STAY ON TOPIC!

Okay, I am getting swamped with comments on all my Hugo/ Puppygate postings. So many that I may having trouble keeping up… which is not helped by the way LJ makes it impossible to see the content of a comment on a comment without expanding it, so I don’t know what is screened or unscreened.

I thank everyone who has posted. There has been a lot of support, a lot of dissent, a lot of good discussion. The vast majority of you have kept your posts respectful and civil, even when you took issue with something I said, or with another poster. I appreciate that. I have only had to delete a handful of abusive posts.

However, I am going to delete a lot more, starting now. For a different reason. Too many posts are wandering off topic.

Each of my posts is focused on a specific aspect of the Hugo/ Sad Puppy controversy, and that’s what the comments should address.

I do not want to have to deal with long (or short) posts about GamerGate, the Tea Party, affirmative action, the Constitution, rape on campus, or any of the other myriad issues that people are beginning to drag into this. All topics worthy of discussion, to be sure, and maybe we will discuss them at some point… but not now, please.

Stick to the Puppies. Stick to the Hugos. Agree or disagree, engage with the points I am trying to make with each of the main posts.

[Comments closed on this one. I am still trying to moderate all the comments on the previous posts].

Puppygate

The last thing I want to do… the last thing I need to do… is get involved in the firestorm of controversy that has sprung up around this year’s Hugo ballot. I have books to write. I have TV shows to develop. I have anthologies to edit. Oh, and a movie theatre, and a bowling alley and prep school that we are turning into art space, and charities to help support. And somewhere in there, an actual life to live.

Besides, this is a nasty, nasty fight, and anyone who speaks up, on either side of this, risks being savaged. It is no fun being savaged. It raises one’s blood pressure, and brings out the urge to savage back.

A wiser man would probably just keep quiet, and let this storm pass him by.

But no… that’s the path of cowardice. Much as I do not relish what is to come, I have been a part of science fiction fandom most of my life, and the Hugo Awards and worldcon are very important to me, and I cannot and will not stand by and keep silent while they are under attack.

So I am going to say a few things.

Some of you reading this will not like what I am going to say. I expect I will get the usual rash of “I am never reading your books again” emails and posts. Fine, go ahead, I am used to those. They come in every time I say anything of substance.

I suspect I may get those sorts of emails from both sides of the Puppygate wars. I have my own views on all of this, and they don’t line up precisely what what either camp is saying.

So be it. My views are my views. I do not speak for any clique or slate or movement.

I have been thinking about all this for days, since rumors first began to circulate that this year’s Hugo slate might be problematic. I have a number of points I want to make. Rather than write one long long long rambling post touching on all of them, I am going to make a series of posts, each focusing on one specific aspect of the controversy. Although I am going to close comments on this initial introductory post, I will allow comments on the posts that follow… but I will NOT allow abuse in any form, either of me or any other commentator, and I will expect those commenting to STAY ON TOPIC. Dissent is fine, so long as it is courteous and reasoned, but address your comments to the points I am raising, not to side issues.

If you want be abusive, hey, there are plenty of other places on the internet for that. The Sad Puppies websites will allow you to abuse the people they are calling “Social Justice Warriors” all you like, and the sites of those who oppose the Puppies will allow unlimited abuse in the other direction, it seems. But none of that will fly here.

By this time, I know, many of my readers are going to be asking, “What the hell is he talking about? What sides? What controversy? What’s a Sad Puppy? What’s a Hugo Award?”

I am not going to attempt my own summary. Millions of words have already been written about this. SALON is covering the story. So is ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, and the TELEGRAPH in the UK. Other mainstream news blogs will be picking it up soon. Within our genre, fuller accounts can be found on io9 and FILE 770. If you want to hear directly from the major players in this drama, you can check out the websites of writers Brad Torgesen and Larry Correia (MONSTER HUNTER NATION) for the Sad Puppy side, or MAKING LIGHT and TOR.COM site for those opposed to them. Be prepared for lots of vitriol on all those sites, especially when you get to the comments.

And for those who do not have the appetite to wage through thousands of posts, well, the basics are simple. A group of writers and fans, many of them of a conservative political and/or literary bent, felt that they were not being adequately represented in the Hugo Awards, and put together their own slate of stories and writers they wanted on the ballot. They blogged, they organized, they got out their voters, and they were wildly successful… to the extent that this year’s Hugo ballot is dominated by their choices.

Call it block voting. Call it ballot stuffing. Call it gaming the system. There’s truth to all of those characterizations.

You can’t call it cheating, though. It was all within the rules.

But many things can be legal, and still bad… and this is one of those, from where I sit.

I think the Sad Puppies have broken the Hugo Awards, and I am not sure they can ever be repaired.

I will expand on that, and explain why, in the posts that follow.

Hugo Nominations!

The Hugo nominations for 2014 have just been announced as Eastercon in the UK, and other conventions around the world.  You can find the full list here:

http://loncon3.org/2014hugos.php

GAME OF THRONES has been nominated in Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form this year, for "The Rains of Castamere," the infamous Red Wedding episode, scripted by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and directed by David Nutter.  Congratulations, all.  The nomination is just the latest confirmation that David, Dan, T'Other David, Richard Madden, Oona Chaplin, Michelle Fairley, and the rest of our cast and crew did an amazing job on this one, creating a moment that will live in the annals of television for a long, long time.  No novelist has ever been more fortunate in the people who came forward to translate his work from the page to the screen.

I would love nothing better than to have David, Dan, David, Bryan, and a whole contingent of our cast drop by this year's Hugo Awards.  London is not that far from Belfast, after all.  Whether that will happen or not, I cannot say, but I'll do my best.  It would be great to have them all at worldcon.

(Mind you, however, I think the odds of GAME OF THRONES actually winning this year are remote.  "The Rains of Castamere" is up against an episode of ORPHAN BLACK, and four (4!!!) episodes of DOCTOR WHO, which has dominated Short Form since the category was created.  Last year, in San Antonio, "Blackwater" broke DOCTOR WHO's long streak of victories, but I suspect that only served to rouse the Whovians, and this year the con is on their home ground in the UK, where they are legion.  So GOT is a long shot at best, but hey… it IS an honor just to be nominated).

Speaking of which… I am REALLY jazzed to be able to reveal, at last, that Jet City's MEATHOUSE MAN has also been nominated, in the Graphic Novel category.   MM the graphic novel is the work of the amazing and talented Raya Golden, my sometime assistant and all-around minion, and long-time friend and quasi-goddaughter, based on a novelette that I originally wrote for Harlan Ellison's THE LAST DANGEROUS VISIONS back in the dawn of time (well, mid-70s) and eventually published in Damon Knight's anthology ORBIT 18.  Written at one of the lowest points of my life, the novelette "Meathouse Man" is probably the darkest and most twisted thing I've ever written, a story so personally painful to me that I can hardly stand to re-read it even now… that Raya chose this tale, out of all my stories, to adapt and illustrate as a graphic novel, producing a work capable of earning a Hugo nomination… well, that's just bloody incredible, and a real testament to her dedication, her talent, and her madness.  Bravo!

And that's my Hugo news.

As for the rest of the ballot… well, the good news is, more people nominated this year than ever before.

And the bad news… well, you guys are smart, you can figure that out for yourself.  And if you can't, there a hundred blogs that will tell you.  I expect it will only be a matter of hours before someone starts talking about "Hugofail."  Prepare for the internet to go to war again.

I will leave that to others.  I am just thrilled for David and Dan and David, for HBO, and most of all for Raya.  (FWIW, a couple years back, James S.A. Corey was nominated for Best Novel [should have been nominated again this year, actually], and James S.A. Corey is half Ty Franck, who was my assistant at the time.  And now Raya is nominated.  I think I may be the first writer to have two assistants to be nominated for the Hug.  Cool).

Podcast Honored

A somewhat belated congratulations to Kyle, Mimi, Ashley, Amin, and the many other co-hosts, guests, and visitors at A Podcast of Ice and Fire, who just won the "Geekie Award" for Best Podcast.

<lj-embed id=”365″ />

I've never actually met the folks from the Podcast of Ice & Fire… well, most of them, anyway, I may have run into one or two on book tours… but I have listened to them from time to time, and they seem to have a lot of fun.  They are not always right, but they are [almost] always interesting, and worth the listen.  So give them a try, if you're a fan of podcasts.  You can find them at http://podcastoficeandfire.com/ talking about the show, the books, and… for reasons I am not entirely clear on… House Manwoody.

Congrats on the honor, guys.  Take a bow.

For those of you who couldn’t make it to Texas for Aggiecon and Deeper Than Swords last month, the good folks at Texas A&M and the Cushing Memorial Library have thoughtfully videotaped my speech and uploaded it to YouTube.

So if you’d like to hear more about how a Jersey boy came to deposit his papers and manuscripts in College Station, you can hear all about my strange connection to Texas here:

This has nothing to do with my own work (well, aside from kindling my love of fantasy in the first place), but as a huge Tolkien fanboy, I can’t help but sharing this for the six or seven of you who may not have stumbled on it yet.

Bilbo! Gandalf! Dwarfs! (No dragons till next picture, though).

Hot damn! Can’t wait!

A Blast from the Past

/>Music: Those Were The Days
I was startled looking at my website today when I saw the hit counter, which tells me the site has had more than 23 million hits since December of 2000.

Of course, I have to put that in perspective. It’s really just the same forty-two people coming back again and again to see if DANCE is done yet, isn’t it?

(I suspect the Not A Blog actually gets MORE visitors than my main site. A mention here — of a forthcoming appearance, a book sale, a news item — seems to generate a lot more response than anything on my Appearances page, my Signed Books page, or my News page).

No point to any of this, just… hey, 23 million hits, that’s kinda cool…

No telling how many of you have actually been around since 2000, and how many found my site and/or the Not A Blog just last week. Some of you newcomers, though, might enjoy giving a listen to the series of podcasts I recorded back in 2005, to promote A FEAST FOR CROWS. (I assume you old timers have heard them all already). They’re all at

http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheGeorgeRRMartinPodcast

I imagine I will be doing more of these when DANCE WITH DRAGONS comes out. I’ll need to think up some more topics. (Maybe “Deadlines, and Why They Should Never Be Missed” would be a good one). Meanwhile, these may entertain and enlighten those of you who haven’t heard ’em.

And try not to laugh TOO hard at the part where I say I hope to finish DANCE by the end of the year. I really meant it, honest.

But Enough About the Hugos

Moving right along, I wanted to mention that all my copies of the Guardians of Order RPG book are now gone, including the remaining copies that were water-damaged in the floor.

It’s possible that I may have a box or two of additional copies in my storage locker, but I won’t know that until work is complete on my Library Tower, and I can empty out the locker and start unpacking long-lost books.

Thanks for the interest, everyone. I hope those of you who got the books enjoy ’em.
