Wild Card Artwork Wanted

We’ve added a couple cool new things to the official Wild Cards website.

First off, a new blog post about Superworld, the role-playing game that inspired Wild Cards, from Steve Perrin, who created it.

Also, we’ve added a brand new art gallery at http://www.wildcardsworld.com/art-gallery/

Thing is, there’s no art in the art gallery… yet. That’s where we hope you will come in. We want Wild Cards art! Yes, we’ll be putting up some of the superb cover art and interior illustrations that the books have featured over the decades, but we also hope this page will be a place to showcase some fan art, and maybe discover some new talent.

So if you’ve got that restless urge to draw, and own a paintbrush or a box of colored pencils, we’d love to see what you can do. There’s a link right on the page where you can send your work. Everything that’s appropriate will be posted (please note, we want Wild Cards artwork ONLY, so don’t send us portraits of Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen, or Harry Potter, or Spider-Man, or ANYTHING that is not Wild Cards inspired).

Also, if you look through the author bios and character sketches elsewhere on the site, you’ll note that there are many Wild Cards characters who have NEVER been illustrated. We’ve love to have some thumbnails to add to those entries. We don’t promise to accept anything or everything… but for those who send us something cool enough to make the cut, we have free autographed hardcovers of INSIDE STRAIGHT.

Fly high, aces.

Chesley Nominations

ASFA has announced this year’s nominations for the Chesley Awards.

I was very pleased to see that Magali Villenueve was nominated for her extraordinary and beautiful work on this year’s Ice & Fire calendar.

My congratulations to Magali. She faces some formidable competition, but we’ll be rooting for her. She’s a very talented young artist, and I hope we’ll be seeing a lot more of her work in the years and decades to come.

Also, I see that Richard Anderson is up for best hardcover cover for his cover for my friend Vic Milan’s novel DINOSAUR LORDS. Well deserved. It’s a stunning cover.

FILE 770 has the whole list here:

((I do wish that the Hugo Awards would get rid of the ‘Best Professional Artist’ category, and go with a Best Cover award instead, like the Chesleys. Reward the work, not the person)).

Dragons in the Railyard!

Hiya kids, hiya hiya.

Well, it took a little longer than expected (we had previously announced a September 29 unveiling, which we had to cancel), but work is finally complete on the trompe l’oeil mural I commissioned for the railyard, on the back wall of 418 Montezuma, the building that holds the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

We had a little celebratory party yesterday, along about sunset. Wine, cheese, and dragons. Here’s the big picture:

The mural is the work of JOHN PUGH, one of the world’s leading trompe l’oeil muralists, whose works adorn buildings public and private all over the United States, Canada, and the world. He’s been working on it, off and on, for close on two years now.

I hope you guys all love it as much as I do. Another cool reason to visit Santa Fe, the City Different, where art is everywhere.

Come check out the beasties for yourself the next time you’re in New Mexico… then head around front, see a movie, and have some of our famous buttered popcorn.

The Big Meow

Meow Wolf opened “The House of Eternal Return” with a roar and a bang last week.

We had a “small” (hoo hah) friends and family ‘soft opening’ on Wednesday. On Thursday was the Grand VIP Gala. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the doors opened to the public for the first time. Amanda Palmer, Jason Webley, and the Handsome Family played. Wonders were unveiled, caves and treehouses and haunted mansions and space gates explored, refrigerators opened…

The reviews, I am thrilled to say, were uniformly raves. Here’s a few:

I am told that 5500 hundred people visited the House on its opening weekend. Most of them went away smiling… especially the kids, who loved the place… but there’s plenty there for adults to enjoy as well.

Our hope is that Meow Wolf and the House of Eternal Return will be one of Santa Fe’s premiere attractions for many, many years to come. Come visit when you’re in town. I promise you, you’ve never seen anything quite like it.

This is Minion Raya speaking to share some exciting news on behalf of GRRM.

George is proud to be the first to announce production and progress on the official SONG OF ICE AND FIRE calendar for 2017 which will feature art by the deeply talented Didier Graffet.  Although this year has only just begun we couldn’t wait to share a preview of Didier’s fantastic work for next year’s calendar.

And here it is, the New Cover for 2017.

And this compelling depiction of the Battle of the Blackwater is just the beginning!

Keep an eye out for more announcements and updates about next years calendar.

Fun fact, the piece below we actually have hanging in our office library and also how we first became familiar with Didier’s work.  It was on display at the World Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention during their renowned yearly traveling art show.  No relation to Westeros, just an outstanding painting and a good taste of what's to come.

Links to the rest of Didier’s work to get your imagination flowing.

There are going to be all sorts of astonishing extras, and we expect sellout crowd for that first opening weekend. So if you want to join the fun, reserve your tickets now: https://meowwolf.com/product-category/exhibition-tickets/

Big Ass Robot Invades Santa Fe

Work continues daily on Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return, down at the former Silva Lanes.

And now we have a supervisor on site to make sure no one is goofing off. A towering kick-ass robot has just arrived to take up residence in the parking lot (he’s too big to actually fit inside the building).

The robot — who does not have a name as yet, though we hope to have some announcements about that soon — was designed and built by sculptor Christian Ristow, and made his debut at Burning Man. Yes, he “works.” When powered up, he lifts his arm to sniff that daisy in his hand and also stomps small cars into pancakes. (Not really).

He is going to look especially impressive at sunset, we think. Like here.

Now all we have to do is give him a gigantic bowling ball, so he can bowl down that old Silva Lanes neon bowling pin across the lot.

You can see “Becoming Human” at the former Silva Lanes right now… but please stay back behind the chain link fences. This is an active construction site, and hazards abound.

The House of Eternal Return, long adrift is time and space, is spinning back towards earth and its eventual landing on the south side of Santa Fe… courtesy of the madmen and madwomen of Meow Wolf, the City Different’s wildest artist’s collective.

Remember Silva Lanes? That derelict bowling alley I bought last winter? If not, go back to January and February on this very Not A Blog and read the old posts. Or just Google “Silva Lanes” and my name, and you’ll find plenty of press coverage.

Anyway… work has been proceeding down on the south side ever since. My own construction crew has gutted the remains of the old structure, torn up the parking lot, and has been working day and night to bring everything up to code. Meanwhile, Meow Wolf’s artists have been across the street, making magic… and now they’ve moved in and started the installations. The two construction crews are working side by side.

Here’s some recent press coverage of the project, from the pages of the SANTA FE NEW JIXIOCAN and the ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL.

http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/business/meow-wolf-banks-on-returns-with-ambitious-new-exhibit/article_77ca13b6-b0fa-52a5-8a00-b04dd3857241.html

http://www.abqjournal.com/611525/biz/meow-wolfs-latest-futuristic-project-bends-time-and-space.html

Last week I had a tour of the former Silva Lanes. Some amazing stuff is going on in there. The House of Eternal Return should be interactive art like you’ve never seen it. Kids are going to love this, I think. (A few lucky ones already do).

Here’s some more fun pictures from an email that Meow Wolf CEO Vince Kadlubek sent out last week to investors.

Besides the house itself (think of it as a giant TARDIS in a Victorian mansion), there’s also going to be secret passages, a cave system, a haunted forest, a performance space, a video arcade, a gift shop, a children’s learning center (for art, no longer taught in New Mexico schools), a gallery, artists’ workshops… oh, and a giant robot and steel spider in the parking lot (just visiting, those last two). (And yes, the neon bowling pin remains).

The hope is everything will be ready for a grand opening in JANUARY. Watch this space for further details.

Of course, all this costs money. To raise some more of that, Meow Wolf is offering one thousand (1000) limited edition boxed set Lifetime Pass Memberships. They come with an actual box, which looks very cool. But I will let them tell you about that themselves:

https://meowwolf.com/2015/09/the-meow-wolf-lifetime-pass-limited-edition/

The House of Eternal Return is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before, and we hope it will be a permanent part of the scene here in Santa Fe for decades to come, and a “must see” for every tourist visiting the City Different.

One thing for sure… it will be much more exciting than bowling.
