jos. Miller, and should be available soon at a game store near you. It’s a great resource for any Wild Cards fan, even if you don’t game. For more details, check out my news page.

The Hard Call

Oh, almost forgot to mention. It’s April, and the first issue of the new WILD CARDS comic book is on the stands, so run, don’t walk, down to your favorite neighborhood comic shop and buy a copy. That’s “The Hard Call,” written by Daniel Abraham with art by Eric Battle, featuring long time favorite Croyd Crenson (aka the Sleeper) and a host of cool new characters. It’s available in the “regular” edition, here.

and also with a special painted variant cover by Arthur Sudyam.

Speaking of comics, Marvel’s adaptation of “The Sworn Sword,” the second HEDGE KNIGHT novella, is also on the stands right now. The fifth and sixth issues came out while I wasn’t looking, it would seem. (Where has this year gone?)

You New Yorkers can get all of these, and much much more, at next weekend’s New York City Comicon. I won’t be there myself, but my friends from Marvel and DBPro will be. And be sure to stop by the Tor booth to learn more about our future plans for WILD CARDS, and the Bantam booth to pick up your free (FREE!) copy of SPECTRA PULSE with a never-before-seen preview chapter from A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. And no fair running home to put it up on ebay!

Wild Cards RPG

For the Wild Cards fans among you — we’re just announced a new deal with Green Ronin Games for a new WILD CARDS rpg. John Miller will be writing the campaign setting. Details on the Green Ronin website, my own website news page, and soon on John’s live journal, I’m sure.

WILD CARDS originally grew out of a role-playing game called SUPERWORLD, so in a sense we’re going home again. I’m sure that John will do a great job… and Green Ronin makes some seriously cool games.
