Paperbacks Are Coming

Yes, it's true.  Your wait is over.  A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will finally be published in paperback, next month.

(Have you guys really been waiting?  Really truly?)

The paperback release has been delayed again and again, I know.  (Believe me, I've received a lot of emails about it).  This was done largely at the request of the bookstores.  The hardcover was still selling strongly (still is, actually), so they wanted the paperback delayed.

But no longer.  On October 29, Bantam Spectra will release DANCE simultaneously in trade and mass market paperback editions.

DWD5

And yes, the paperback will include a preview chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER.  (Though at this point it has been so long that I've forgotten which one it is).

October, by the way, looks to be a huge month for me.  Besides the DANCE paperbacks, I also have OLD MARS coming out that month, and the MEATHOUSE MAN graphic novel, and a little Xmas book called THE WIT AND WISDOM OF TYRION LANNISTER.  But more about that one later.

The Princess and the Queen

The final story in DANGEROUS WOMEN will be my own, a 30,000 word novella entitled "The Princess and the Queen," a history (somewhat abridged) of the Dance of the Dragons, as set down by a maester of the Citadel.

Tor.com has  uploaded a sample to their site.  You can find it here:

http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/07/dangerous-women-george-r-r-martin-excerpt

Enjoy.

(The full 80,000 word account of the Dance will eventually appear in a book, as yet untitled, that we're calling the GRRMarillion).

In Memoriam

For those of you who were not able to come to San Diego for Comicon… or get into Hall H for the GAME OF THRONES panel… here's the video that kicked off the proceedings, a tribute to all those we have loved (or not) and lost during the first three seasons of the show.

<lj-embed id=”354″ />

Seen all together like that, it does make me seem rather a bloody bastard, doesn't it?

In my own (feeble) defense, however, let me point out that Irri, Rakharo, the Thirteen of Qarth, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, Mago (not seen in the video), and Pyat Pree are all still alive and well (more or less) in the books as of the end of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.  Like the guys in Spinal Tap, David and Dan do like to turn things up to 11.

Robb's wife is alive in the novels too, but Jeyne Westerling is an entirely different person than Talisa Maegyr with an entirely different fate.  Ros does not exist in the books, but of the characters she replaced, Kyra is dead, but Chataya and Alayaya are still around.

As to where we go from here… season four is coming, and no one is safe on GAME OF THRONES.

Not even those who you think might be safe for another book or two, from reading my novels.

The Real Iron Throne

July 8, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Yes, I know, that title is a bit of an oxymoron.

There is no real Iron Throne. It doesn't exist. I made it up. I said it was made of melted swords, but really, it was made of words, like all such fictional constructs.

Ah, but it's real to me. That's part of what it means to be a writer. If you don't know what I'm getting at there, go read my old short story, "Portraits of His Children." When I write about the Iron Throne, I SEE it in my head… and I try to describe it as best I can. Not being a blacksmith or an ironmonger, however, I hammer it together with words, striving to make all of you, my readers, see what I see.

Most of the time that works… though, as the recent brouhaha about the Red Viper shows, the picture in the reader's head and the picture in the writer's head do not always line up perfectly. With the Iron Throne, however, the process has been particularly frustrating. A dozen different artists have done versions of the Iron Throne over the years. Some have been very striking, some less so, but none of them have ever been quite RIGHT. Their versions never quite matched what I saw in my mind's eye.

Then came the show, and HBO's version of the Iron Throne.

I'm a realist about these things, and I know perfectly well that for millions of television viewers worldwide, the HBO Iron Throne is THE Iron Throne, and always will be. It turns up everywhere, on book covers, on magazines, in places that have no connection to the show. Say "GAME OF THRONES," and people think of the HBO Iron Throne.

And, hell, in some ways the HBO throne is more real than mine could ever be. They've actually MADE theirs (though it is not actually made of iron). There's the one that sits on the set in Belfast's Paint Hall, and at least six others that travel about the country making promotional appearances at conventions, screenings, exhibits, and the like. They turn up in train stations and parks. Thousands of people have had their pictures taken sitting on the Iron Throne, including many celebrities. And me as well, many times. Over in the UK, Sky Atlantic has their own Iron Throne, that also travels about to help promote the show. Canal + has one too, in Spain. The Spanish and British thrones are variants, somewhat different from the HBO throne, yet similar in most important respects. I've been seated on both of those at well.

The HBO throne has become iconic. And well it might. It's a terrific design, and it has served the show very well. There are replicas and paperweights of it in three different sizes. Everyone knows it. I love it. I have all those replicas right here, sitting on my shelves.

And yet, and yet… it's still not right. It's not the Iron Throne I see when I'm working on THE WINDS OF WINTER. It's not the Iron Throne I want my readers to see. The way the throne is described in the books… HUGE, hulking, black and twisted, with the steep iron stairs in front, the high seat from which the king looks DOWN on everyone in the court… my throne is a hunched beast looming over the throne room, ugly and assymetric…

The HBO throne is none of those things. It's big, yes, but not nearly as big as the one described in the novels. And for good reason. We have a huge throne room set in Belfast, but not nearly huge enough to hold the Iron Throne as I painted it. For that we'd need something much bigger, more like the interior of St. Paul's Cathedral or Westminster Abbey, and no set has that much room. The Book Version of the Iron Throne would not even fit through the doors of the Paint Hall.

So what does the Real Iron Throne look like, you ask? Glad you asked. It looks kind of like this:

Iron_throne_proposal

That's the Iron Throne as painted by the amazing Marc Simonetti (and if you haven't gotten his 2013 Ice & Fire calendar, better hurry, the year's half over) for the upcoming concordance, THE WORLD OF ICE & FIRE. It's a rough, not a final version, so what you see in the book will be more polished. But Marc has come closer here to capturing the Iron Throne as I picture it than any other artist to tackle it. From now on, THIS will be the reference I give to every other artist tackling a throne room scene. This Iron Throne is massive. Ugly. Assymetric. It's a throne made by blacksmiths hammering together half-melted, broken, twisted swords, wrenched from the hands of dead men or yielded up by defeated foes… a symbol of conquest… it has the steps I describe, and the height. From on top, the king dominates the throne room. And there are thousands of swords in it, not just a few.

This Iron Throne is scary. And not at all a comfortable seat, just as Aegon intended.

Look on his works, ye mighty, and despair.

Calendars Are Coming!!

Got some exciting news for those of you out there who still use calendars… ((yes, yes, I know we have this interwebbie thing now, nobody needs to hang paper on their wall any more to know what day it is, calendar sales are way way down, I don’t care, I am a dinosaur and a proud dinosaur and I LOVE calendars, so there))

The 2013 Ice & Fire calendar, with its spectacular artwork by Marc Simonetti, has done very well indeed, thank you. (And I hope all of you remember Marc when it comes time to make your Hugo nominations for Best Professional Artist).

9780345531544

The 2014 Ice & Fire calendar, illustrated by the amazing Gary Gianni, is almost complete. Those of you who were at Chicon may have seen some of Gianni’s paintings at the Brotherhood Without Banners party, since he was kind enough to display half a dozen of them exclusively for the BWB and their guests. He’s working on the twelfth and final painting now, and we expect the calendar to debut at this summer’s San Diego Comicon.

Martin 2014 3

Which means that is time to get cracking on the 2015 Ice & Fire calendar, and we’ve done just that. I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the artwork for the 2015 calendar will be provided by a man who truly needs no introduction, the Hugo-award-winning artist extraordinaire DONATO GIANCOLA.

If you are one of the six or seven people in fandom unfamiliar with Donato and his artwork, I suggest you remedy that lack immediately by paying a visit to his website at www.donatoart.com

Needless to say, I am a huge huge fan of his painting. This will not be Donato’s first visit to Westeros. Years ago, he did a gorgeous painting of Melisandre of Asshai as the cover for the special Westeros issue of DRAGON magazine. Ever since, I have been wanting him to do more… and now at last it seems I’ll get my wish.

Oddly enough, only a week ago or so I was in DC, enjoying the amazing exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite art that has just opened at the National Gallery. Looking over Donato’s on-line gallery with that so fresh in mind, it occurs to me that his own paintings could have fit right in with those of Millais, Hunt, Rossetti, and the other stalwarts of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

My friends at Bantam tell me that Donato is already hard at work, “far into reading the entire series, studiously taking notes, making thumbnails, etc.” I expect we’ll see some gorgeous things from him.

He has some tough acts to follow, of course. But hey, he knew the job was dangerous when he took it. I expect he is equal to the task.

And I must say, I am very pleased and proud with what our annual Ice & Fire calendar has become. Michael Komarck (2009), Ted Namisth (2011), John Picacio (2012), Marc Simonetti (2013), Gary Gianni (2014) and now Donato Giancola… if you love great fantasy art, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Coming in March… a new TV tie-in edition of A GAME OF THRONES for season three.

Game 2013 MTI trade

The new cover will be available on both mass market and trade paperback formats, I believe. Maybe on a hardcover reprint as well, though I am less sure of that. When I know for certain, I will pass along the info here.

FURTHER INFO. Ok, got a clarification. This new artwork will appear on the paperbacks, both mass market and trade. The hardcover will retain its present cover. Also, a repackage of A STORM OF SWORDS is also in the works, and will feature key art from the HBO series. I will post that here when it’s ready.

More on the App

December 3, 2012 at 10:53 am

Since announcing the official Ice & Fire App (see below), we’ve gotten a lot of questions, most of them concerning when and if the app will be made available for Android, and when and if it will be offering for sale in countries other than the US and UK.

I ran these questions past my people at Random House.

There are, alas, no plans at present to produce the app for Android. That is Random House’s call, not mine. (I seldom use a cellphone myself, and don’t know one from the other, so all such calls are made by folks more conversant with the issues involved). It is possible that may change in the future if there is sufficient demand, but please email Random House, not me. If an Android app is made available, you can get the update on www.suvudu.com”

As for availability in other countries, Barnes and Noble only sells apps in the US and UK, so the Nook version is only available in the US and UK.

Below is a list of the countries where the app is available for iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch).

. United States
. Canada
. United Kingdom
. Australia
. Austria
. Belgium
. Bulgaria

. Ireland
. Italy
. Japan
. Latvia
. Lithuania
. Luxembourg
. Malta
. Netherlands
. Poland
. Portugal

The Random House subrights team is currently looking into translation deals for non-English-speaking readers. But there is nothing to announce yet on the translation front. Sorry.

Here’s a great new 54mm release from my friends at Dark Sword Miniatures: a Winterfell set with Jon Snow and Arya Starrk, before time and chance sent them on their separate paths.

The sculpts are from the incomparable Tom Meier.

For more shots of this set, and a lot of other great miniatures in the Ice & Fire range (not to mention the ranges based on the art of Jim Elmore, Keith Parkinson, etc), visit Dark Sword’s own website at http://darkswordminiatures.com/
