{"id":8049,"date":"2023-02-07T09:15:56","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T16:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=8049"},"modified":"2023-02-07T14:54:28","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T21:54:28","slug":"lost-and-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2023\/02\/07\/lost-and-found\/","title":{"rendered":"Lost and Found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;You can buy anything you might desire from Gray Alys.\u00a0\u00a0 But it is better not to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those were the opening words of my short story &#8220;In the Lost Lands,&#8221; first published in the DAW anthology <em>AMAZONS II<\/em>\u00a0 in 1982.\u00a0\u00a0 In the first decade or so of my career most of what I wrote was science fiction, set amidst the Thousand Worlds, the shared background of dozens of my stories and my first novel, DYING OF THE LIGHT.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;In the Lost Lands&#8221; was a bit of a departure; a pure fantasy.\u00a0 (I loved fantasy just as much as SF, but back in the 70s and 80s there was not much of a market for fantasy shorts).\u00a0\u00a0 It was meant to be the first in a series of stories about Gray Alys, a mysterious sorceress in a distant, magical realm, who provides her patrons with whatever they might wish&#8230; if they are foolish enough, to buy from her.\u00a0\u00a0 You deal with Gray Alys at your peril.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8051\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alys-300x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alys-300x280.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alys-768x716.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alys.jpg 926w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wanted to write six or eight or ten Gray Alys stories, then put them all together in a collection&#8230; or perhaps a &#8220;fix up&#8221; novel.\u00a0\u00a0 That was a common approach back in those days.\u00a0\u00a0 And one I used myself with another character, Haviland Tuf.\u00a0 I wrote a series of Tuf stories, then an interstitial to bridge them all together, and published them as TUF VOYAGING.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, for whatever reason, I never wrote that second Gray Alys story.\u00a0 (I did begin one, long ago.\u00a0\u00a0 Got two pages, I think, then set it aside, and never returned to it).\u00a0\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Damned if I know.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a long time ago.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I always liked the character, though.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why it thrills me to announce that she will soon be appearing on the big screen.\u00a0\u00a0 IN THE LOST LANDS, the movie, wrapped filming in Poland a few weeks ago!\u00a0\u00a0 Paul W.S.
