SubPress Shipping Limited Editions

Subterranean Press is now shipping its deluxe limited editions of both FEVRE DREAM and HUNTER’S RUN, for those who love fine books. These are gorgeous editions, and extensively illustrated. Justin Sweet did the art of FEVRE DREAM, Bob Eggleton on HUNTER’S RUN. Yum yum.

We will be running a more extensive story about this on my website news page, but I wanted to drop a quick mention here in case any of you want to hop over to Subterranean and snag a copy before they’re all gone. Bill Schafer tells me that only 75 copies remain unsold of the FEVRE DREAM print run, so if you want one, don’t hesitate too long.

(I love illustrated books. All books should be illustrated).

The Subpress site is at http://www.subterraneanpress.com/

Polls Close Tuesday

Just wanted to let everyone know that we will be closing the miniatures balloting on Tuesday. That will be one full week, enough time for everyone to vote.

Barring a flood of new votes in the last few days, it looks as though the winners will be Tyrion (overwhelmingly), Robb, Brienne, and the Red Viper. Prince Oberyn leads the current fifth-place candidate, Asha Greyjoy, by over a hundred votes, and the margin is widening.

I’ve never done one of these before, and I must say, I am finding the results fascinating. So are my friends at Dark Sword. Interestingly enough, on Dark Sword’s other main lines — the ranges based on the artwork of Larry Elmore and Keith Parkinson — the hot babes in chainmail bikinis regularly outsell all other miniatures. No woman in Westeros would be caught dead in a chainmail bikini, of course (well, actually, if a real woman warrior ever wore one of these things, she WOULD be found dead, and very quickly), but we still made sure to include several hot babes in our own list of choices.

Well, Asha Greyjoy is doing well enough, and will finish just out of the money, looks like… but Shae and Arianne Martell are both bringing up the rear, running behind even Prince Joffrey at this juncture. Instead my readers want a dwarf, a bisexual Dornishman, and the homeliest woman in the Seven Kingdoms. Okay.

So what does that mean? Are my readers less horny than Elmore and Parkinson fans? Do they have something against scantily clad women? Is it my large female readership weighing in against sexist stereotypes in fantasy? Is it more just a reflection on the specific characters (Asha’s strong showing would suggest that)?

Interesting to speculate, anyway…

The characters who don’t make the cut this time will have another shot somewhere down the line, have no fear. So long as you guys keep buying these, Dark Sword will keep making more, and we hope to get to everyone eventually.

My thanks to all of you who voted. The turnout has been astonishing.

Dark Sword Miniatures

The first wave of Ice and Fire figures from Dark Sword Miniatures have been very well received, I am pleased to report. If you missed those, you can check them out on Dark Sword’s own website at http://darkswordminiatures.com/

Here’s a couple of painted versions that I thought were especially stunning — the Lannister twins, with Cersei in red and Jaime in his Kingsguard whites, rendered by the talented brush of Marike Reimer. Beautiful work, I think. The way she does face is amazing. (I paint minis myself from time to time for relaxation, but at this scale, I count it a success if both eyes don’t end up on the same side of the nose).

With the first wave of minis meeting such a great reception, Dark Sword and Tom Meier are gearing up for wave # 2. Once again the set will consist of ten figures: six named characters from A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, and four “types,” spearcarriers or soldiers of one faction or another, intended to fill out the ranks.

Two of the “named character” slots have already been filled. Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, and Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain That Rides, will both be part of the next release. As for the four remaining figures… that’s where you guys come in. We’re going to do a poll. We’ll give you ten options, and the top four finishers will be part of Dark Sword’s “second wave.”

But more on that next post.

Lord Pat of the Hot List is doing it again, aided and abetted by Bill Schafer and the good folks at Subterranean Press.

Pat is running another one of his infamous contests, this one for a copy of the signed, numbered limited edition of my historical horror novel, FEVRE DREAM. Like all the books SubPress puts out, this will be a gorgeous example of the bookmaker’s art, and it’s lavishly illustrated by Justin Sweet, who has painted the cover and three more full color plates and done a bunch of gorgeous pen and inks for the interior as well. Abner and Joshua have never looked so good.

To win your free copy of FEVRE DREAM, head on over to Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist at

http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2008/02/win-copy-of-limited-edition-of-george-r.html

And if you’d rather not take your chances with a contest and would rather just buy yourself a copy of the book, you can do that at Subterranean’s website:

And remember, always keep your steam up.

… where are my football games?

Damn. Even after a SuperBowl victory, the end of the NFL season always leaves you feeling empty. (And no, I don’t count the Pro Bowl as a real football game).

Well, the Draft’s not too far off.

Meanwhile, it’s back to working seven days a week, I guess.

Name That Catch

The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS is sponsoring a contest to come up with an appropriate name for the Manning to Tyree play:

Can’t say I’m in love with any of the suggestions so far, most of which strike me as too labored, but there’s still time left, maybe something will emerge.

Page One Signing

What with all the thrills and chills on SuperBowl Sunday, I never got around to posting about the previous day’s excitement, the big INSIDE STRAIGHT launch party and autographing at Page One Bookstore in Albuquerque.

The signing was a huge success. Seven of the nine contributors to INSIDE STRAIGHT were on hand to autograph copies of the book; Caroline Spector flew in from Texas and Carrie Vaughn drove down from Colorado, and Melinda Snodgrass, John Jos. Miller, Daniel Abraham, Ian Tregillis, and I were there representing for New Mexico. A number of other Wild Cards writers also turned up to cheer us on, and join us for a reception afterward, so sharp-eyed collectors could also snag signatures from Victor Milan, Walter Jon Williams, Gail Gerstner Miller, Sage Walker, and Laura J. Mixon.

And the fans turned out in droves. They filled up all the seats pretty quickly, and after that it was standing room only. The autograph line went on and on, winding back through the cafe and into the stacks. I think it was the biggest signing I’ve ever had in New Mexico, even larger than the turnout we got for A FEAST FOR CROWS.

For those of you who were not able to attend the event, we did sign some stock for Page One, and while that stock lasts you should still be able to get a copy signed by me and six of my writers by ordering via the Page One website at http://www.page1book.com/

Our thanks to the good folks at Page One, to our editor Patrick Nielsen Hayden and our ace agent Kay McCauley, and to all the readers who turned out to make the event such a success.

This motley crew of hedge knights and vagabonds are somewhere on the Mother Road, moving toward Arizona and the Big Hole in Da Ground.

Beware, beware, they’re armed and dangerous.
