What’s German for “yadda yadda yadda?”
There’s a brand new interview with me up on the web, for those of you who cannot get enough of hearing me sound off.
Thing is, it’s in German.
I don’t actually speak German, mind you, so the interview was conducted in English, but it was a German interviewer, so the translation/ voiceover is in German, and I’m not sure to what extent my own English answers remain audible. But here it is, for my German fans:

Still Writing

There must be something about the words “dance” and “dragons.”
We all know how long the last novel took. And now I am writing the “sidebar” (hoo hah) about the first Dance of the Dragons, the fratricidal civil war between King Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra, for THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE, and it’s turned into a monster too.
As of today, I have a hundred and three bloody manuscript pages (some VERY bloody) and still no end at hand. I had hoped to finish this one today, but… no, not even close. Lots more to write.
I think there’s some good stuff here, and judging by the reception my reading got at Chicon, most of you seem to like the fake history too. But DAMN, there a lot of it.
Nothing to do but keep doing.

Hescox to Illustrate A CLASH OF KINGS

Cool things are happening at Subterranean Press.
Marc Fishman has delivered all the artwork for the SubPress limited edition of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, and the book should be at the printer soon. Alas, I believe all the copies are spoken for… but those of you who preordered have something to look forward to.
Just last week I scrawled my scrawl on the signature pages for the new SubPress two-volume slipcased limited edition of A GAME OF THRONES, below a lovely Ted Nasmith drawing. Ted has completed all his other outstanding assignments, and turned his full attention to the illustrations for GAME. I’ve been seeing sketches several times a week, and I’m jazzed. I do love illustrated books, and this one promises to be stunning.
And now I am thrilled to be able to announce that Subterranean has secured the talents of RICHARD HESCOX to illustrate their signed, numbered (and lettered), deluxe, slipcased edition of A CLASH OF KINGS.
Those of you who attended the worldcon in Reno will likely remember seeing some of the gorgeous work that Hescox had on display in the art show there (one canvas, the Lamia, now hangs on my wall here in Santa Fe).
Others may know his work from Boskone art shows. Or perhaps you have his book, THE DECEIVING EYE: THE ART OF RICHARD HESCOX. Most of you will have seen his book covers and movie posters over the years.

For those unfamiliar with his work, suffice it to say that Hescox is a veteran SF and fantasy artist and illustrator, and that I’ve loved his stuff for a long time, especially his oil paintings. We’ve already been firing emails back and forth, and Richard is as enthused as I am. I cannot wait to see him bring my world and characters to life.

As usual, the Subterranean CLASH OF KINGS will be limited to 52 lettered and 448 numbered copies, each signed by me and by the artist. Those who purchased the prior SubPress editions will have first dibs, of course, but there are always some dropouts, so it is possible that a few copies will become available to newcomers around publication date.

ICE Now Shipping

Mine turned up a few days ago. If you preordered, you should have yours as well.

Picacio Does Melisandre

With the year running down, we’ll all soon be needing new 2011 calendars to hang on the wall. There’s still time to pick up the official 2011 Ice & Fire calendar, with its gorgeous castle landscapes by Ted Nasmith.
If you can’t find the Nasmith calendar at that kiosk that appears every Christmas at your local mall, check your local bookstore. A few copies may also be available through some of the associated sellers on Amazon, though Amazon itself seems to have sold out.

Meanwhile — not to get too far ahead of ourselves — but work continues apace on next year’s Ice & Fire calendar as well. The artwork on the 2012 calendar will be provided by Hugo-award winning artist and fan favorite John Picacio, and he’s doing some amazing stuff. So I thought I’d whet your appetites by showing you the mockup of the cover that Bantam featured in its latest catalog.
The Picacio calendar will be released next July. This may not actually be the final cover, but it should give you a good taste of the spectacular work that John is doing. He tells me he’s determined to make this calendar the best work he’s ever done.
So… who would you guys like to see do the art for future calendars? Our plan is to feature a different world-class artist every year.
