{"id":5511,"date":"2019-06-02T08:04:35","date_gmt":"2019-06-02T14:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=5511"},"modified":"2019-05-24T17:08:48","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T23:08:48","slug":"all-hail-our-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2019\/06\/02\/all-hail-our-artists\/","title":{"rendered":"All Hail Our Artists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a lucky guy in a lot of ways&#8230; one of them being that I get to work with some of the greatest SF and fantasy artists in the world.<\/p>\n<p>ASFA has just announced this year&#8217;s finalists for the Chesley Awards, and I&#8217;m thrilled to note that <em>Wild Cards<\/em> and <em>A Song of Ice and Fire<\/em> both have artists among this year&#8217;s finalists.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Komarck has been doing spectacular Wild Cards covers for Tor for years now, with way too little recognition, so it&#8217;s great to see that his cover for LOW CHICAGO is a finalist for Best Cover Illustration, Hardcover.\u00a0\u00a0 Marko Kloos&#8217;s Khan is the featured character.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4715\" src=\"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/LOW-CHICAGO-final-BIG-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The redoubtable John Picacio has no fewer than three nominations on this year&#8217;s Chesley ballot&#8230; all great, but of course my favorite is the illustration he did for &#8220;EverNight,&#8221; a Wild Cards story by Victor Milan on Tor.com.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s been nominated for Best Interior Illustration.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5238\" src=\"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/unnamed-1-751x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"751\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/unnamed-1-751x1024.jpg 751w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/unnamed-1-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/unnamed-1-768x1047.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>John tells me he was especially pleased by this nomination.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;I want to celebrate Vic, and I want people to remember him and his story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I speak for the whole Wild Cards Consortium when I say how lucky we are to have amazing talents like John Picacio and Michael Komarck bringing our characters to life.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, that other series of mine is also well represented on the Chesley ballot, with a nomination for John Jude Palencar&#8217;s 2019 <em>Ice &amp; Fire <\/em>calendar as Best Product Illustration.\u00a0\u00a0 You can see the cover here, but there&#8217;s a lot more stunning Ice &amp; Fire art inside.\u00a0 JJP is one of the premiere artists in the field, and a joy to work with.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4584\" src=\"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/494992_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/494992_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/494992_600-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/494992_600-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The entire list of this year&#8217;s Chesley nominees can he found here:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/17afhGHSQ1c22ogC_LNr2wdx0qxD3SefO_90Sl94keqs\/edit#<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all the nominees.\u00a0\u00a0 I love fantasy art, and it&#8217;s nice to see some great work being recognized.<\/p>\n<p>(Signed copies of LOW CHICAGO and the 2019 Palencar calendar are both available from the bookstore at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.\u00a0 Vic Milan&#8217;s &#8220;EverNight&#8221; can be found and read on Tor.com, along with lots of other great Wild Cards stories).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a lucky guy in a lot of ways&#8230; one of them being that I get to work with some of the greatest SF and fantasy artists in the world.
