{"id":7166,"date":"2021-09-02T09:52:19","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T15:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=7166"},"modified":"2021-08-27T09:53:05","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T15:53:05","slug":"lets-go-mets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2021\/09\/02\/lets-go-mets\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Go Mets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The year was 1986.<\/p>\n<p>Was that a lifetime ago, or last week?\u00a0 Sometimes I am not sure.<\/p>\n<p>For me, it was a pretty good year.\u00a0\u00a0 I had my first job in television, writing for the CBS revival of THE TWILIGHT ZONE.\u00a0\u00a0 I had gone through a very rough time financially the preceding couple of years, but now things were turning around.\u00a0\u00a0 In the NFL, the Giants were looking damn good and winning a lot of games.\u00a0\u00a0 And in baseball&#8230; in baseball, we had the Mets.\u00a0\u00a0 After teasing us in 1984 and 1985, the Mets caught fire early in 1986, took charge of the National League from pillar to post, and made it to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox.<\/p>\n<p>In a couple of weeks, ESPN will be bringing back those halcyon days with a four-part two-night documentary about that amazing season.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Once Upon a Time in Queens: The Wild Ride of the \u201986 Mets | ESPN 30 for 30\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dD5wkpJ7Kbg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It should be a cool couple of nights.\u00a0\u00a0 And you know the best part?\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em> I&#8217;m in the show.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Can&#8217;t say how much or how often, but they came up to my cabin a few months back and interviewed me for an hour or so (and never asked once about THE WINDS OF WINTER or the new GAME OF THRONES successor shows I am developing for HBO).\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe a couple of minutes of that will make it into the film, but hey, that&#8217;s cool&#8230; they have a lot of other exciting interviews in there as well.<\/p>\n<p>But why should they interview a fantasy writer at all about the 1986 World Series???<\/p>\n<p>Well, because&#8230; Parris and I were at Game Six.<\/p>\n<p>And THAT experience I will remember till my dying day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7168\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/CROWD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"942\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/CROWD.jpg 942w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/CROWD-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/CROWD-768x522.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 942px) 100vw, 942px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Happy Mets fans at the end of game 6.\u00a0 Find me and Parris (not the best pic of either of us, but we are there).<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere around here I have my Mets cap and a baseball signed by Lenny Dykstra.\u00a0 Need to find those before showtime&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year was 1986.
