The GAME OF THRONES marathon continues next Monday at the Jean Cocteau Cinema, with a special guest.

RON DONACHIE, best known to GAME OF THRONES fan as Ser Rodrik Cassel, the master-at-arms at Winterfell, will be joining us from Glasgow via Skype for a Q&A after the screening.  We'll be showing two episodes this week: — "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things," and "The Wolf and the Lion," episodes four and five from season one.

The show starts at 7:00pm, and we will probably start admitting people into the hall at 6:00.  But come early.  Last week we had to turn hundreds away, and my loyal staffers tell me that those who joined the line after 5:30 did not get in.  (Sorry.  We have only 125 seats).  It's all first come, first seated; there's no advance ticket purchase, no reservations, no seat saving.  But admission is FREE.

The following week, January 20, we will be joined by MAISIE WILLIAMS, our own Arya.  And not via Skype.  Maisie is coming to Santa Fe.  (If you want to start lining up now for that one, it might not be too soon).

See you at the marathon.

Marathon Begins

The GAME OF THRONES marathon begins tonight at the Jean Cocteau Cinema, at 7pm.

It's first come, first seated, and we have only 125 seats, so get there early if you want to be sure to get in.

You won't be the first in line, though.  That honor goes to these brave souls, who camped out overnight (and it was COLD last night):

Tonight we will be screening the first three episodes of season one: "Winter Is Coming," "The Kingsroad," and "Lord Snow."

Admission is FREE.

We will have plenty of GAME OF THRONES merchandise on hand, along with pizza, soft drinks, candy, ice cream, pastries, burritos, and our famous popcorn, the best in New Mexico.  And… for the first time… tonight the Jean Cocteau will be offering BHEER!

See you there!

((AFTERWARD))

Whew.  That was fun.

Huge crowd.  We filled every seat.  We could have filled two more theatres the same size as the Jean Cocteau.  The show started at 7:00 pm and we opened the door by 6:00 to get folks in from the cold… but no one who got in line after 5:30 made it inside.  My apologies to all of you who got turned away.  Better luck next week.  Those who did get in had fun, I think.  The show, as expected, looks great on the big screen.

Next week (Jan 13) we hope to have one of our cast members joining us via Skype.  And the week after… drum roll, please… MAISIE WILLIAMS will be joining us in person right here in Santa Fe.  That's Monday, January 20.   Mark it down on your calendars.

And I have saved the best part for last.

Admission to all GAME OF THRONES screenings will be ABSOLUTELY FREE.

No tickets, no passes, no payment required.  First come, first served.  Come to the Cocteau and come on in… so long as we have seats.  But we only have 125 of those, so best come early if you want to be sure of a place.

We'll have door prizes as well.  Not to mention the best popcorn in town.

See you at the cinema, for GAME OF THRONES as you've never seen it before.

It's been a great week for GAME OF THRONES in Hollywood, with both the Screen Actor's Guild and the American Film Institute bestowing honors and recognition on the HBO series, and some of the folk who work so hard to make it great.

SAG announced the nominees for its annual awards this morning.  I'm thrilled to say that the cast of GAME OF THRONES are nominated as Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Television Drama, on a shortlist that also includes our familiar rivals BOARDWALK EMPIRE, BREAKING BAD, DOWNTON ABBEY, and HOMELAND.   The guild members also nominated our fearless stuntwomen and stuntmen for Outstanding Action Performance by Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.  BOARDWALK EMPIRE, BREAKING BAD, and HOMELAND are up in that category as well, along with THE WALKING DEAD.  And  Peter Dinklage, our once and future Tyrion Lannister, was nominated as Best Actor in a Television Drama.  He will vie for the award against Steve Buscemi (BOARDWALK EMPIRE), Bryan Cranston (BREAKING BAD), Jeff Daniels (THE NEWSROOM), and Kevin Spacey (HOUSE OF CARDS).

The SAG nominations follow close on the heels of AFI's annual announcement, recognizing their ten favorite films and television shows of the previous year.  GAME OF THRONES made the list for the third year in a row.  The AFI recognition is especially nice since it has no winners and no losers; all ten of the chosen films and television shows share the recognition.

Last Day for Pearl Auction

The auctions for Janis Ian's Pearl Foundation fund-raising drive, including those for the items I donated, have entered their final day.

There's some great stuff here, including items by Neil Gaiman, Pat Conroy, Harlan Ellison, Jane Yolen, Ray Bradbury, Orson Scott Card, and many others, and the Pearl Foundation is a terrific cause… so here's a great chance to add some wonderful books to your collection and do good at the same time.

My own donations are a script from GAME OF THRONES, signed by the entire Stark family:

Also, a presentation copy in slipcase of the Subterreanean Press limited edition of A DANCE WITH DRAGON, illustrated by Marc Fishman and signed by both of us:

And finally, a set of hardcovers for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, all five volumes published to date, to be autographed and personalized on request:

So go ye forth and bid!  Bid often!  Bid high!! Come out, come out, you snipers, do your worst, and raise some pearls for Pearl.

Media Access Award

October 22, 2013 at 12:57 pm

Last week I made a quick two-day visit to Los Angeles to attend the 2013 Media Access Awards at the Beverly Hilton, where I was pleased and proud to accept  the 2013 "Visionary Award" on behalf of GAME OF THRONES.

IMG_20131021_115657_967-1

The Media Access Awards honor films and television programs that champion disability as a feature of humanity — and as a component of great storytelling.  In recent years, this industry-wide, multi-guild celebration has spotlighted talents including Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, the casting office of Glee, actor Marlee Matlin, The Sessions writer-director Ben Lewin, and others who have continued to support and encourage the intersection of disability and visibility in media.

David Radcliff, of the Writers With Disabilities Committee of the Writers Guild of America, West, wrote to inform me of this honor, saying, "Game of Thrones seems a natural fit for this recognition. Since its earliest episodes, your gripping series has introduced us to a paralyzed boy with a supernatural gift, has endeared us to a Little Person defined not by his height but by his wit, and has regularly mined the lives of “cripples, bastards, and broken things” to celebrate their strengths and complexities.   In fact, it is a fantastic credit to your work that Game of Thrones is not commonly thought of as a show that “deals with” disability — it is something even better: a show that embraces the reality that no one is easily definable."

The award was presented at a breakfast at the Beverly Hilton.  It was a great event.  Paul Chitlik, an old colleague of mine from my days on THE TWILIGHT ZONE, presented the award to me, and I had the chance to meet some terrific actors, writers, and directors.

For more about the awards, and a full list of this year's honorees, see:

http://mediaaccessawards.com/

This is one I am very proud of… but really, though it may be my name on the award, David Benioff, Dan Weiss, Brian Cogman, our amazing cast and crew, and our incredible directors won this just as much as I did.  Would that all of them could have been there.  And none of this would have possible without the support of HBO.

Thanks, all.

Okay, this is cool:

Not sure what they mean by "George R.R. Martin approved," since I wasn't at the NYC Comicon, and never saw the costume till I came upon this link.  But if I had been there, I certainly WOULD have approved.  Very imaginative.

Golden Dragons From the Shire

September 30, 2013 at 9:19 am

At worldcon this year, Tom Maringer and his bawdy band of coinsmiths debuted three new coins, the first "golden" dragons from Shire Post Mint.

They even did a video about it:

<lj-embed id=”369″ />

These dragon coins bear the likenesses of Jaehaerys I Targaryen (the Old King), the pretender Daemon I Blackfyre, and Joffrey I Baratheon.

(No, silly, they're not made of real gold.  If they were, they would be considerably more expensive.  They look good, though; bright and shiny with a nice heft to them.  And if there is enough demand, Shire Post Mint might even do a short run in real gold for collectors willing to pay the price.)
