Summer Wins Through

Summer Wins Through
From southern California comes this email from Genevieve H, a vet tech assistant, who writes, "I... get to help many animals in need, but when the local shelter brought in this little abandoned girl pup I couldn't resist taking her home. She was found with two of her littler mates abandoned at a local plant nursery. The workers took her brothers home- but they didn't want her because she was hurt. After we cleaned off all the blood and shaved some of the fur away we saw what had happened: coyotes. They must have got some of her other siblings but were scared off in the middle of grabbing her.The shelter accepted her from the workers, but didn't really have room or anyone to care for her wounds. I have an older dog at home that is lonely for his own kind, so I gladly offered to take her home.. . .So, naturally, I started think of names from the story to call her. I tried several: Nymeria, Arya, Tully (she's a red head), but when I said Summer she looked right at me with a look in her eye like, "Yeah? I can't believe it took you THAT long to figure out my name- sheesh."

She's not going to be a huge dog since she's most likely a cattle dog/Aussie Shep mix. However, she DID live through a coyote attack at only 8 weeks of age (and is proving to be quite the little rascal). So while her size may not be that of a direwolf, her spirit is another story... She looks a little like a Frankenstein dog right now, but those are just drains and staples in and on the bites. She'll get them out soon enough and her pretty fur will grow back."

Thanks for the rescue, Genevieve, and for the work you do. Here's hoping that Summer has fully recovered from the coyote attack by now, and that you and she enjoy many happy years together.
