Coming to the Cocteau

We have a wild week of movies coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema this weekend.  Something old, something new, something sick and twisted and depraved, and Shakespeare.

From the Bard and the Royal Shakespeare Company, we have HENRY IV, Part 1.  Prince Hal, Falstaff, great stuff.

Something new is THE DOUBLE, with Jesse Eisenberg:

<lj-embed id=”452″ />

Something old, the Jane Fonda/ Lee Marvin western comedy classic, CAT BALLOU.  A personal favorite.  Lee Marvin won his Oscar as Best Actor for his double role in the film, and Jane has seldom been lovelier (well, okay, maybe as Barbarella).  Stubby Kaye and Nat King Cole are on hand as well.  Rather than the trailer, here's a look at the scene where Lee Marvin arrives in town:

Our midnight movie (midnight begins at 11pm in Santa Fe) is John Water's notorious PINK FLAMINGOs.  With Divine.  (Not to be confused with Andy Devine).  And no, we will NOT offer special chocolate cupcakes for this one.  Or even pink flamingo cupcakes.

See you at the movies.

Great Times at the Jean Cocteau

We had a great weekend at the Jean Cocteau.  Joe Lansdale was in town, his own self, to host our showings of COLD IN JULY and BUBBA HO-TEP, and sign books as well.  The bar was serving Good Ol' Boys, another one of Nicole's great specialty cocktails.  And on Monday we had Joe's daughter, fast rising country star Kasey Lansdale, entertaining us a great set of songs off her new album.

Couldn't make it?  Damn.  You missed out.

But you still have two more chances to catch COLD IN JULY, tonight and tomorrow, before it goes away.  You should.  A terrific little film, that got rousing ovations at Cannes and Sundance.  You also have two more chances to catch our Danish superhero film ANT BOY, this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon.  And before he left, Joe Lansdale signed lots of copies of his novels, so if you're looking for an autographed Lansdale book, head on down to Montezuma, right beside the railroad tracks.

On Friday, a whole new slate of films debuts.  We have the soccer movie NEXT GOAL WINS, and the drama LULLABY.  And for our midnight movie (starts at 11pm) Friday and Saturday, straight from the 70s, we've got UNHOLY ROLLERS:

See you at the movies.

Antboy Is Coming

So Marvel has dismissed director Edgar Wright from the long-awaited (by me, anyway) ANT-MAN movie he was helming.

Very distressing.  I love Ant-Man (and the Wonderful Wasp).  I am still outraged that they were left out of THE AVENGERS film.  They were founding members of the group, after all.  Which can't be said for their replacements, Hawkeye and Black Widow.

But hey, hey, have no fear.  If you're feeling a serious lack of ant-based superheroics, the Jean Cocteau Cinema is coming to your rescue.  Marvel won't be giving us ANT-MAN until 2015, if ever, but this weekend the Jean Cocteau is debuting the first Danish superhero movie:

ANT-BOY

Come and check it out!  Showtimes on our website.

And we have lots more excitement at the theatre this weeked too.  More about that later.

Godzilla Is Coming..

… to the Jean Cocteau this weekend.

No, no, not the new guy… the ORIGINAL Big, Green, and Scary.

<lj-embed id=”436″ />

Starting May 9, for a special limited run, we'll be showing the original Japanese version of GODZILLA (aka GOJIRA, aka KING OF THE MONSTERS).  Not the Americanized version either, you won't see Perry Mason… er, Raymond Burr… here.

If you haven't seen GODZILLA before, you may be surprised.  This is not the camp Godzilla of the later films, when he was hanging out with Rodan and Mothra and battling robot versions of himself.  This Godzilla is no one's monster buddy, and the film is much darker than any of the sequels.

In honor of Godzilla coming to the Cocteau, our bar will be offering a special cocktail: the TOKYO STOMP.

See you at the movies.

Viserys Targaryen is helping to kick off the Santa Fe Film Festival this year.

The festival proper runs from May 1 – 4, and the Jean Cocteau Cinema will be one of the main venues, along with the CCA's two screens on the other side of town.  But to open the festivities in grand style, we're having a special One Night Only screening of a terrific new road movie on the evening of April 30.

BIG SIGNIFICANT THINGS is the tale of a young man who sets off on a quest across America, in search of adventure, meaning, and… ah… Big Stuff.

<lj-embed id=”430″ />

The film stars HARRY LLOYD, better known to GAME OF THRONES fan as the late great Beggar King, Viserys III, last having molten gold poured over his head by Khal Drogo.

Harry will be on hand personally come Wednesday night, to introduce his new film, meet the fans, and answer your questions… about BIG SIGNIFICANT THINGS, his new TV series MANHATTAN (now filming outside Santa Fe), DOCTOR WHO, GAME OF THRONES, or whatever.  He's really a MUCH nicer guy than Viserys, so do come meet him.

BIG SIGNIFICANT THINGS will be playing ONE NIGHT ONLY at 7pm, Wednesday, April 30.   We will have big drinks and big snacks and we expect a big crowd, so get your tickets early at the Cocteau website:  http://www.jeancocteaucinema.com/

Magic in Santa Fe

Magic returns to Santa Fe at the end of April at the Jean Cocteau Cinema, "Your Hometown Movie Theatre."  (Well, provided Santa Fe is your home town).

On April 25, we will be showing the hit magical heist film, NOW YOU SEE ME, for a week's engagement.

<lj-embed id=”421″ />

But a magical movie is just the beginning.  That weekend we will also be bringing in DAVID KWONG, the magician behind the film, to talk about the movie and its making, and perform  three live shows for us.  As Head Magical Consultant, David worked with the writers to design all the tricks for the film.  He's a double threat, however: puzzles as well as prestidigation are his province, and he also designs crossword puzzles for the NEW YORK TIMES.

<lj-embed id=”422″ />

David will be doing three shows for us: at 6:20 pm on Friday, April 25, and at 2:00 pm and 8:30 pm on Saturday, April 26.

Advance tickets are now on sale from the Cocteau website at http://www.jeancocteaucinema.com/

Come and join us, and prepare to be amazed.

ROBBIE THE ROBOT will be returning to the Jean Cocteau Cinema this weekend, to help us present one of the classic SF films of all time… no, not FORBIDDEN PLANET, we showed that one already (and will be showing it again this summer) — WAR OF THE WORLDS, the great 1953 George Pal version.

<lj-embed id=”417″ />

We also have a new British comedy coming up: ALAN PARTRIDGE: ALPHA PAPA.  "The Comedy of the Year," somebody said.

<lj-embed id=”418″ />

ALAN PARTRIDGE opens on April 18, WAR OF THE WORLDS on April 11.

See you at the movies.

The Bar Is Open!

Hey, you guys missed the fun.

Our bar opening at the Jean Cocteau was a huge success.  In no small part thanks to Ernie Cline (author of the wonderful READY PLAYER ONE), who turned up with his time machine… ah.. customized DeLorean.  And our own Doc Brown… ah… Jules.

Take a look.  (Photos by Tara Gibbens)

Miss it?  Don't worry.   Doc Brown will be bringing his DeLorean back in a few weeks… for BACK TO THE FUTURE 2.

(Oh, and our Flux Capacitor Cocktail was a big hit too).

Grand Opening

[

The bar at the Jean Cocteau has been serving beer and wine and a few mixed drinks for most of the past month, but all the while construction was still going on during the days, as the last few finishing touches were done.  But now the work is finished, and next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we are having our official

                                                                                GRAND OPENING

We'll be having free movies all three days, from opening to close.  The Tuesday matinee will be CHARADE, with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.  On Wednesday, it's ONE-EYED JACKS with Marlon Brando.  On Thursday, Abbott & Costello in JACK AND THE BEANSTALK.  We're running late shows all three days as well, starting at 11:00 pm:  SPIDER BABY on Tuesday, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE on Wednesday, and THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE on Thursday.  And in between, all three days, we'll be screening BACK TO THE FUTURE at 6:10 and 8:30.

BAR POSTCARD3

Oh, we'll be showing assorted cartoons and short subjects as well.  (And of course, lots of trailers).  And we will be offering a special drink, the Flux Capacitor, along with four kinds of draft beer, wine, beer, the best popcorn in New Mexico, pizza, candy, all the usual.

And that's not even the coolest part.  The coolest part is that we will have Doc Brown's TIME MACHINE with us as well!  Yes, complete with the real flux capacitor, though as I recall this one doesn't have a Mr. Fusion yet.  It will be tooling around Santa Fe starting on Tuesday morning, and during show times you will find it right in front of the theatre (assuming our parking permit comes through).  Oh, and we'll have our own Doc Brown to explain its workings to you.

And on Wednesday (ONE DAY ONLY) we will have the DeLorean's owner, Ernie Cline, on hand as well… showing off the car, and signing copies of his novel READY PLAYER ONE.

The DeLorean will be hard to top, admittedly… but we hope our new bar will be a star attraction as well.  Even if you don't have time for a movie, drop by and see it, we hope you'll think it is as cool as we do.  Remember, no charge for admission.  For those three days only, all movies are FREE.

The Prince of Chaos is Coming…

February 6, 2014 at 2:11 pm
Profile Pic

 … to the Jean Cocteau.

And no, I don't mean the Roger Zelazny novel, I mean the one by Horatio King.  Who is me.  Sort of.  But not really.

poccover

This PRINCE OF CHAOS is a fictional fantasy novel by a fictional author who is not me (not at all, no sir, definitely not), as seen in THE CALLBACK QUEEN, a new romantic comedy out of Ireland that debuts tomorrow at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

The Callback Queen Poster for Jean Cocteau

How this came about?  Well…

Hundred of actors auditioned for roles both large and small in HBO’s Only a handful were cast. Thousands more tried to get auditions, but were never given the chance to read. In the old days, aspiring stars sent off resumes and 8×10 glossies to directors, producers, and casting directors. They still do that. . . but these days some also upload their own auditions on YouTube, Vimeo, and similar sites on the internet.

Amy-Joyce Hastings was one of those, as I discovered one day when dozens of my fans and readers began to send me emails with links to a reading by a lovely young red-haired Irish actress that I’d never heard of. They liked what she’d done, and so did I, when curiosity drove me to click on one of those links and take a look. So I dropped her a note, told her the name of our casting director, wished her luck. . . and thought no more of it, until I heard about The Callback Queen.

Amy-Joyce never got to audition for GAME OF THRONES. That’s something she has in common with thousands of other actors from all over the world. Unlike all the others, however, Amy-Joyce took life’s lemons and made lemonade; she shared her experiences with her friend Graham Cantwell, an Irish filmmaker, who took her tale about a young actress attempting to land a role in an epic fantasy, and turned it into a movie… a romantic comedy about moviemakers and aspiring actors that pokes fun at the whole casting carousel… starring Amy-Joyce Hastings.

<lj-embed id=”402″ />

So now the tale comes full circle.  We're delighted to be able to present the North American Premiere of THE CALLBACK QUEEN right here in Santa Fe, tomorrow evening.  Amy-Joyce Hastings and writer-director Graham Cantwell are flying in from Ireland for the event, and will introduce the film and answer questions afterwards, and we'll also be having a small post-screening reception at the Cocteau's new bar, where you can meet Graham and Amy-Joyce and sample a "Call Me For Comfort," our special CALLBACK QUEEN cocktail.

So see you there.  But don't ask me to sign your copy of PRINCE OF CHAOS.  I am not Horatio King.  (They never even asked me to audition for the role).

((THE CALLBACK QUEEN will be playing for four days only, February 7 – 11.))

P.S.  And yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, the role of the director in THE CALLBACK QUEEN is being played by Mero, the Titan's Bastard.  Someone must have sewed his head back on after Daario hacked it off.  It's a small world, it is, be it Hollywood or Westeros.
