{"id":8132,"date":"2023-04-02T08:47:58","date_gmt":"2023-04-02T14:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=8132"},"modified":"2023-04-01T11:48:25","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T17:48:25","slug":"hugo-nominations-open-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2023\/04\/02\/hugo-nominations-open-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Hugo Nominations Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s World Science Fiction Convention (the 81st) is happening in Chengdu, China, from October 18-22.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s later than usual.\u00a0\u00a0 Nominations for the Hugo Awards opened later as well, but they <strong>DID<\/strong> open on March 1.\u00a0 They will close April 30, so you have a month and change left to nominate your favorite books, stories, fanzines, writers, TV shows, and movies from last year.\u00a0\u00a0 That is, assuming you hold a membership in the Chengdu worldcon.\u00a0\u00a0 Both attending and supporting members are eligible to nominate, so you don&#8217;t actually need to be planning on a trip to China to take part.<\/p>\n<p>If you are eligible to nominate, I urge you to do so.\u00a0\u00a0 The Hugo Awards are our field&#8217;s oldest and most prestigious awards&#8230; and they are a <em>FAN<\/em> award, given by readers and viewers, not by a jury.\u00a0\u00a0 It is a huge honor to win one&#8230; and a proud and noble thing to lose one too.\u00a0\u00a0 I speak from experience.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve won a few, and lost a lot more, even helped found the Hugo Losers Party with the late great Gardner Dozois.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a few years since I last did one of these &#8220;eligibility posts&#8221; that have become so common in the past decade or so.\u00a0\u00a0 In large part, that&#8217;s because I did not put out anything that was eligible&#8230; aside from various Wild Cards stories and books, which qualified me in the &#8220;Editor &#8211; Short Form&#8221; category.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s true for 2022 as well.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 FULL HOUSE, a hardcover collection of Wild Cards stories from Tor.com, came out in mid-year, and a number of older volumes in the series were reprinted in trade paperback and mass market.\u00a0\u00a0 We also released the American edition of THREE KINGS, a Wild Cards mosaic novel edited by Melinda M. for FREE &#8212; at the links above.<\/p>\n<p>Editing was not all I did in 2022.\u00a0\u00a0 I also did some work in television as an executive producer and co-creator of a new series on HBO.\u00a0\u00a0 You may have heard of it.\u00a0\u00a0 It was called <em>HOUSE OF THE DRAGON.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7814\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/house-of-the-dragon-button-02-1645217002655.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"1020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/house-of-the-dragon-button-02-1645217002655.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/house-of-the-dragon-button-02-1645217002655-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/house-of-the-dragon-button-02-1645217002655-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/house-of-the-dragon-button-02-1645217002655-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The series debuted in August and ran until late October, making it eligible for nomination in either of the two Dramatic Presentation categories in the Hugo Awards.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Either&#8230; but not both.\u00a0\u00a0 The rules there are a little complex.\u00a0\u00a0 Fans can nominate the show in both Short Form and Long Form, but it won&#8217;t appear on the ballot in both categories; if a series gets enough votes in both categories, one has to make a choice.\u00a0\u00a0 (This happened to <em>GAME OF THRONES<\/em> twice, as it happens).<\/p>\n<p>The entire first season &#8212; ten episodes, each approximately one hour long &#8212; can be nominated in Long Form, where it will compete against the year&#8217;s biggest movies (or possibly seasons of other TV shows).\u00a0\u00a0 The first season of <em>GAME OF THRONES<\/em> was nominated in Long Form.<\/p>\n<p>The usual category for television shows is Short Form, however; there it is <em>individual episodes<\/em> that are nominated, not entire seasons or the show as a whole.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It helps to know the titles of the episodes if you want to nominate your favorites.<\/p>\n<p>Here the first season episodes of <em>HOUSE OF THE DRAGON<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>101\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Heirs of the Dragon<br \/>\n102\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Rogue Prince<br \/>\n103\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Second of His Name<br \/>\n104\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 King of the Narrow Sea<br \/>\n105\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We Light the Way<br \/>\n106\u00a0\u00a0 The Princess and the Queen<br \/>\n107\u00a0\u00a0 Driftmark<br \/>\n108\u00a0 The Lord of the Tides<br \/>\n109\u00a0 The Green Council<br \/>\n110\u00a0 The Black Queen<\/p>\n<p>You can nominate as many episodes of a series as you like&#8230; but these days, only three will make the ballot.\u00a0\u00a0 (In decades past, there were years when a popular series would completely fill the ballot, but that&#8217;s not allowed any longer).\u00a0\u00a0 All the listed episodes were first televised in 2022, so they are all eligible.<\/p>\n<p><em>HOUSE OF THE DRAGON<\/em> was adapted from portions of <em>FIRE &amp; BLOOD<\/em>, Archmaester Gyldayn&#8217;s history of the Targaryen dynasty from Aegon&#8217;s Conquest to the regency of Aegon III. \u00a0\u00a0 Unlike the various volumes of <em>A SONG OF ICE &amp; FIRE, FIRE &amp; BLOOD\u00a0<\/em>was not a novel, but rather an imaginary history. \u00a0 Though it is still in print, it was first published in 2018, and is not eligible for a Hugo. \u00a0 However, in November 2022, my publishers on both sides of the Atlantic released <em>RISE OF THE DRAGON.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7583\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MART_Rise-of-the-Dragon_CVR_FRONT_FINAL-775x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"775\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MART_Rise-of-the-Dragon_CVR_FRONT_FINAL-775x1024.jpg 775w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MART_Rise-of-the-Dragon_CVR_FRONT_FINAL-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MART_Rise-of-the-Dragon_CVR_FRONT_FINAL-768x1015.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MART_Rise-of-the-Dragon_CVR_FRONT_FINAL.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>RISE<\/em>, if anything, is even harder to categorize than <em>FIRE &amp; BLOOD<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Definitely not a novel, it covers the same period and the same events as Archmaester Glydayn&#8217;s history, but in far less detail.\u00a0 Elio M. Garcia Jr. and Linda Antonsson of the Westeros website did the abridgement.\u00a0\u00a0 The text is only a small part of the book, however.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>RISE OF THE DRAGON<\/em> is a lavishly illustrated coffee-table sized volume featuring 150 original paintings by fantasy artists from all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0 Myself, I think it is gorgeous, but then, I am hardly objective.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7580\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/240139-FCX-769x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"769\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/240139-FCX-769x1024.jpg 769w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/240139-FCX-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/240139-FCX-768x1022.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/240139-FCX-1154x1536.jpg 1154w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/240139-FCX.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Hugo Awards have no category for art books, and <em>RISE<\/em> does not fit in novel&#8230; so if you would like to nominate it, the appropriate category would be <em>RELATED WORK<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s a bit of a grab bag category that in the past has included not only art books, but critical studies, biographies, speeches, memoirs, and&#8230; ah&#8230; other, stranger stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line, though, you should nominate\u00a0 what you love best.\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s what gives the Hugo its meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations close <strong><em>APRIL 30.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And remember, only worldcon members can cast a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket rules.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s World Science Fiction Convention (the 81st) is happening in Chengdu, China, from October 18-22.
