Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer are coming to Santa Fe, and we've got them!

neil2Amanda3

What actually goes on during the Neil and Amanda Show, you may ask?  Well, there will be music, stories, autographing, and… you'll need to come and find out.

That's Sunday, September 29, starting at 7:00 pm.  Tickets are on sale RIGHT NOW.

Admission will be $75, except for the nine (9) seats in our front row, which will go for $100.

This is a charity event, and one hundred per cent of the box office will be split between two worthy causes: Warehouse 21 and its youth programs http://www.warehouse21.org/ , and the Food Depot, which helps feed hungry New Mexicans http://www.thefooddepot.org/   So help us raise some much-needed funds for these great causes, and spend a Sunday evening with Neil and Amanda.

(Yes, they will gladly sign your books and CDs, and we'll have lots of both for sale on site).

We expect another sellout for this one, so if you'd like to attend, get your seats early.  You can get a ticket via the Jean Cocteau website, or by calling us at 505-466-5528.  (Have your credit card ready).  No more than four (4) tickets per customer, please.

Remember, the Cocteau only seats 120.

See you at the show.

UPDATE:  We've sold seventy tickets since I posted this, just a few hours ago.  If you want one, buy now.

SECOND UPDATE: I left the theatre a couple of hours ago.  At that time we had sold one hundred twelve tickets.  Leaving… uh… eight.  We can squeeze in a few temp seats as well, maybe… but I expect by now the regular seating is all sold out.  I need a bigger theatre.

Great Night at the Cocteau

We had a great time last night at the Jean Cocteau with the first of our author events.

Hugo-, Nebula-, and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon was on hand to sign books and read from his latest, TELEGRAPH AVENUE.  Before that part of the program, however, I inteviewed Michael for ninety minutes or so about his life, career, books, and views on writing and literature.  The Cocteau was packed, our first "sell out" crowd since we stopped giving away free tickets.  We  had to turn away about twenty people, sad to say (next time, guys and gals, get those tickets in advance).  Those who got in were glad they did.  Popcorn, pizza, and talk about books, can't beat it.

Michael is a great guy and a great writer, and a delightful conversationalist.  We were thrilled to have him.  He's on his way to Pittsburgh right now, and will be reading and signing at a B&N tonight, so if you're in the Pittsburgh area, still time to attend.  In subsequent days he'll be appearing in Cleveland, St. Louis, and Kansas City as well.  Be sure to see him if you get a chance… and snatch up a copy or three of TELEGRAPH AVENUE, KAVALIER & CLAY, GENTLEMEN OF THE ROAD, or one of his other titles.

Oh, and I also wanted to mention Michael's limited edition Brokeland t-shirts.  You can snag one of them here:

http://teespring.com/brokeland

All the money raised by the t-shirt sales is going to 826 National and their youth literacy programs (http://826national.org/ ) and the McDowell Colony and their writers' retreats (http://www.macdowellcolony.org/ ), both worthy causes.

At the Jean Cocteau

September 14, 2013 at 1:10 pm

We had a cool event at the Jean Cocteau last night… the Santa Fe premiere of a locally made independent film, BLAZE YOU OUT, filmed and set in Espanola, just a half hour north of the City Different.  The producers, writers, directors, and several of the cast members attended the screenings and answered questions afterward, and we had a crowded and enthusiastic house.

Indy films don't get the nationwide multi-million dollar advertising campaigns of major studio releases, but the best of them are as good or better than most of what the majors churn out.  You probably haven't heard of BLAZE YOU OUT, but it's a good one.  Check out the trailer:

<lj-embed id=”366″ />

BLAZE YOU OUT has three more screenings at the Cocteau, if you're in Santa Fe.  If not, well, watch for it if it shows up at a theatre near you.

This week's other new offering at the Cocteau is I DECLARE WAR, another indy.  This one I haven't seen myself yet, but I hope to catch it later this week.

See you at the movies.

Michael Chabon Visits Santa Fe

[Michael Chabon, the only writer ever to win both a Pulitzer Prize and a Hugo Award, will be visiting Santa Fe next weekend, and we have the honor of hosting him at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

He'll be here this Saturday, September 14. The event starts at 7:00 pm.  He'll be reading from TELEGRAPH AVENUE, his latest novel.  I'll be interviewing Michael as well, talking books and writing and life & times and such.  Followed, of course, by a booksigning.

Admission is free with the purchase of a hardcover book, $5 with the purchase of a paperback.

chabon3

We have a goodly stock of Chabon titles in stock at the theatre — not only TELEGRAPH AVENUE (in both hardcover and paperback), but also his Hugo-winning YIDDISH POLICEMAN'S UNION, his Pulitzer Prize-winning THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY, the marvelous swashbuckler GENTLEMAN OF THE ROAD (echoes of Fritz Leiber and Harold Lamb, illustrated by the incomparable Gary Gianni), his book of essays MAPS AND LEGENDS: READING AND WRITING ALONG THE BORDERLANDS, and other titles.

chabon2

The Cocteau only seats 120, and we're getting a lot of interest in this event, so if you'd like to come join us for an evening with Michael Chabon, phone the theatre at 505-466-5528 ASAP to order a book… and thereby reserve a seat.

You can also order a book, and a seat, through the Cocteau website at
http://www.jeancocteaucinema.com/

See you at the show!

Mr. Potatohead at Jean Cocteau

Those of you in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, come join me tonight at the Jean Cocteau (418 Montezuma) for our first live performance.

We want the Cocteau to offer more than just films.  In the months and years to come, we will also showcase author readings and interviews and signings, magic, comedy, and… live music.  And tonight will be our first concert.  The Jean Cocteau Cinema was a Santa Fe icon, so to help us launch its second life, we're featuring two other iconic local performers — Gregg Turner, late of the Angry Samoans, and the Wolf Boy himself, Stephen W. Terrell, performing selections from the Pandemonium Jukebox.

<lj-embed id=”363″ />

The show starts at 9 pm.  Admission only $5.  We do not, alas, have our liquor license yet (though we're working on it)… but we will have plenty of pizza, popcorn, pastries, soft drinks to accompany the music.

And for those whose mommies let them stay out late, after Turner and Terrell we have our midnight show (which actually starts at 11pm), V/H/S 2.

<lj-embed id=”364″ />

((The midnight movie is a separate admission)).

See you at the show.

The grand re-opening week at the Jean Cocteau has gone by in a blur.  Only two more days to catch ORPHEUS and FORBIDDEN PLANET… for free.  So far, everyone seems to love the new art deco look of the entryway and concessions area, and our famous popcorn.  And the crowds have been great.  Of course, you'd figure that, with admission being free and all.

This weekend will be our first true test.  On Friday we start charging for admission.

We're going to continue to offer an eclectic mix of films.  Something for every taste, we hope.

Next up are SHOUTING SECRETS and EUROPA REPORT.  Check 'em out.

Seven Days And Counting…

August 2, 2013 at 8:56 am
Profile Pic

We're down to seven days till the grand re-opening of the Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe.

[That sound you just heard was me gulping.  Work is proceeding apace, but there's still a lot to do, and that opening is bearing down on us like a damned locomotive.  I need to whip my minions harder.]

First up, the classic 1956 MGM big budget SF classic, FORBIDDEN PLANET.

<lj-embed id=”356″ />

Tickets for FORBIDDEN PLANET… and Jean Cocteau's ORPHEUS and John Carpenter's DARK STAR, our other featured attraction… will all be FREE, but they're going fast, especially for opening night.  If you're in Santa Fe, drop by the box office and get yours now.

<lj-embed id=”357″ />

Oh, and we also hope to have signed copies of some of my books for sale at the theatre… and maybe other cool stuff as well.
