A Taste of This, A Taste of That

Some of you may not realize that, in addition to my Not A Blog, I also have an actual homepage / website. You can find it here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/ Check it out, if you have not visited before. There’s lots and lots of content there, all sorts of things to explore.

I must confess, though, I don’t update it as often as I should. What can I say? I’m busy.

But today we uploaded a couple of new items that some of you may be interested in: new samples from two forthcoming books.

For all the Wild Cards fans out there, we’ve got a taste of HIGH STAKES, due out this August. HIGH STAKES is the twenty-third volume in the overall series, and the third and concluding part of the ‘Fort Freak’ triad. The sample is from the pen of the talented Ian Tregillis, and features Mollie Steunenberg, aka Tesseract. You’ll find it at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/wild-cards-excerpt/

((Readers with weak stomachs be warned, HIGH STAKES is our Lovecraftian horror book, and things do get graphic and bloody and… well… horrible. Althought not so much in the sample)).

And… because I know how much bitching I’d get if I offered a new sample from Wild Cards without also doing one from A SONG OF ICE & FIRE… we’ve also changed the WINDS OF WINTER sample on my wesbite, replacing the Alayne chapter that’s been there for the past year with one featuring Arianne Martell. (Some of you may have heard me read this one at cons).

Have a read at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/

You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in WINDS OF WINTER? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait.

And no, just to spike any bullshit rumors, changing the sample chapter does NOT mean I am done. See the icon up above? Monkey is still on my back… but he’s growing, he is, and one day…

Live to Fight Another Day

Many thanks to all you loyal friends of House Lannister and the Maid of Tarth. Thanks to you, Jaime and Brienne defeated Sabriel and the pussycat and lived to fight another day.

But fight they must! This time they are up against two characters I do not know, from a book I have not gotten to yet… but the novel’s gotten good reviews, and the characters appear formidable, so we may need your help again.

LATER: Uh-oh. Danger. Looks like Jaime and Brienne are in trouble this round.

All Men Must Color (Inside the Lines, Please)

October is here, and it’s going to be a busy month for me and my publishers.

The new Wild Cards reissue, DOWN & DIRTY, comes out on October 27, as detailed below. But as it happens, that’s not the only book I have coming out that day.

October 27 is also the day Bantam will be releasing the new Ice & Fire Coloring Book.

Yes, I said “coloring book.” Not just for the kiddies either. No, it seems that of late adult coloring books have become quite the thing, so Bantam wanted us to do one too. And since I love seeing good fantasy art, I was of course thrilled by the idea.

Here’s a look at the cover:

You can preorder this one from your favorite local bookstore or online retailer, or from Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Official-Game-Thrones-Coloring-Book/dp/1101965762/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1443722280&sr=1-2

Anne Groell tells me there are also plans for a COLORING CONTEST down the line, with some cool prizes for the winners. No details yet, but I’ll post them here when I’ve got them.

I have seen the (uncolored) art for this one, and it looks spectacular. Probably will look even better once colored. So stock up on your colored pencils, boys and girls (or your crayons, if you dare), you’re going to need them.

Direwolves On Staten Island

The boys of summer better take heed — winter is coming to Staten Island on August 8. And where there is winter, there are direwolves.

So I’m headed east the first week of August… for a wedding, yes, and no, that’s private, so you don’t get to hear any more about it… but I am going to see my editors and publishers and agents while I am in town, and do some other fun stuff… including a ball game.

That’s the night the Staten Island Direwolves will be playing the Lannister Lions.

Normally the home team is the Staten Island Yankees… but for one night only, they are changing their name to the Staten Island Direwolves, and will be wearing special jerseys. The visitors, normally the Hudson Valley Renegades, will be clad in gold and red jerseys emblazoned with the Lion of Lannister. So it will be Winterfell v. Casterly Rock once more.

The first 2500 attendees that night will get free baseball caps with the Direwolf logo (above). Also, we will be having a special fund-raising lottery on behalf of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, and the winners will take home the actual Stark and Lannister game jerseys worn by the players.

I will be signing books for 400 lucky fans as well — only 400, the line will be capped, so get there EARLY if you want a book signed — and the good folks from Wild Spirit will also be on hand, with one of their wolves.

For more details, check out the team website at http://www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t586

If you’re a baseball fan… or a Stark supporter… do drop by, and root, root, root for the home team. If the Direwolves lose, I may have to kill another Stark.

The Calendar Is Coming

I won’t be at this year’s San Diego Comicon, alas. Had to miss the fun, but there’s too much work to do, and I know that HBO and Random House and Tor have matters well in hand, with lots of great events and promotions.

Which is not to say I won’t be represented: the 2016 edition of the Official SONG OF ICE AND FIRE Calendar will be making its debut at San Diego. I was lucky enough to snag an advance copy.

This year the artwork is by the amazing and talented French artist, MAGALI VILLENUEVE, whose past work includes some terrific contributions to Fantasy Flight’s games and the WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE concordance. Check out more of her work at http://magali-villeneuve.blogspot.com/ and http://www.magali-villeneuve.com/

The calendars will be available at the Random House/ Bantam/ Del Rey booth at San Diego, so be sure and look them before the supply is gone. Magali has done some gorgeous work here; I expect you will love it as much as I do.

We’re Number One… Again

All great, of course, but I have to confess, that return to #1 especially tickles.

Pretty damn good for a book first published in 1996.

(It is the return to the show to the airwaves that’s responsible, of course, so thanks to HBO and David and Dan and Bryan and our amazing cast and directors… and also to Anne, and all the great folks at Bantam Spectra, who have kept all of the books in print and available for lo these long years. Long may we reign).

Report from Santa Fe

Last month I did a local television interview with Lorene Mills, of REPORT FROM SANTA FE.

For those of you who cannot get enough of me talking, here's the link:

http://reportfromsantafe.com/episodes/view/211/george-r-r-martin-author-game-of-thrones/

Lorene has had a very eclectic guest list over the years.  A lot of New Mexico politicians, to be sure, but also artists, writers, and even stranger types.

She's a big Peter S. Beagle fan as well, and interviewed him when he was here a few weeks back with THE LAST UNICORN.

Speaking of which:

Winter Is Coming… to Seattle

Fans of Ice & Fire… and of great fantasy art in general… have a treat coming next winter.

Seattle's famous LTD Art Gallery, a premiere fine art gallery that specializes in the works inspired for the many icons of contemporary pop culture, will be hosting WINTER IS COMING, a showcase of original artwork inspired by A SONG OF ICE & FIRE.  James Monosmith, owner and director of the gallery, declares that the show will be "an unparalleled collection" by "today's top fantasy and pop artists."

The show will be open on March 1, 2014, and run through March 23rd, at the Ltd Art Gallery, 307 E. Pike Street, in Seattle.  There will be an opening reception at the gallery on Saturday, March, 1, and a final special engagement at Emerald City Comicon, March 28 – 30th.

It's no secret that I love fantasy art, so I'm very excited about this show.  I've had the honor and privilege of working with incredible artists like Michael Komarck, John Picacio, Gary Gianni, Marc Simonetti, Charles Vess, Jeff Jones, John Howe, Marc Fishman, Donato Giancola, Stephen Youll, Tom Kidd, and many many more in the past, and it's my hope that some of them will be sending brand new original pieces for inclusion in the show… along with many new artists, some of whom may very well win places in my personal pantheon.  I look forward to seeing all sorts of wild, new, exciting visions of my world and characters.

You can check out the gallery website at http://www.ltdartgallery.com/

Artists who would like to submit their work for consideration for inclusion in the show should contact James Monosmith at the gallery email.

(At this date, I can't promise that I will be able to attend the gallery opening.  But if I can, I will).

Podcast Honored

A somewhat belated congratulations to Kyle, Mimi, Ashley, Amin, and the many other co-hosts, guests, and visitors at A Podcast of Ice and Fire, who just won the "Geekie Award" for Best Podcast.

<lj-embed id=”365″ />

I've never actually met the folks from the Podcast of Ice & Fire… well, most of them, anyway, I may have run into one or two on book tours… but I have listened to them from time to time, and they seem to have a lot of fun.  They are not always right, but they are [almost] always interesting, and worth the listen.  So give them a try, if you're a fan of podcasts.  You can find them at http://podcastoficeandfire.com/ talking about the show, the books, and… for reasons I am not entirely clear on… House Manwoody.

Congrats on the honor, guys.  Take a bow.
