{"id":2982,"date":"2010-07-15T00:13:21","date_gmt":"2010-07-15T00:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/?p=2982"},"modified":"2017-09-21T18:15:43","modified_gmt":"2017-09-21T18:15:43","slug":"the-white-knight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2010\/07\/15\/the-white-knight\/","title":{"rendered":"The White Knight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ranks are filling out on HBO&#8217;s GAME OF THRONES.<\/p>\n<p>Ser Barristan Selmy, Barristan the Bold, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, will be played by Ulsterman IAN MCELHINNEY, Belfast born and bred.<\/p>\n<p>Ser Barristan is a veteran of tournament and battle, and McElhinney a veteran of stage and screen who has been acting professionally since 1981.  He was a pope on THE TUDORS, a captain on HORATIO HORNBLOWER, a priest, a doctor, a detective&#8230; though I believe this is his first turn as a knight.  He&#8217;s no stranger to the Paint Hall, though; the huge shipyard soundstage where we&#8217;ll be doing much of our filming was also the place where they built the CITY OF EMBER, in which he had a role.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pics.livejournal.com\/grrm\/pic\/000b4ffc\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/import\/s320x240248\" width=\"191\" height=\"240\" border='0'\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McElhinney is another terrific addition to our cast.  He&#8217;s a splendid actor, and his readings captured all of Ser Barristan&#8217;s dignity and nobility.
