Kids Free at the Cocteau

The film we're offering is a classic… a great comedy, and a terrific horror film… ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.

<lj-embed id=”376″ />

If you can't make tomorrow's debut, we'll be showing the film again on Sunday (27th) and Thursday (the 31st) at 2:00 pm.  Children under twelve will be admitted free to those showings as well.

For grown-up fans of Bud and Lou, like me, we've also scheduled an evening showing on Tuesday (29th) at 8:30.  Kids are welcome at that one too, if it's not past their bedtimes, but they have to pay like everyone else.

In honor of Halloween week, we have a full slate of fun monster and horror flicks.  WICKER MAN and ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW have both been held over, we debuted THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS tonight, we have ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW coming up on Halloween night, and we have a special one-time only screening of the original HOUSE OF WAX 3D, starring Vincent Price.  More on that one later.

See you at the movies.

Media Access Award

Last week I made a quick two-day visit to Los Angeles to attend the 2013 Media Access Awards at the Beverly Hilton, where I was pleased and proud to accept  the 2013 "Visionary Award" on behalf of GAME OF THRONES.

IMG_20131021_115657_967-1

The Media Access Awards honor films and television programs that champion disability as a feature of humanity — and as a component of great storytelling.  In recent years, this industry-wide, multi-guild celebration has spotlighted talents including Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, the casting office of Glee, actor Marlee Matlin, The Sessions writer-director Ben Lewin, and others who have continued to support and encourage the intersection of disability and visibility in media.

David Radcliff, of the Writers With Disabilities Committee of the Writers Guild of America, West, wrote to inform me of this honor, saying, "Game of Thrones seems a natural fit for this recognition. Since its earliest episodes, your gripping series has introduced us to a paralyzed boy with a supernatural gift, has endeared us to a Little Person defined not by his height but by his wit, and has regularly mined the lives of “cripples, bastards, and broken things” to celebrate their strengths and complexities.   In fact, it is a fantastic credit to your work that Game of Thrones is not commonly thought of as a show that “deals with” disability — it is something even better: a show that embraces the reality that no one is easily definable."

The award was presented at a breakfast at the Beverly Hilton.  It was a great event.  Paul Chitlik, an old colleague of mine from my days on THE TWILIGHT ZONE, presented the award to me, and I had the chance to meet some terrific actors, writers, and directors.

For more about the awards, and a full list of this year's honorees, see:

http://mediaaccessawards.com/

This is one I am very proud of… but really, though it may be my name on the award, David Benioff, Dan Weiss, Brian Cogman, our amazing cast and crew, and our incredible directors won this just as much as I did.  Would that all of them could have been there.  And none of this would have possible without the support of HBO.

Thanks, all.

Okay, this is cool:

Not sure what they mean by "George R.R. Martin approved," since I wasn't at the NYC Comicon, and never saw the costume till I came upon this link.  But if I had been there, I certainly WOULD have approved.  Very imaginative.

Giants 23, Vikings 7

So the Giants finally won a game.  Yay.

I'm not taking the bag off my head yet, however.  Last night was the worst game I've seen in years.

The G-Men were horrible.  They won because the Vikings were even worse.  The Viking QB Josh Freeman especially.  He had no business being out there.  And sad to say, Eli did not look much better.  Yes, he finally had a game with no INTs… but I saw at least three balls that SHOULD have been INTs, including one that was a sure pick-six, only the Viking DBs dropped them all.  And speaking of drops, what the hell is wrong with Hakeem Nicks?  He dropped everything Eli threw him in the first half, and was only marginally better in the second.

Our running back of the week, Peyton Hillis, was the only bright spot.  Well, him and Victor Cruz, who is always a bright spot.  But even Cruz dropped a ball, on what would have been a nice TD.

Beat the Eagles next week and maybe I will believe Big Blue has woken up.  Until then… this win needs to be taken with a block of salt.

Tonight's the night: Felicia Day's wildly popular webseries THE GUILD begins its four-day marathon at the Jean Cocteau in Santa Fe.

.the-guild-cast-cosplay-felicia-day

We've changed the screening schedule a bit since I first announced this event, downstream.

Seasons one and two will be shown tonight (Monday, Oct 21), starting at 6:20.

Season three is on tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct 22).

Season four will be screened on Wednesday (October 23).

And we wind up on Thursday (October 24) with seasons five and six.

Admission to each show will be ten bucks, same as an ordinary movie.  (The usual discounts apply).  But we're also offering a $30 ticket for all four nights.

Best of all, after each showing, members of the Guild cast will be visiting with us via Skype… from Hollywood, Fantasyland, the Game, or wherever they may be.  Felicia Day herself will be joining us on Thursday.

Jets Win! Jets Win! Jets Win!

Life is magical and filled with joy…

For this night, at least.  The Jets are only 4-3, true, but they beat the Patriots.  Any time we can take down Evil Little Bill and Tom Brady, it's a day for rejoicing.

Our rookie QB has been blowing hot and cold all season, as rookies will.  Today, aside from that one pick six, he was hot.  He looked really sharp, in truth.  And the Jets D just keeps getting better and better.  Whatever you say about Rex, he knows how to build a great D.

Even so, the Jets almost blew it, allowing Brady and the Pats to tie up the game in the final seconds and send it into overtime.  But in OT, the D came up big, and Geno and offense did just enough to get Nick Folk into range for the winning field goal… aided, I must admit, by a personal foul penalty that I am sure has all the Pats fans howling.  I'd be howling too if the teams had been reversed.

It was by no means the worst call of the afternoon, however.  That distinctiion has to be reserved for a totally bogus offensive pass interference call that negated a beautiful long TD bomb from Geno to Stephen Hill.  If that TD has counted, as it should have, there never would have been an overtime.  So I guess it all evened out in the end.

The Pats still lead the AFC East and will likely win it.  The Jets may not even make the playoffs.  As well as they played this week, they could be awful next week.  It has been that kind of up and down season.  But tonight at least gives Gang Green fans another whiff of hope.  Maybe Geno is for real.  That D sure is.

TREND on the Cocteau

New Mexico's TREND magazine has a nice feature on the reborn Jean Cocteau Cinema in this month's issue.

You can check out the article (and some cool pictures) on line at http://issuu.com/trendmagazineglobal/docs/trend_v14-2_web/46

TREND is an architecture and style magazine, so understandably they gave a lot of ink to the architect who designed the original interior when the Collective Fantasy was reborn as the Cocteau in 1984.  That was well deserved.  I do wish, however, that they had also mentioned Jayne Franck, who did the redesign of our cafe area, including a wonderful reimagining of the concessions area with our stunning glass brick candy counter.  Jayne is off studying in Cambridge England just now, but she deserves a hand of applause so loud it could be heard even across oceans.

Still, a nice piece… it's great to know the theatre is still so beloved by the Santa Fe community.

This week, by the way, we are helping to host the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival (along with the Lensic, the CCA, and the Screen), one of Santa Fe's two major film fests.  A great lineup of movies is on offer.  If you're around, come, support the festival, see some movies.

In between the festival entries, we're also running two great fun fantasy/ horror films, one old and one very new: a newly restored and director approved print of the British classic THE WICKER MAN (with Edward Woodward, not Nicholas Cage, thank you), and the movie that the Mouse does not want you to see, ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW.

Here's a taste:
