{"id":5886,"date":"2019-11-18T09:42:06","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T16:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=5886"},"modified":"2019-11-16T18:42:31","modified_gmt":"2019-11-17T01:42:31","slug":"bring-me-my-pipe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2019\/11\/18\/bring-me-my-pipe\/","title":{"rendered":"Bring Me My Pipe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I try to get to New York City once or twice a year.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of my favorite cities in the world, and my visits there are always half business, half pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>On the business side, I check in with all my publishers (I have several), my agents (I have several), with my editors (past and present), with my friends and colleagues at HBO (past and present).\u00a0\u00a0 I often do a signing, an interview, or some other sort of public event.\u00a0 On this most recent visit, Raya Golden and I did a signing down at Midtown Comics for her wonderful graphic novel of my unproduced pilot, STARPORT.\u00a0\u00a0 We scribbled in hundreds of books, and afterwards sat down for a short interview.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"George R.R. Martin &amp; Raya Golden Reveal Alien Races and Secrets\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dAH13deq7aE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Autographed copies of STARPORT may still be available from Midtown Comics in Manhattan.\u00a0 Or not.\u00a0 We signed a lot of stock, but I am not sure how long they will last.\u00a0\u00a0 In any case, copies are certainly available from Santa Fe: <a href=\"https:\/\/jeancocteaucinema.com\/product\/starport-graphic-novel-pre-orders\/\">https:\/\/jeancocteaucinema.com\/product\/starport-graphic-novel-pre-orders\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the pleasure side&#8230; well, we often try to get to a Broadway show or two, but I was too busy this year.\u00a0 I did find time to get together with my friends Ellen Datlow and Mr &amp; Mrs X for a pizza crawl through the wilds of Jersey in search of bar pies.\u00a0\u00a0 This year we managed to hit the Landmark Tavern in Livingstone and the Star Tavern in Orange, both of which were amazing.<\/p>\n<p>((And if you don&#8217;t know what a bar pie is, you don&#8217;t know pizza)).<\/p>\n<p>I also combined business and pleasure with a dinner at the historic Keens Steakhouse with Kay McCauley, queen of agents, and my friends from Tor, publisher Tom Doherty and our Wild Cards editor, Diana Pho.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keens.com\/\">http:\/\/www.keens.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Keens has been a Manhattan mainstay since 1885, famous for their fabulous steaks and mutton chops&#8230; and for the hundreds of clay pipes that adorn their ceilings and walls.\u00a0\u00a0 In ye older times, no meal was considered complete without a bowl at its conclusion, and the regulars at Keens traditionally left their long, fragile &#8220;churchwarden&#8221; pipes at the restaurant, to be called for at need.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5897\" src=\"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5333-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5333-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5333-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5333-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5333-166x124.jpg 166w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5333.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Keens still displays the pipes belonging to Teddy Roosevelt,<span class=\"style8\"> Babe Ruth, Will Rogers,, Albert Einstein, George M. Cohan, J.P.
