LOCUS, the premiere SF and fantasy newsletter/ fanzine/ semiprozine/ whatever — an indispensible publication whatever you call it — has just announced the finalists for this year's annual Locus Awards, and I am happy to announce that the list includes a couple nods for me.
"The Princess and the Queen," my 'fake history' novella from DANGEROUS WOMEN, has been nominated as Best Novella.
And OLD MARS, the retro-SF anthology I co-edited by Gardner Dozois, is a finalist for Best Anthology.
Gargoo is competing against himself in the anthology category, since his annual BEST OF THE YEAR is also nominated. Gardner is also nominated as Best Editor (I'm not).
I'm also thrilled by the nominations of a couple of stories we edited. Joe Abercrombie's "Some Desperado" from DANGEROUS WOMEN and Howard Waldrop's "The Dead-Sea-Bottom Scrolls" from OLD MARS are both finalists in Best Short Story.
And while I had nothing to do with it, I'm equally delighted by the nomination of ABADDON'S GATE by my friends Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck as Best Novel. ABADDON'S absence from this year's Hugo ballot is a crime, especially considering some of the stuff that did make that ballot.
Win, lose, or draw, it is an honor just to be nominated.
The full list of nominees can found here:

Bantam has changed the cover for our forthcoming concordance, THE WORLD OF ICE & FIRE, several times.
You've seen a couple of the earlier mockups here and on my website.
Now here's the latest and… I am told… final cover.
How do you like it?
WORLD OF ICE & FIRE will be out in the fall. It is going to be a gorgeous book, a big coffee table volume with lots and lots of stunning artwork, and tons of fake history. We were supposed to provide 50,000 words of text, but… ah… I got carried away.

… to the Jean Cocteau this weekend.
No, no, not the new guy… the ORIGINAL Big, Green, and Scary.

Starting May 9, for a special limited run, we'll be showing the original Japanese version of GODZILLA (aka GOJIRA, aka KING OF THE MONSTERS). Not the Americanized version either, you won't see Perry Mason… er, Raymond Burr… here.
If you haven't seen GODZILLA before, you may be surprised. This is not the camp Godzilla of the later films, when he was hanging out with Rodan and Mothra and battling robot versions of himself. This Godzilla is no one's monster buddy, and the film is much darker than any of the sequels.
In honor of Godzilla coming to the Cocteau, our bar will be offering a special cocktail: the TOKYO STOMP.
See you at the movies.

Sibel Kekilli meets Woody Allen at the Carnegie Deli in NYC.
Sibel looks stunned, and no wonder. That sandwich has defeated me on several occasions
(This was taken last month, after the season four fan screening in Brooklyn).
I am pleased to report that in the end, Sibel was triumphant… though she did require help.
It was a great evening. We have the best cast in television, and Sibel is a big part of that.
(No spoilers in comments, book readers).

The popcorn at the Jean Cocteau is renowned, even on Altair 4.
Robby likes his with extra butter and Parmesan cheese.

We've had quite a week at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.
On Monday, we had Junot Diaz visiting. On Tuesday, a fundraising event for Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham. On Thursday, Anne Perry. And Friday and Saturday, magician David Kwong performing three shows, and introducing and answering questions about NOW YOU SEE ME.
All this PLUS the usual movies. Oh, and great drinks at the bar. The Mystic Kwong was a sight to behold.
It was all very exciting, and enormous fun, but I'm wiped. (Even though my staff and my minions did all the real work).
This week… well, we have some more showings of ALAN PARTRIDGE and NOW YOU SEE ME, and on Wednesday the special screening of BIG SIGNIFICANT THINGS, with Harry Lloyd (see post below). Come Thursday, the SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL takes over our hall for the weekend. Check out their offerings here:

And you should see the stuff we have planned for the rest of May. But more on all that on another rock.

… later that same night.
As previously announced here (see below), John will be coming to the Jean Cocteau to perform his stand-up show I STOLE YOUR DAD, "presenting new observations on subjects including how to dress like a young and relevant person, fax machines and other obsolete technology, marihuana and Downton Abbey, the state songs of Tennessee, the film criticism of Ayn Rand, and how to spend your time when the world did not end like you were certain it would on December 21st of last year."
John's appearance is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Monday, June 2… but though the show is still six weeks away, we've had such a demand for tickets that we're almost sold out. The Cocteau, please recall, has only 125 seats. As of this morning, we had sold 108 tickets. We expect the last few to be gone by week's end.
So it thrills me to announce that John Hodgman has agreed to do a second show for all his fans in Santa Fe. The second show will also be on Monday, June 2, but starting at 9:00 pm. Tickets to the late show will be available from the Cocteau website http://www.jeancocteaucinema.com/ starting today. You can also call the theatre at 505-466-5528 or drop by the box office in person.
If you want to snag one of those last dozen or so tickets to the 7:00pm show, I'd advise you to act ASAP. Meanwhile, for the night owls and those shut out of the early show, we now have the 9:00pm performance. Admission is $20, with discounts for students and seniors.
John Hodgman is an author and performer best known as the “Resident Expert” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, his COMPLETE WORLD KNOWLEDGE trilogy, and for his podcast and New York Times Magazine column, Judge John Hodgman.
See you at the show.
