C2E2 schedule

I’ve received my schedule for the Chicago Comics Expo next month (see my Appearances page for a link with further details as to date, place, etc.)

I’m coming in to promote the release of the first issue of the FEVRE DREAM comic, scripted by Daniel Abraham (of Albuquerque) and illustrated by Rafa Lopez (of Spain).

Here are the scheduled public functions:

FRIDAY

12 noon – 2pm signing at Avatar booth

4 pm – 6 pm signing at Avatar booth

8pm – 10pm Avatar Friday Night Event – reading from A DANCE WITH DRAGONS
(this item requires a separate admission, available from Avatar)

SATURDAY

11 am – 1pm signing at Avatar booth

3 pm – 6 pm signing at Avatar booth

SUNDAY

11:15 am – 12:15 noon Q&A panel, room E353

1 pm – 4 pm signing at Avatar booth

As you can see, I will be spending a lot of time hanging at the Avatar booth. I expect there will be some “down times” when I’ll be glad to chat… but that depends on the crowds. I have never done this con before, so I don’t know what to expect.

Avatar will have copies of the first issue of FEVRE DREAM for sale at their booth, and I am told they also plan to stock many of my books.

Fond Memories of Spain

One thing I’m really really bad at is writing trip reports. I always have good intentions, especially when headed overseas, but whenever I get back from a long trip I find myself buried in emails, bills, snail mail, deadlines, and other pressing matters, and by the time I dig myself out from under it’s time to get back to work.

I was sorting through some of my photos this evening, however, and I came across some pictures from our visit to Spain in 2008 that brought back some wonderful memories. The Spanish fans were really amazing, and the annual summer literary festival in Gijon, Semana Negra, is like no other event I’ve ever been to. If you ever get a chance to attend, do. Parris and I have been twice now, and I expect we’ll be back again someday.

Meanwhile, although it’s way too late to write a trip report, I thought I would share some of the pictures with you guys.

Here’s a panel from Semana Negra. Me and Scott Bakker and Diego, the most amazing translator.

This was from a party that the Spanish fans threw for me in Gijon. Many of them were in costume. Herewith me and a mass o’ Melisandres.

And here’s Parris with the men of the Night’s Watch:

Some of the men of the Night’s Watch were actually women, of course. (Damn, why didn’t I think to make Jon Snow a really cute girl?)

This one breaks my heart. It’s me with the specially engraved sword that was presented to me by the members of the fan group Asshai.

Alas, this was one of the swords that was stolen when my office was burglarized last year.
Since it’s engraved to me, I actually hoped the cops might be able to recover it, but of course not. If anyone ever sees a sword like this in a flea market or pawn shop… well, it won’t be hard to recognize with the engraving…

There’s lots more fond memories that I don’t have pictures for… but Spain is an amazing place, and we WILL be back one day.

(Portugal was great as well. I’ll post those pictures next).

Coming to Chicago

Now it can be told. I’ll be headed back to Chicago (my old stomping grounds, in my younger days) next month, April 16-18, as a guest of Avatar Press at C2E2, the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo. For more details check out

http://www.avatarpress.com/conventions/c2e2

and the rest of the C2E2 website.

Avatar is bringing me in to help promote the debut of their adaptation of my historical horror novel FEVRE DREAM, due out that month. They’re doing the novel as a ten-issue miniseries, scripted by Daniel Abraham, with art by Rafa Lopez. I’ll be doing the usual round of panels and readings, and also spending a lot of time at the Avatar booth in the dealer’s room, signing copies of the first issue of FEVRE DREAM and whatever else you might want me to sign.

See you there, I hope!

A good Bubonicon. Mike Cassutt gives his GOH speech in a couple minutes. And we had the usual raucous time at the Pope Room last night.

The dog is green. Just sayin’

Bubonicon

Off to our local convention in Albuquerque this weekend. Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood. Bubonicon is a smallish (about 500 people), friendly convention with a decided literary slant. This year the GOH is my old pal Michael Cassutt, a colleague from my TWILIGHT ZONE days and a veteran of the Hollywood wars. Mike is sharp and cynical and always fun to share a beer with, and we’ll be doing some panels together and talking about where the bodies are buried. Also on hand will be toastmaster Carrie Vaughn, a whole phalanx of Wild Carders, S.M. Stirling, Trent Zelazny, Diana Galbaldon, and many other good folks.

My reading is at 5pm tomorrow. Will probably read a chapter from DANCE, haven’t decided which one yet.

Meanwhile, off across the water, casting continues. The latest auditions I have screened were for “Nameless Eunuch” and “Red-Headed Whore.” (Remember, there are no small parts. Red-Headed Whore has a great line). Only one part has been filled since the Secret Seven were announced, but I expect to hear about more castings Real Soon Now.

Clarion 2010

Just a heads up to any aspiring writers reading this… especially those of you who don’t make it a practice to visit the Appearances page on my website.

I will be one of the instructors at the Clarion Workshop in San Diego next summer.

If you don’t know what Clarion is, or do know but would like more information, there’s a website at http://clarion.ucsd.edu/ Right now it still features the info about the 2009 version of the workshop, but they will be updating it for 2010 soon.

Clarion is very competitive, and not everyone who applies will be accepted, but if you’re serious about wanting to write SF and fantasy, give it a shot. It’s a great program, and an astonishing number of professional writers have come out of Clarion and Clarion West over the decades.

I get a regular stream of emails from beginning writers with questions on all aspects of writing and selling their work, most of which I don’t have the time to answer. (Though my website does include a FAQ). Come to Clarion, and you get all those questions (and many more) answered. Though you may not like the answers…

Home Again

Back home again from Montreal. A lot of catching up to do, a lot of stuff to not-blog about. I’ll get to all that later, once I’ve found my desk again beneath this mountain of mail.

It was a C- worldcon, IMNSHO, but I still had a good time, as I usually do at worldcon.

Next year in Melbourne!

At Worldcon

Montreal is a lovely city with many fine restaurants.

The con… well, there have been problems. Major meltdown at the party hotel last night resulted in the hotel management at the Delta descending on the SFWA suite and throwing most of the world’s leading SF and fantasy authors out of their hotel for… wait for it now… talking too loudly. A few of us refused to leave and continued the party in whispers. Here’s to Connie Willis, James Patrick Kelly, John Kessel, and the rest of the small company of Those Who Would Not Be Expelled.

Lots of bad juju at the Delta, which does not seem to have realized that being the party hotel entailed crowded rooms and noise. Hours-long wait for the elevator to the party floor, the 28th. Yes, elevator, singular. They have a whole bank of elevators, but fans were only allowed to use one, the rest being reserved for “real guests.” (The words are the Delta’s).

The BWB party is in the Delta tonight, 28th floor. Here’s hoping we don’t see the same problems.

If Dany has been cast, it is news to me.

Lovely wake for Charlie Brown in the Intercontinental. It doesn’t seem like worldcon without him. If there is an afterlife, I bet he’s found the best party by now.

Worldcon Schedule

I’ve received my preliminary schedule from Anticipation, next month’s Montreal worldcon.

Here’s what it looks like at the moment:

THURSDAY AUG 6
12:30 pm panel: Werewolves of Brigadoon

FRIDAY AUG 7
3:30 pm panel: Writing a Series

SUNDAY AUG 9
12:30 pm panel: Writing for a Living
4:00 pm autographing

MONDAY AUG 10
3:00 pm reading

Aside from these “official” appearances, of course, I will also be doing the usual worldcon stuff — hanging around the hotel bar, hitting the parties at night, attending the Hugo Awards ceremony and the Hugo Losers Party, trying some of this fabled Montreal cuisine. I expect the Brotherhood Without Banners will be throwing one or two of their fabled bashes, and I’ll be at those as well.

See you all in Montreal!

Farewell to Finland

We’re back in Helsinki for one last night. Tomorrow at the crack of dawn (which cracks very very early here in Finland) we’re off again. Parris returns to Ireland, and I head home to the cats, the green chile, and A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. We’ll meet again in Montreal. Ah, the jet set life…

Estonia was great, and Turku was fun as well. I hope to write more about all these places once I’m home.

Thanks for all my Finnish friends, new and old, for making this is a wonderful trip. Finncon rocks.
