Here Come Hap & Leonard

Fresh off last night’s terrific COLONY showcase, the Jean Cocteau Cinema is setting up to do it again next Tuesday, when Joe R. Lansdale His Own Self returns to Santa Fe to premiere the pilot episode of his new television series HAP & LEONARD, from Sundance.

Joe is an amazingly prolific author (I hates him, I hates him), turning out wonderful books in a whole range of genres: science fiction, horror, historical, and mystery, just for a start. If you haven’t read his stuff, you don’t know what you’re missing. The Sage of Nachodoches, Texas, he has a unique voice; nothing reads like a Lansdale story.

His Hap & Leonard novels are among my favorites, and it is great to see them coming to the small screen (in your homes) and the big (well, medium sized) one at the JCC. The cast is pretty amazing too: Marc Antony as Hap and Omar as Leonard, how do you beat that? (James Purefoy and Michael K. Williams, for those not up on their HBO series).

Joe will also be signing books, of course. (We have a good selection of autographed Lansdale titles available from the JCC online bookstore right now at http://www.jeancocteaubooks.com/ — but supplies are limited. But have no fear, we will be getting lots more in by Tuesday for Joe to scrawl in, including a bunch of Hap & Leonard novels).

As with all our TV premieres, admission is FREE. You still might want to call ahead to reserve tickets, though, since this one could easily sell out.

See you at the show!

Redcaps at the JCC

The Authority took control at the Jean Cocteau Cinema last night, when Ryan Condal and his team from Legendary, IGN, and USA turned up for a special showcase of USA’s new sf series COLONY. We showed episodes six and seven on our big (well, medium sized) screen, and afterward Ryan and I talked and fielded questions about COLONY, GAME OF THRONES, working in television, development hell, SIXTH GUN, and all manner of other things.

If you missed it, you should be able to find it on line somewhere. I know people were filming us. So… Twitter, Facebook, IGN, Periscope, one of those places. (What do I know about this Interweb thingie? I still tie messages to the legs of ravens).

It was a fun event, and everyone left with a signed COLONY poster and a red cap.

Our drink special… the Redcap, natch… was also pretty righteous. I had one, and I think I am still feeling the effects this morning.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the episodes as well… even though only three people in the crowd had seen the five episodes that preceded the ones we screened. If you haven’t caught COLONY yet, give it a try. Ryan and his team are doing a nice job.

COLONY Is Coming

The small screen comes to the big screen again this week at the Jean Cocteau Cinema, when we present a special one-night-only presentation of the USA Network’s cool new SF series, COLONY.

<lj-embed id=”673″/>

Mark it down. Thursday night, February 18. We will be screening two new episodes of COLONY, to be followed by a question-and-answer with series creator and executive producer RYAN CONDAL. Oh, and I’m told a few lucky members of the audience will be inducted into Homeland Protection and go home with red berets from the show.

And of course we’ll have our famous popcorn and no doubt a special Colony cocktail as well.

EXPANSE Debut

Just a reminder… THE EXPANSE premieres tonight on the SyFy channel.

For those who came in late, this is the big new space series based on a terrific series of novels by James S.A. Corey, who is really my friends Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck in disguise.

I’ve seen the first two episodes, and they’re terrific.

But don’t take my word for it.

<lj-embed id=”641″/>

If you like episode one tonight, you won’t have to wait long for episode two. SyFy plans to broadcast that one tomorrow night. Then you’ll be all caught up on what the fans at the Jean Cocteau Cinema saw December 3 at the Official Red Carpet Premiere (how could you miss it?)

Pinto Vortando says, “This is a very brave show. Pinto will be watching, and you should too.”

P.S> If you like the show, you will like the novels even better. And you can order signed copies of all five from the Jean Cocteau at http://www.jeancocteaubooks.com/

More Hugo Thoughts

Continuing the conversation I began in my Not A Post of November 2…

Last time I talked about some possible nominees for Dramatic Presentation, Long Form. This time I want to focus on Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. In other words, best television episode. (No, not officially, but that’s what it usually comes down to, and let’s ignore the silliness of nominating an Easter Egg or an acceptance speech from the previous year’s Hugos).

I was no fan of the efforts of Puppies to game the Hugo Awards last year. I don’t think I have been shy in my opinions on that subject. But I will give the Puppies this much — their efforts did break the decade-long hold that Dr. Who fandom had on the nominations in this category. I have no problem with episodes of DR. WHO being nominated, and indeed winning, mind you… and the Doctor has won plenty of times in this category over the past decade… but when four of the six finalists are from the same category, that strikes me as way unbalanced and, well, greedy. The Doctor’s fans love their show, I know, but there is a LOT of great SF and fantasy on the tube right now. Nominate DR. WHO, by all means… but leave some room for someone else, please.

(And yes, I would feel the same way if it was four episodes of GAME OF THRONES being nominated every year, rather than four episodes of DR. WHO).

Last year, for the first time in recent memory, we actually had five different series represented on the final ballot. In addition to GAME OF THRONES and DR. WHO, the two shows that had dominated the previous three years, we also had ORPHAN BLACK (the eventual winner), plus episodes of THE FLASH and GRIMM. The Puppies had something to do with that, I can’t deny that. Nonetheless, I do think it was a healthy development. I hope we have five different series represented this year as well… though maybe not the same five.

There’s a lot to choose from, actually. Yes, DR. WHO. No way to keep the Doctor off the ballot. Yes, GAME OF THRONES. I am only human, so I do hope we contend again… I’d favor “Hardhome” myself, but “Mother’s Mercy,” with Cersei’s walk of shame, could be a strong choice as well. ORPHAN BLACK is the defending champion, and should get another nod as well.

THE FLASH? Maybe. But there’s also ARROW and GOTHAM and AGENTS OF SHIELD for the comic book fans out there (I count myself as one of those), and now SUPERGIRL as well.

GRIMM was nominated last year, and is still going strong. And there’s ONCE UPON A TIME as well. That one has never gotten a nod.

However, looking beyond previous nominees, there are lots of shows out there that might be due for a bit of Hugo love. Start with the zombie triad: the very grim WALKING DEAD, the very tongue-in-cheek Z NATION, plus I, ZOMBIE. The undead are well represented.

And for horror fans, there’s also AMERICAN HORROR STORY. A perennial Emmy contender, yet it never seems to get any notice at Hugo time.

I love scary stories myself, count myself a fan of Lovecraft and Poe and Stephen King, so I’ve sampled and enjoyed most of these shows. The one I like better than any of them, though? PENNY DREADFUL. That’s the one I’ll be including on my own Hugo ballot.

I am tempted to mention THE LAST KINGDOM as well… but as much as I love it, it really isn’t eligible. A terrific show, one you should all be watching, but it’s straight historical fiction, with no fantasy elements.

However, I will mention another show that might otherwise be overlooked: OUTLANDER. Yes, it is a historical. Yes, it is a romance. But it is also a science fiction show. TIME TRAVEL, remember? Plus, it’s just flat out terrific. Great production values, first rate writing and directing, and some amazing acting… all three of the leads gave performances worthy of Emmy nods this past year, though the Academy overlooked them. I hope that fandom doesn’t make the same mistake.

Let’s spread the love. Lots of people are doing good work in television right now, and deserve some recognition. Five nominations, five different series, that’s my hope. When the time comes to make your nominations, look beyond the usual suspects.

The day before All Hallows Eve, and the ghoulies and ghosties and werewolves are stirring…

But the zombies are already out, hungry for brains.

Don’t miss tonight’s episode of Z NATION, where I make my undead debut.

(Together with my faithful undead minions Jo and Raya).

Three Cheers For Snod

Wanted to take a moment here to congratulate my old friend, sometimes collarborator, co-editor, and general partner in crime MELINDA M. SNODGRASS on her new gig. Melinda is headed back to LA to head up the writing staff of STAR TREK: RENEGADES, a new fan-funded Trek web series that features Walter Koenig as Chekov. Melinda will be an executive producer.

Of course, Snod is no stranger to Trek. She was one of the writers on NEXT GENERATION, where she scripted, among other episodes, “Measure of a Man,” still widely regarded as one of the best five Trek episodes of all team. She’ll do a great job on this new show, I have no doubt.

You can read all about this on Melinda’s own blog at:
http://melindasnodgrass.com/star-trek-renegades

((I know a lot of you Trek fans out there will be excited about this, and there will doubtless be lots of questions… that’s the place to ask ’em, not here. Thanks.))

Also, here’s the link to the Kickstarter page funding RENEGADES:

Sounds like a fun series. Go get ’em, Weeds.

… but only a few get to come back as the UNDEAD.

But hey, I’m one of them.

For all you Z NATION fans out there, and those who aren’t (yet) too, my long-anticipated guest starring role as a rotting corpse is scheduled for the October 30 episode, “The Collector.”

I hear a rumor that EW will have a clip from the show on line tomorrow.

No doubt Emmys will follow.

Cinemax Orders SKIN TRADE Script

October 13, 2015 at 5:37 pm

I am very excited to announce the Cinemax (HBO’s sister company) has optioned the television rights to “The Skin Trade,” the offbeat “werewolf noir” novella I penned back in the late 80s. The deal is closed, and Cinemax has ordered the pilot script. This being Hollywood, of course, you never know where things will end… but if they like the script, we’ll shoot a pilot, and if they like that, hey, who knows, maybe we’ll get a series on the air.

Which would be very cool. I have always thought there was a TV series (or maybe a feature film) in Willie Flambeaux and Randi Wade. Those of you who know the story of DOORWAYS, my ill-fated ABC pilot from the early 90s, may even recall that it was SKIN TRADE that I was actually trying to sell back in 1991, when I flew out to LA for a round of pitch meetings. So we’re a few decades late…

“The Skin Trade” has had a storied, and complex, publishing history. It was originally written for NIGHT VISION 5, the fifth volume of the prestigious annual horror anthology from the late lamented small press Dark Harvest, where it appeared together with original contributions from Dan Simmons and Stephen King, some stellar company. The novella was very well received, and went on to win that year’s World Fantasy Award.

It was subsequently reprinted several times, most recently (and notably) in an illustrated edition from Capclave, where I was Guest of Honor, with a cover and interior art by the amazing Rick Berry.

There’s also been a comic book miniseries and graphic novel from Avatar. Daniel Abraham did the adaptation and script, while Mike Wolfer provided the art.

More recently, the novella was purchased by Mike the Pike Productions, who played a big part in taking the project to Cinemax. To handle the adaptation, script the pilot, and produce the show (should we get a greenlight), we’ve tapped a terrific talented young scriptwriter named KALINDA VAZQUEZ, whose previous credits include work on PRISON BREAK and ONCE UPON A TIME. That was not an easy choice. Cinemax and my agents set me up for meetings with close to a dozen different Tv writers, many of them very impressive, but Kalinda’s take on the story and the characters blew me away. She loves the story and the world, and really seems to get Willie and Randi, and her pitch to Cinemax was one of the most polished and professional I’ve ever heard. I love her enthusiasm, and look forward to working with her.

(And no, while I would have loved to write the script and run the show myself myself, that was never really in the cards. I have this book to finish. You know the one).

So… THE SKIN TRADE… coming to your TV set, er, eventually. Maybe. Howl for it.
