{"id":6502,"date":"2020-09-12T14:07:28","date_gmt":"2020-09-12T20:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=6502"},"modified":"2020-09-12T14:07:28","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T20:07:28","slug":"more-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2020\/09\/12\/more-death\/","title":{"rendered":"More Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am late to post about this, but I was very saddened by the news of a couple recent deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The world of television and film lost a titan with the passing of Dame Diana Rigg.\u00a0\u00a0 Such an amazing talent.\u00a0\u00a0 It was such an honor to have her on GAME OF THRONES as the Queen of Thorns.\u00a0 I only had the chance to meet her once, when I visited the set the first year she was on the show.\u00a0\u00a0 As brief as that meeting was, I count that a rare privilege.\u00a0 A lovely lady. \u00a0 As great as she was as Olenna Tyrell, for me&#8230; and for most every other member of my generation&#8230; she will always remain Emma Peel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6504\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/olenna-tyrell-diana-rigg-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/olenna-tyrell-diana-rigg-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/olenna-tyrell-diana-rigg-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/olenna-tyrell-diana-rigg-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/olenna-tyrell-diana-rigg.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was also moved by the death of Tom Seaver &#8212; Tom Terrific, the Franchise, the Hall of Fame pitcher for the Amazin&#8217; Mets who led them to their World Series Championship in 1969.\u00a0\u00a0 I never met Seaver at all, but of course I was a fan.\u00a0\u00a0 I do not follow Major League Baseball as much as I did when I was younger, but as a kid in Jersey I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, and had my heart ripped out when Da Bums moved to LA.\u00a0\u00a0 So of course I became a Mets fan when they began play in 1962 as an expansion team.\u00a0\u00a0 I suffered through all the years of losing &#8212; as lovable as they were, they were still losers &#8212; and the turnaround led by Seaver and Koosman and the rest of the Amazin&#8217;s in &#8217;69 was nothing short of miraculous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6505\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tom.jpg 310w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tom-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is odd, when you think of it, how caught up a sports fan can get in the fortunes of their team&#8230; but the emotions are real.\u00a0\u00a0 That World Series victory made me so very very happy, that even now half a century later I still smile when I recall it.<\/p>\n<p>And in these dark days, we need every smile.<\/p>\n<p>Goodbye, Tom.\u00a0 Goodbye, Diana.\u00a0 Rest in peace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am late to post about this, but I was very saddened by the news of a couple recent deaths.
