Last Day in London

Today’s my last day in London (for this part of the trip). I’ll be turning up at the London Book Fair and taping some interviews there for HBO, then heading back to the hotel to pack for Portugal. Off to Lisbon in the a.m.

Was down on Oxford Street yesterday afternoon, and I popped into the Waterstone’s there and signed all their stock. So if any of my UK readers want a signed copy or three, that’s where you’ll find ’em… while the supplies last.

The day before, we caught WAR HORSE on stage. AMAZING show. More impressive than the film, I think. The puppetry is magical. We also got to meet several of the actors. My thanks to my friends at HBO for getting us the tickets, and to John Bradley West for helping set up the backstage visit.

ANd before THAT was our after-hours HarperCollins party at the Tower of London, else wise known as The Publishing Event of the Year. Turns out I have readers amongst the Beefeaters.

So, yes, you can say, this has been a swell trip.

Off Again

Seems as though I just got back from Toronto, and tomorrow I am off again — this time for England and Portugal.

The UK comes first. Signings in Bath and London (details on my website), a visit to the London Book Fair, and best of all, EASTERCON at Heathrow. I hope I will see some of you there, and we can hoist a pink or three.

And from there it’s on to Portugal, and appearances in Lisbon and Porto. Not nearly as long as visit as I’d like, but I’m looking forward to it.

I don’t often log on while on the road, so posts here will be few and far between for the next few weeks. Though Ty may drop in from time to time with some announcements.

Back home just in time for the NFL Draft!

I expect that the UK will be a No Tebow Zone. That will be a relief.

Home Again

Got back from my latest trip to Toronto yesterday afternoon.

(The avatar pic here is from my FIRST visit to Toronto, in 1973, for Torcon 2. My second worldcon, and first trip ever outside the United States. Yes, I was that young once. Yes, there was a time before the beard.)

A fun four days, albeit frantic. The signing at Indigo Books drew a huge crowd, with a line that snaked out the store and way, way, down the block. They told me afterwards that it was the biggest signing the store has ever hosted, breaking the record previously established by Bill Clinton. Hey, cool! That 1996 encounter with Clifford the Big Red Dog still rankles, but I outdrew the Big Dog Bill, so…

It really was great to meet so many of my Canadian readers, and I am sorry that our meetings were of necessity so very short. That would not be my choice, by any means, but when the line is so long you need to keep it moving. As it is, some people got there that morning before the shop opened, and were waiting all day… my hat’s off to them, and also to those brave fen who drove all the way in from Montreal just to get my illegible scrawl.

I hope everyone also managed to drop in on the GAME OF THRONES exhibit at TIFF Lightbox, and get your photo taken on the Iron Throne. The exhibition was a hoot and a half, with one piece that… well, let us say, it startled even me.

Besides the signing, and a couple of presentations at TIFF (one open to the general public, one for film and television students from the TIFF ‘master class’ program), HBO Canada and Random House Canada also set me up for lots and lots of interviews, so I’ve been popping up all over Canadian television and radio these past few days.

Here’s one, for those who missed it: my guest shot on Canada’s late night talk show TONIGHT, with George Stroumboulopolous.

I will embed and/or link to some of the other interviews when and if they go up on the net. Meanwhile, it’s back to work for me. As usual when I travel, I have lots of catching up to do.

March Madness

Somehow it has become March already. Where did January and February go?

Two months of the year are gone, and already I feel as if I’m two months behind.

And things only get crazier from here.

CANADIANS, take note! I am heading up to Toronto in less than two weeks. I’ll be speaking and reading at the Toronto International Film Festival (sorry, they tell me the event is already sold out), and the signing at Indigo Books. Dates, times, and other details available on my website, so go check there for links.

Back home after that, and back at work, but then at month’s end I am off again, this time to the UK, where I will be Guest of Honor at Eastercon, this year at Heathrow. I will also be doing a couple of signings, one in Bath and one in London. From the UK, I head to Portugal, and events in Lisbon and Porto. Back home again just in time for the NFL Draft (didn’t think I’d miss THAT, didja?).

In between all this, I have, hmmmmm, lemme see, one two three four FIVE projects that I am currently working on, four of which were due months ago… but it’s the fifth that has all my attention now, that I absolutely must finish and deliver before the trip to the UK.

(Oh, and somewhere in there me and my assistants and my accountant must find time to prepare my taxes, so I can write the IRS the biggest check that I have written in my life. I am going to be much, much poorer by month’s end)

Busy, busy, busy.

I love the work, actually. I just hate the deadlines.

Home Again

Back home again. Returned from New York/ New Jersey yesterday.

It was a great trip, and an eventful one. More on all that shortly.

Oh, and for those still looking for autographed books… I hit the big B&N on Fifth Avenue and signed their stock of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and other titles before leaving town. So that’s three locations in NYC that should have signed copies for the holidays. For as long as the supply lasts.

… you can find autographed copies of my books at McNally Jackson Books on Prince Street in Manhattan. While the supply lasts. Tell ’em I sent you.

Then take your book to Lombardi’s for a kickass pie.

Books for Xmas

Every year, come the holiday season, we get a lot of orders for the signed books offered on my website: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/books.html

The biggest rush is in early and mid-December, from readers planning to use the books as Christmas gifts. Often the buyers send extra money for priority mail, to make sure the books arrived by Christmas.

And that’s all great. Usually.

But this year, it’s not going to work. I am heading east the first couple of weeks of December, for reasons I cannot disclose yet, so I won’t be here to sign books or ship them. And when I return, mid-month, I’m going to be too busy digging out from under and doing my own holiday shopping to deal with orders.

Accordingly, we’ll be closing the “bookstore” on December 1. It will not reopen until the new year, after the holidays.

So if anyone out there is thinking of giving an autographed title of one of my old books as a Christmas present, please place your order in the next two weeks.

Thanks. (And happy reading and happy holidays to all).
