Music: “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?”
But I’ve left the Isle of Cedars behind, at least. 1261 pages and counting.

The timeline of this monster is going to drive me mad. I know perfectly well that as soon as DANCE is published, some of you out there are going to attempt to correlate its chronology with that of A FEAST FOR CROWS, fit all the parts together to suggest an appropriate chapter order for a (hypothetical, and largely impossible) combined book, something like what the “Big Feast” might have been, before the split.

Well, good luck with that. I’m glad you’re doing it, not me. With all these characters scattered over my entire world, some chapters that span hours and others many months, various journeys and voyages to account for, not to mention the demands of the dramatic chronology, an entirely different matter than the literal chronology… well, it may well make your head explode. It did mine. The DANCE timeline alone is a bitch and a half.

Just musing aloud here, so don’t anyone get all hysterical… but depending on how long the book comes out, moving some of these finished chapters into WINDS OF WINTER may make sense. Structurally you could make a good case for making DANCE a perfect parallel to FEAST; different cast of characters, but exactly the same time frame, so both books end on the same approximate date. Then WINDS could pick up the action for both sets of characters the following day.

That’s not the way I have been doing it, however. As written, I’ve covered the FEAST time frame in the first 800 pages (manuscript pages, the printed book pages will be different) of DANCE. Everything that follows is post-FEAST, so that’s where some of the cast from the last book start popping up again. Not the most elegant structure, I admit… but given how late this one is, I wanted to resolve at least a few of the cliffhangers from FEAST… (if only to set up the new cliffhangers). So…

These are the kinds of things I grapple with. No comments necessary, really. I am not looking for advice, and in fact I seldom talk about such issues precisely to AVOID unsolicited advice. These sorts of things are best resolved by me and my muse, sometimes assisted by my editors. Just felt like rambling a little.

Anyway, there we are. Back to the grindstone tomorrow.

But today was a good, productive day. Only problem is that the chapter I finished just now is going to require that I go back and rewrite one of the chapters I finished last week. Minor stuff, though. Shouldn’t take more than a day. (Famous last words, I know).

The latest outrage by the TSA.

America is a free country. Except at its airports.

Anyone who thinks this is cool should go back and read their Orwell.

Kudos to this kid, for challenging the TSA in court.

With WARRIORS scheduled for hardcover release on March 16, there are a number of places on the web where readers can get a taste or two of what the book will offer.

Diana Gabaldon has posted an excerpt of her brand new Lord John novella, “The Custom of the Army,” on her website at http://66.147.244.179/~dianagab/excerpts/lj_army.html

Macmillan offers a sample from Cecelia Holland’s Viking tale, “The King of Norway,” on its own site at http://us.macmillan.com/warriors

And of course there’s an excerpt from my new Dunk & Egg novella, “The Mystery Knight,” up at Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist at http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2010/01/exclusive-excerpt-from-george-r-r.html

Coming soon to a bookstore near you.

Spent the day in the rainwood. 1205 pages. More to come.

DANCE has now passed A CLASH OF KINGS to become the second longest volume in the series, though still three hundred pages shorter than the monster that was A STORM WITH SWORDS.

Tomorrow’s the Big Game

I’m sorry the Jets won’t be playing, but hey, it’s still the SuperBowl, so I’ll be watching.

I kinda sorta like both of these teams, so I have no strong rooting interest. I suppose I’ll be pulling for the Saints. New Orleans deserves some good news after all that Katrina and George W. Bush have put them through, the Saints have never won one before, Drew Brees seems a good guy, I liked Jonathan Vilma when he was a Jet and Jeremy Shockey when he was a Giant, and they have that whole underdog thing going for them. When in doubt, root for the underdog.

But I won’t be distraught if the Colts win, as I would be if it were, say, the Cowboys or the Patriots. (If the Cowboys and the Patriots ever meet in the Superbowl, I will need to root for the earth to open and swallow both teams and the stadium). The Colts are a classy team as well, and Peyton is Eli’s big brother, after all. My heart may be pulling for Nawlins, but my head says it will be Indy.

And we’ll have friends over, and there will be beer, and chips and salsa, crab puffs and egg rolls and chicken wings, plus the SuperBowl commercials. Can’t beat that.

Forget Independence Day. SuperBowl Sunday is America’s real national holiday.

SUICIDE KINGS in Albuquerque

February 6, 2010 at 4:34 pm

By popular demand, we’ve scheduled another Albuquerque mass signing for the latest Wild Cards hardcover, SUICIDE KINGS (volume twenty in the overall series, and the third and concluding book of the current triad).

This time we will be at the Barnes & Noble in Coronado Center, on the southwest corner of Menaul and Louisiana NE in Albuquerque. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 20, and will run from 1:30 pm until… well, it says 3:00 here, but really, until we run out of people who want us to deface their books with our illegible scrawls.

On hand, besides yours truly, will be our local Wild Carders Melinda M. Snodgrass, Daniel Abraham, Victor Milan, John Jos. Miller, and Ian Tregillis… whose character Rustbelt is featured there on the cover (he’s the one losing the pith helmet). Caroline Spector will be coming in from Texas to join the festivities, and Carrie Vaughn will be coming down from Colorado. Carrie’s latest, KITTY’S HOUSE OF HORRORS, the seventh volume in her NEW YORK TIMES bestselling Kitty Norville series, will also be out, and copies will be available for signature. I imagine B&N will have INSIDE STRAIGHT and BUSTED FLUSH on hand as well, for them what missed ’em (shame on you), along with lots of other titles, old and new, by the participating authors.

So if you’re in the vicinity of New Mexico on the 20th, drop on by. We’d love to see you.

Snowing Again in Santa Fe…

… which probably means I should be working on another Jon Snow chapter, but I’m not.

Instead I’m floating off the Isle of Cedars, or racing across the sands of Dorne. Warm places, both of them, with nary a flake to be seen. But I’d better not change horses. If I keep on keeping on, I should finish one of those chapters this week. Maybe both.
